Pierre LeBrun: "There is a conflicting provision in the CBA, which is decades old, the voluntary retirement provision, which says this: if he goes back to the last team he ever played with, that, perhaps, he doesn't need the other 29 teams to sign off on it, and that would be the New Jersey Devils."

8.4 says: "The Club on whose VRL a player's name has been registered may transfer his name back on its Reserve List at any time after the expiry of one year from the date of registration on the VRL by filing any currently valid contract"

8.5(a) states: A player whose name has been entered on the VRL by a Member Club at his request, or by direction of the Commissioner under Section 8.2 hereof, may not re-enter organized hockey, professional or amateur, as a player for a period of three years from the date of such entry without written consent of the Member Club making such entry.
