We don't need them!!! Lou wrote down a list of several draft eligible players that he got reliable information on over the telegraph he has in his office. He's hoping to steal that McDavid kid in the 4th round. Sully Burkenseaver from just outside of Toronto says that kid is the bees knees.
All we need is Lou and conte and that important slip of paper. Hopefully he doesn't leave it at Panera again like he did in 1997. And 99. And 01. And 02. And 06.
I feel bad for Lemaire's poor, poor wife. I'm pretty sure he's mentioned a few times that she's wanted him to retire and be home. And every time they settle down, here comes his old buddy Lou for another wacky Jersey adventure!!!
A lot of good points in this thread. The way I look at it, no matter how good you are the bottom with eventually fall out. It has for the Devils and now it's time to take our lumps like every other team in the league has.
Any team with top talent had to lose first, and now it's our turn. It's the natural cycle of sports.
PDB: I think he has a job because it doesn't matter who the coach is right now. I think management can tell he doesn't have much to work with at the moment.
Lou : He's done the best he could trying to duct tape the team together, but if you can't build through free agency and sooner or later winning will catch up with you. I'm sure if he had his way, he'd have signed Parise and Kovy would be an LA King.
Cory : one of the top goalies in the league the last few seasons and still an absolute steal. Let him back up an actual good team before we sell him down the river. And good for Kinkaid, I love him, but let's just give it 20 games before we annoint him.
I don't mind the losing. I think any long term fan of the league and hockey in general knew the bad days were coming as they do for all teams. I may voice some frustration from time to time, because losing sucks, but looking at the big picture it's what is best this year.
I think we have to remember that a lot of fans have never dealt with real losing. Others will never be happy so it doesn't matter. I get the OP's need to vent, though. I think a lot of us have had similar thoughts
I get that you're a really big Lou defender. But ask yourself this.
How many GMs would let 3 30 goals scorers + some other assets walk for nothing within 2 years. Miss the playoffs 3 years out of 4. Handing very bad contracts that is hurting the team. Almost purposely build the slowest and oldest team in the league and have a very very uncertain future aligned based on our poor prospect pool and depth and aging core player. And still have a job after all that? Gms have been fired for a lot less. You can bring all his past accomplishments up but just like Brodeur and Mario Lemieux... that doesnt mean they should still be playing and still have it no matter what they did in the past, they'd be hurting their team now just like Lou is hurting the team now
I mean forget that this is me repeating the same damn thing over and over and forget that you'd give a kidney for Lou. And just read this black on white statement and take off your blinders.
You may not agree with me/us on some stuff but this is what it is. It's obviously not easy to be a GM but Lou was simply below average for the last few years and it's certainly not good enough for a team in our shape.
So much bull to sift through. One of those 30 goal scorers left because ownership wanted to commit to the other, who then RETIRED AT AGE 30!!! It's pathetic that you try to put that in Lou. The 3rd "30 goal scorer" will most likely never score 30 again. The only way to keep him was to sign him to one of those awful contracts that you constantly complain about. You know, the ones that are a necessity in the NHL right now.
Now, when you lose those players it takes YEARS to replace them. You have to fill the holes as best you can through free agency. When you are consistently drafting at about 21st every year, you don't get the impact players. So rebuilding a team then takes a lot of time. The Devils have put together a great young defensive group together, and only you in your infinite knowledge would complain that they should waive the magic wand and make great young forwards appear instead.
I wouldn't give a kidney for Lou. I don't love him like you love Zach. I'm not wearing blinders. I can just tell that when you have a long history of winning, there will eventually be a fallout and a rebuild process. A lot of us have the patience to let it happen. You don't. You want wins and continuous prosperity without the bad times. No team has that. It's not a Lou thing. Id defend any GM who is trying to rebuild from the goal out. I'm sure you'll get sick of the next GM pretty quickly as well.
Not one team in the NHL built themselves up without losing for a while first. Go ahead, look at any big team in the last 20 years and see how they were built. 90% probably had a lot of bad years first. Ask yourself why it should be any different for the Devils?
Why do you have a job when people on njdevs.com know how to be a GM?
It's so simple! Why, just sign really good players for below market value, pick a coach that can win cups with his eyes closed, and know what will happen before it does! Why didn't Lou think of that?!?
