A Phoenix Coyotes move to Winnipeg appears to be imminent after the team chartered a jet to their playoff matchup against the Detroit Red Wings last night, which apparently is enough evidence to report a sports franchise moving cities.

Citing a conversation they had with each other the night before, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean told the world yesterday that the fact that the Coyotes would take a jet airplane to Detroit rather than travel the 2,000 miles between the two cities by bus is a clear indication that purchase talks have fallen through and Phoenix’s hockey franchise is Canada-bound.

“That’s what we do here, we read between the lines,” MacLean said. “Nobody, and I mean nobody, uses a jet to travel anymore unless they are planning a multimillion dollar deal to revive the Winnipeg Jets franchise.”

The NHL immediately threw cold water on the claims.

“Are you kidding?  Even Winnipeg doesn’t want to be in Winnipeg,” said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. “That’d be like moving a hockey team to a southwestern city where hockey hasn’t been a part of the culture, ice doesn’t occur naturally and expecting it to thrive and prosper.”

Daly did say that talks are underway to move most of the residents of Winnipeg to Phoenix in an effort to bolster the hockey fanbase and get them out of the frozen hellscape they call home.

Not to be outdone, TSN is reporting that a deal to move the Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario is all but done after a broadcaster referred to Shane Doan as a bulldog – a name shared by Hamilton’s minor league hockey club.
