In Topic: Bernier, Harrold & Janssen on Waivers. Carter to Wild

04 October 2014 - 09:49 AM

Devs' lineup tonight from TG: Forwards: Cammalleri-Zajac-Jagr; Havlat-Elias-Zubrus; Clowe-Henrique-Ryder; Ruutu-Gionta-Tootoo.

Dress rehearsal?

Not playing for Devils tonight: Kinkaid, Helgeson, Zidlicky, Harrold, Gomez, Matteau, Brunner, Janssen, Josefson, Boucher, Carter, Bernier

That leaves 2 reserve spots open (2G+7D+14F=23) between those listed above.

- Janssen easily sent down

- Matteau & Boucher sent down (top 9 replacements if injuries occur)

- Bernier sent down (hasn't made a case for himself over the other guys

That leaves Gomez, Brunner, Josefson, and Carter. Assuming the players in the lineup tonight are safe for being on the roster I would say Carter does not get a contract (Tootoo). That leaves Brunner (injury) and Gomez/Josefson.

If there is one thing that stands out to me this preseason between Gomez and Josefson, and this is just what first comes to mind, it is 2 PPGs and slick passing from Gomez and penalties from Josefson. So at the end of the day, if Gomez is Player A and Josefson is Player B, who makes the team better? Player A? I'm not 100% sure.

On the defense, it interesting Severson is playing again but obviously Zidlicky is going to in the top 6.

- Helgeson and Severson sent down (unless miraculously Salvador is traded -- there is no point have them play #7 role)

Greene, Zidlicky, Salvador, Harrold, Larsson, Merrill, Gelinas as the final group there.

And between Kinkaid/Clemmer I couldn't say.

Boucher-Henrique-Ryder 1a.

Cammalleri-Zajac-Jagr 1b.

Clowe-Elias-Havlat 2a.

Ruutu-Gomez-Zubrus 2b.

Drop Bernier (AHL or cut ties), Brunner (trade), Gionta (AHL - utility player call up), Carter, Kaberle, Fedotenko (release), Severson (AHL), Helgeson (AHL), Clemmensen (AHL)

Time to drop the baggage that has been IMO weighing the team down the past 2 years and/or being beaten out of spot (Brunner is ineffective outside of top 6 really).

Not hard to see why Gomez's numbers are so awful the past four seasons.  He's done.  One of the oldest-looking 34-year-olds I've ever seen.  Scary how slow he looks at times.

Glad to see Kinkaid turn in a solid effort all-around...clearly the backup job is his to lose.  Regardless of what the Devils say publicly, I can't see Clemmer being Plan A, as far as the backup position goes.

Re:  the shootout, sure, losing yet another one blows, but Cammalleri didn't play, and Havlat hasn't had much success in them, and Henrique got some bad luck.  And like Tri says, when your goalie only stops one of three, it's going to be tough to win those most of the time anyway.

Gomez may be slower but it seemed he did a good job last night of possessing and distributing. I think he could be a different asset that at this point is more serviceable than Gionta.

Gedig isn't on the camp list so I guess he is gone after all - oh well.

He will in Albany. One of the few guys not attending main camp.
