Ottawa Senators (22-34-9)
v.
New Jersey Devils (30-31-4)
The Story: When the Devils host the visiting Ottawa Senators at the Rock Tuesday night they will sit just 1 game shy of the magical .500 mark. It will be New Jersey’s first chance to reach the milestone this season. Thanks to a 20-2-2 mark in the second half the club has climbed within eight points of Buffalo for the final playoff spot in the East. Once 10-29-2, the Devils (30-31-4) sit one win away from what was once thought to be a pipe dream.
The scorching hot streak has seen them skyrocket from the NHL’s cellar to within reach of a their 14th consecutive playoff birth. But, with only 17 games remaining, there’s still little room for error.
The Devils get some favorable breaks on their upcoming schedule. Their next 5 games are against non-playoff teams including 2 games against Ottawa.
Ottawa enters the game dead last in the Eastern Conference with just 53 points. Losers of two of their last three including a 4-1 loss at home to the New York Rangers on Friday. The Senators hope to start their 4 game road trip with a win in New Jersey.
The two teams have split the season series at 1 game a piece. Back on Feb. 1 the Devils won by the familiar score of 2-1.
New Jersey goes for its fifth straight victory overall and seventh in a row at home on Tuesday night.
