#1313201 WWE/TNA/ROH - Wrestling Thread

Didn't Sting join after the Wolfpack had mostly D level wrestlers?

#1313190 Lou's Future

Posted by MantaRay on 12 April 2015 - 09:15 AM

Lou is still the master builder. I blame a lot of this mess on Conte not being able to deliver on our top picks (aside from Parise and Larsson). You build winning teams from the goal out. He is doing the right things but just not getting the right young parts upfront. Next year is promising.

#1265409 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread

Posted by MantaRay on 23 May 2014 - 03:14 PM

You're either seriously not understanding this concept, or you're arguing for the sake of arguing.

I just don't think you understand the concept.

Thank God we have Point and Manta here to protect everyone from the insanity.

More so than you realize.

#1264807 Do you think we could get Joe Thorton?

Posted by MantaRay on 19 May 2014 - 09:10 AM

Would LOVE Thorton, fantastic player.   .

Not sure we could afford him and I doubt SJ trades him.  He is too valuable in turning mediocre players into gold for trades.

#1259449 In a Season of Problems, Brodeur was the Biggest

Posted by MantaRay on 08 April 2014 - 12:11 PM

This season rests on Lou's head.  For the Kovalchuk fiasco and for ignoring his best franchise player since he drafted Patrik Elias and letting him walk based on his ludicrous 1940s free agent negotiating style.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: for a man who fires people as if it were a bodily function, Lou should fire himself for the predicament he put this team in this year.

Ryder can drive him to the airport.

How do you blame Lou for Kovalchuk???

a.  Lou never wanted him, Vanderbeek pressured Lou to make that move.

b.  Kovalchuk "retired", Lou didn't force him to do it.

I think Lou did a great job of getting replacement for him.  Jagr, Clowe and Brunner were great signings (for the price), and on paper Ryder was a good signing.   I am more concerned about our drafting which hasn't done anything since Zach which I put on Conte.

#1252192 Marty's Quote at trade deadline

Posted by MantaRay on 12 March 2014 - 10:22 AM

Don't you get it PK...it's okay for Marty to be selfish because he's our guy, but god forbid some Russian import does it.  The double-standard with certain people is amazing, it really is.  If Kovy'd pulled half the crap Marty has this year (and gotten away with it) Manta and the Kovy-haters would have had a field day pontificating how the team concept was dead.

If this team is going all-in with Marty then they'd better have something to show for it and I'm not just talking about making the playoffs and getting punted in five games.  Because this season IS going to have reprecussions down the road between putting Cory through Groundhog Day and systematically eliminating every under-25 player not named Merrill from the lineup.

If Kovy could demand things and get away with it he wouldn't have played RW half his tenure here since he clearly publicly hated it when MacLean did it and still went back to it without raising a fuss under Pete.

I have no idea why you are pulling Kovy into this conversation, he was model citizen on this team.   He seemed to embrace being a Devil while he was here and I appreciated that about him.

The only thing I said was that Marty had something to prove the final part of the season that would be to our benefit.

#1235863 Gelinas to be sent to AHL when Volchenkov returns.

I hope they bring him back up when Larsson gets healthy.

I can't see how Merrill is still here.

#1235057 Has Adam Larsson Really Improved as a Defenseman?

Posted by MantaRay on 30 December 2013 - 02:33 PM

Larsson is a keeper.  He is only 21.   I wish Larry Robinson were still here to develop him more (no offense to Scotty, but Larry was just a great teacher).

I think mentally, because he seems to be always paired with older players, he is too hesitant and defers to the vets, instead of playing instinctively.   When he is paired with younger players he tends to be himself.  He and Gelinas were solid and had a great chemistry.

D-Men take far more time to develop.  He could be a staple here for the next decade with the right coaching.

#1215843 The Pete Deboer Thread

Posted by MantaRay on 12 October 2013 - 07:25 AM

Silly thread.

This is essentially a team of underachievers, and free agent talent that still needs to develop long term chemistry.

The west coast trip is typically brutal physically, but is a good place to come together.

I am glad the Devils did this early in the season, because it will pay dividends down the road.

This is a better team than last year, by December we will have a laugh at this thread.

#1207580 Column on Elias to HOF

Posted by MantaRay on 21 August 2013 - 07:49 AM

Elias is a HOF, no doubt.   No one has sacrificed more individual statistics for the good of the franchise/team.   To excel in a defensive first system and thrive says a lot about his HOF character.  Regardless of the different cast of characters on his teams, he has been instrumental in helping to get four Devils variations to the SC Finals, winning twice.  He is a strong silent leader and teacher, our greatest leader post Stevens.    He is a HOF in my book.

#1204718 Jagr Signs 1 Year Deal With Devils

Posted by MantaRay on 22 July 2013 - 01:52 PM

They may not be able to sustain a high level of play over the course of a season but everyone will be damned to think a Jagr/Elias combo won't wreak havoc on some level.

I don't remember them playing very well during the world cup or the olympics in year's past.   On paper it sounds good, but hockey is not played on paper.    I am hoping that Patty can breath some life into him.

Manta's Log: Day 5

No signings or sightings.   Begs the old Smith's question:  "How soon is now?". or can we as a species truly define:  "imiminent"

The search for truth continues.

#1203332 Kovalchuk Retired Effective Immediately?

Bottomline: The organization is back to a situation where we actually can be more successful without him.
