I used to absolutely despise him, but I have recently grown to understand his positions on things more and more. That said, I still don't agree with many things that he has done, and now only mildly dislike him.

I think it depends on the venue. In Philadelphia, for example, Bettman gets booed because he is better looking than everyone in the city ... women included.

He's the puppet/spokesperson for the owners.... he does sound a bit like a scummy lawyer at times and he has an NBA background (boo'able offense there alone), but for the most he's done a decent enough job... boo'ing him for shootouts is acceptable though!

Pay homage to the INCREDIBLE scoring goalie!!!! :-)

I saw CRASHER trip a kid on skates and then he stole the kids lunch money and slapped his mom when she came to pick him up.. All because the kid looked at his crease

CRASHER's official list of high stick victims from this forum:
gionta182, devilsfan26 .... WHO'S NEXT??

2005 Fantasy Football League Champion... Bow to my Football knowledge !!!!!!

2008 NJDevs Stanley Cup Winner for best overall poster... where's my damn ring?

Its become "cool" to boo any commissioner because he's the symbol for all grievences (real or imagined) against the league. Its the same whenever they announce political figures at a sports event as well. The politician could have won 75% of the vote there but they'll still get boo'd just because of who they are. I also believe there's a cultural divide between Bettman (high whiney voiced Jewish New York lawyer) and the cornfed Canadian/Great Lakes/New England/Upstate NY good ole boy Don Cherry hockey types that despise that Bettman "Isn't a hockey guy growing up on the ponds but an NBA guy" (I find this ironic since Bettman worked for the Islanders prior to joining the NBA's front office).

Everytime Bettman tries to put the focus back on the ice both the hockey and general media keep dragging him into questions regarding the business. Meanwhile the "King" of commissioners David Stern has presided over a league where 3 teams have won 60% the league's championships, had the worst sports gambling scandal in modern sports history including charges of fixing games, and currently had to use league funds to bail out 12 franchises to cover their payroll in a single season. But since Stern is paid-up with the right press people in NYC and Bristol this all gets swept under the rug or conveniently forgotten quickly.

Over time I've to have grown to understand and agree with many of Bettman's positions on many issues regarding the league and that a lot of criticism of him is underlied with what I've written above.

Yeah Bettman had a chance to launch the NHL into the stratosphere in 1994 when MLB wusses were on strike. The NHL could of grabbed the limelight.

Bettman makes almost 4 times as much as the Deputy Commissioner, Bill Daily. Gary's a self serving hack.

Good thing there's no cap for the league staff roster. The NHL would never be able to get rid of Bettman.

Yeah the proverbial... "Do as I say... Not as I Do!"

FUNNY "TOP 10 Reasons to Fire Bettman"

10. He wants hockey played where no ice has ever been found.
9. He’s changed uniforms so they look bad on fans.
8. He signed a TV contract with the worst network(s).
7. He’s screwed up the rules so much that new and old fans alike are
bored with the game.
6. He watered down the league with the salary cap.
5. He moved the All-Star game to Wednesday so nobody would watch it.
4. He destroyed decades old rivalries.
3. He stopped the sport for a whole year.
2. He took fighting out of hockey.
AND the number one reason why he should be fired:

1. He came from the NBA

http://www.firebettm...happy-holidays/

Every hockey fan up north liked hockey a lot,
But Gary Bettman, who liked basketball, did not.
Bettman hated hockey, all its traditions
No one knows why he took such positions
He sat in his office, his teeth slowly grating,
“I must find some way to keep players from skating!”
And then Bettman got an idea in his head
A way to make hockey fans shiver with dread
“I’ll become the commissioner” said the old sh!thead
“And make people want to watch basketball instead.”
So he took half the season, in his second year
Which made all the hockey fans shed many tears
He took their divisions, their Smythe, and their Norris,
He ignored their complaints “The Devils, they bore us!”
He expanded the league into odd southern cities
Atlanta and Raleigh, where the ice was quite sh!tty
And he put glowing pucks on the fans TV sets
And then Gary Bettman took the Winnipeg’s Jets
Then he took a whole season, 04 and 05
And so the TV ratings took quite a dive.
“And now for my next trick,” said the big douche
“I’ll design hockey jerseys that will make the fans puke!”
And the fans cried in anguish at the new Reebok sweaters
“A retarded two year old could have done better!”
So Bettman sat in New York, feeling quite pleased
“I’m bringing the hockey fans down to their knees!”
And he heard a small sound as he was watching the Knicks
The sound of a hockey puck hitting a stick.
He ran to his window and looked down below
And he saw the ice surface plowed in the snow
The hockey fans everywhere still came to play,
Ignoring the NHL’s ridiculous ways.
They played on their ponds, on their frozen back yards
They wore vintage sweaters, of original six stars
And Bettman was pissed, as he saw they still played
Even after the debacle he’d made
“They play without Reebok, they play without glow pucks,
They play without Thrashers, Panthers or Ducks!”
And Bettman then had a brief moment of doubt
Maybe hockey, perhaps, doesn’t belong down south.
And what happened then, some old-timers say,
Bettman’s small brain exploded that day.
And the hockey fans cheered for they knew they were saved
And they all started cheering, “Hip hip! Hooray!”
And Leafs fans and Habs fans, the Rangers and Bruins
Started building the league back up from its ruins.
Merry Christmas to hockey, and all of its fans
And may the story I just told (please) be in God’s plans
For we hockey fans are Patient, Loyal and True
But please God, take Bettman! What more can we do?!?

i was indifferent to him until i saw an interview he did with CBC when the in-between periods guy who's with Don Cherry who's name is escaping me right now, asked him about direct quotes betteman has said in the recent past, then gary got all pissy and started to claim he never said that, its out of context and all that garbage.

dont ask me to recall what the discussion was about cause i was either a- drinking, b- got hit in the head between now and then playing hockey or c) got hit in the head at my lat job

but ever since then i've gone back to hating him

Owners love him because he got them a salary cap and a favorable CBA in general. Canadian fans hate him for trying to move so many Canadian teams looking for a gold mine in a heavily populated southern city. I'm not really sure why Americans hate him other then the lockouts. He was just doing his job.
