I see your point but I can also easily amend it to fit my point by saying we have nothing to play for by winning. Though the odds are long if we are not at pick 1 or 2, the reward of winning the lotto is too great and certainly not enough to risk winning for nothing. (I will admit that kinda hurt me to type...we are a proud organization with a tradition of winning and not used to this type of dirty talk....but its McDavid/Eichel we are talking about here.)
thats how most feel i think, but we can't forget that they are NOT GUARANTEED talent for us. We could easily finish for the 5-10 spot, and if we win more, possibly later. We aren't catching any of the tankers. I'd rather win for now and wind up with a 10-20 talent that will most likely produce just as much as any of the 5-10 choices would.
I am certainly not the expert on prospects but to me, everything after the 'guaranteed' talent, is not worth tanking for. I am not saying that the fifth best player this year does not project to be waaayyyy better than the ninth, but I am saying that if you look at the ninth player picked vs. the fifth player picked over the last 20 years, there isn't much of a difference (actually it's pretty much equal with hits and misses), and certainly not enough to risk losing for nothing.
Ok, we get it, the team isn't good. Joke is lame now. Beating the dead horse. Seriously. The team may not be the best team we've had, but it's still our team and we're supposed to be fans who support them no matter what, not fairweather fans that sh!t on the team for having a few poor seasons after nearly two decades of excellence.
