The way this is coming down is going me a very bad feeling.. If it were going to be accepted they could just say so. If it is being rejected they need to cross their T's and dot their I's

If we lose Kovalchuk, are we really that much worse off than when we were? Yes no Oduya, no Bergfors, but we have a whole host of young guys coming up. We brought in Tallinder and Volchenkov, we would still have about 3.5 million to finish out our roster...

Don't think it would be terrible.

I just don't like how it has all gone down.

either way it goes, they have to deliberate. they may end up accepting it because they don't think they can beat it in arbitration. they've only had one real day of deliberation - if they took until wednesday, wouldn't that be another day of t-crossing?

Lou seems fairly confident that the Devils have met all the demands laid down by the NHL, so I will just take his word for it.

I kind of just see this as further posturing from the NHL to indicate to teams that if you submit a contract such as this the process will not be easy and the process will take a long time to resolve. Dragging it out just makes it look like they are thoroughly investigating every aspect of the contract. Not that I think after this mess that many teams will be trying to submit deals of a similar nature.

At some point after this Lou has to work on getting Parise signed long term, because it never seems to end to well when the Devils let things go to arbitration :giggle: so expect another 600 page thread in the near future.

I think regardless of the decision both sides have to posture and show that there was a lot of thought put into the second contract's submission. So I do not think the timing reflects anything on the ultimate decision, but I'm an optimist

Correct. Daly and his internal staff is going through every inch of the document with Shep Goldfein of Skadden and Bob Batterman of Proskauer (and their underlings presumably). They are also determining if the contract will be upheld by the arbitrator - much more difficult in this instance. They are very likely speaking with outside arbitration experts to gauge thier views on the potential arbitration outcome. This review takes time and is not a 48 hour job. The league knew this might be possible (a contract that tested the limits) when the CBA was written, hence the 5 day window.

This is one reason why the NHLPA is at a disadvantage - their leadership void means they don't have the network of experts to opine internally on the document as the NHL does.

I'll be very interested to see how the cap space gets cleared if this Kovy contract gets accepted.

Having a world class player like this for the rest of his career will be great and will help the team and I want him here for all intensive purposes... BUT... we've already given up Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier, and a 1st for him.... Now what? If we have to give up Rolston and Salvador... Zubrus... or White... then what does the list look like?

Bergfors, Oduya, Cormier, one or two of Rolston, Zubrus, Salvador, White, and a 1st... for Kovalchuk? If it's Rolston and White I can get over it... But Zubrus and Salvador are good players on this team...

Idk there are many good and bad sides to this.

4-3-2-2-4

More palatable-looking. Someone pointed out the last night that Mikko Koivu has a contract with fluctuating salary because of a signing bonus. Perhaps this is at work here?

Very true. I'm a big fan of both Zubrus and Salvador as well, but keep in mind that those guys will retire in the next few years and Kovy will be around for at least a decade barring injuries or a trade demand or something.

the only thing of true value we gave up in that deal was bergfors. oduya was not worth 3.5 million last season; i think tallinder is a better player. cormier is blocked by josefson and henrique - the devils would've had to keep josefson in sweden another year, and eventually one of them would have to go, or move to wing. the 1st - well, we traded that for a high 2nd, and lost a 2nd round pick.

salvador is a negative value player imo, and zubrus is about neutral value. we'll see about kovalchuk - there's going to have to be some changes to his game. but the guy has been in the top 10 in the NHL in goals 7 straight years. he's probably the worst player to ever do this, but everyone else who's done it are lock hall-of-famers.

njdevsfn95: kypreos did not mean 15M. also, i hope it isn't a bonus, that makes it much easier for the league to construct a scenario where kovalchuk collects a check in year 15 and then bounces.

While I've always been in favor of signing Kovalchuk if possible and I know that you have to give value to get value in a trade especially if you're painted into a corner the way this contract will do to us, I really have to hold my nose and wince at the idea of trading Zubrus or Salvador. I agree with NJD26 in that those guys are valued contributors to this team. I would not be sad to see Langenbrunner or Colin White go. Brian Rolston is a given. I think just about everyone wants him gone.

if 2005 and 2006 are any guide, and assuming this goes through, don't expect them before training camp.

The Devils have until October to get under the cap. They can be 10% over until then.

Devils have until September 17th to get under the cap. The start of training camp.

This is the part the makes the saga interesting. Not so much *if* kovalchuk's deal will be approved (i think it's a fair assumption to call it a lock), but what players are moved in order to accommodate for it.

Like we've all said, Zubrus/Salvador are the most movable based on salary and overall worth. Two pretty solid mid level guys who can definitely help a team out. I'd really hate to lose Zubrus' energy and work ethic, but he may be a likely victim in this.

Everyone's wet dream is to move Rolston, but given his contract, ntc, age, small worth, etc... unlikely unless NJ gives up something significant with him, such as a good prospect or 1st round pick. And then you have to think "is it worth it to give that much up just to save Zubrus", and the answer is likely no. If Lou can pull a magic rabbit out of his ass and somehow move Rolston, then we'll have a lot to celebrate. But don't count on it.
