#1272578 The 2014 World Cup- Brazil

Posted by thefiestygoat on 02 July 2014 - 10:59 PM

I've never been big on soccer but this World Cup has piqued my interest; I have followed the Red Bulls very casually throughout the years but I'd love to check out some of the European leagues -- EPL, Serie A, La Liga, etc. If I understand the scheduling right I believe their seasons start in August?

In terms of foreign leagues the English Premier League is the easiest to follow. It's from August to April and the bulk of the games are on Saturday and Sunday (a few Monday and midweek games mixed in) and they start anywhere from 7:30/8:30 AM and go until roughly 2:30 PM. NBC broadcasts the games on NBCSN and their main channel. For the games not on those they carry them on their app and overflow channels (for some providers). They also have a Match of the Day show which shows highlights from every game that day. It's excellent.

Fox Sports has the rights to the Bundesliga which they will start broadcasting in 2015-16. The USMNT has a fair amount of German-Americans that should still be playing in Germany in 2015 (Julian Green, John Brooks, Timothy Chandler, Fabian Johnson, Terrence Boyd).

Liga MX (Mexico) has a lot of broadcast on US television. I just started following it this past year but ESPN has a few games and those Spanish channels (Univision?) carry a lot of the games on the weekend. There seasons is split into 2, it's kind of weird but it runs on the European schedule.

#1266023 DeBoer would welcome having Schneider and Brodeur as Devils’ two goa

Posted by thefiestygoat on 29 May 2014 - 08:29 PM

Just my opinion but I get the vibe that DeBoer continually lies about Brodeur in the press and doesn't really believe what he says. He's somewhat powerless in the situation given how tight Lou/Brodeur are. I'm sure he felt some pressure last year to play Brodeur against his better judgement knowing Lou's track record of firing coaches. Gotta keep Lou and Brodeur happy, unfortunately.

Hopefully Lou just tells Brodeur it's over this summer. I'd feel horrible for Schneider (and our chances of retaining him) if Brodeur is back next year.

Posted by thefiestygoat on 07 April 2014 - 10:52 PM

I'm not frustrated with the loss since I gave up on the playoffs awhile ago and I can appreciate the effort they are showing despite the current injury situation but Ryder bothers me. 1 goal in his last 33 games, just 8 assists over that time. Completely unacceptable. This isn't him being his usual streaky self - just complete ineptitude. Under no circumstance do I want to see him in a Devils uniform next year.

These past 2 games are the first time I feel like I can actually say I'm proud of this team this season. Good on them.

Corey Sznajder has all of the scoring chances, zone entries, and zone exits tracked for this game here. Always interesting to check out.

#1256785 Brodeur Article, name dropping where he might want to play, reveals wh

Posted by thefiestygoat on 29 March 2014 - 12:10 AM

You can believe what you want but these people exist and their number is greater than you think it is. I have friends who I would say go to a few games a year and and the great majority of them are all in the "We need to keep Marty at all costs and Cory can wait" boat. A lot of fans of the Devils feel this way. It might not be the as many who don't, but it's still a larger number than it should be. It's unfortunate.

I have a decent amount of friends that watch almost every game and still think Brodeur deserves to be the #1 and that he isn't finished. Like NJDevs4978 said, for a lot of people, their love and respect for Brodeur clouds their judgement.

#1250875 We Got Rutuu

Posted by thefiestygoat on 07 March 2014 - 01:32 AM

It was still a 3rd line though.  He needs to be a 2nd line center in order to be good.  He never had skilled linemates here to be successful.

So 3rd line automatically equals grind line? I hardly call playing with the likes of Ryder, Zubrus, Brunner, and Jagr, his 4 most common linemates, as playing with guys that aren't skilled.

#1243543 Fire DeBoer Thread

Posted by thefiestygoat on 02 February 2014 - 11:28 PM

Stephen Gionta is one of the better F/O men on the team. As long as most of his zone starts are in the offensive zone then I'm fine with him.

Zajac: 53.1% (904)
Zubrus: 51.7% (259)
Josefson: 48.6% (111)
Henrique: 44.7% (723)
Loktionov: 42.1% (280)
Gionta: 41.2% (376)
Elias: 41.0% (422)

#1243221 GDT: Devils at Predators (Devils west) 8:00 PM

Posted by thefiestygoat on 31 January 2014 - 10:48 PM

Pete DeBoer teams blowing late leads...seen this before. Unacceptable result, the Devils needed the 2 points, especially with the OOT scores not going their way. I've calmed down over the years and try not to get worked up about regular season results but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't starting to get down about this team making the playoffs. Not giving up but starting to lose confidence in this group.

I can't get on Schneider for this one. He made a mistake and never seemed to get set for the 1st goal against. Luckily, Hutton gifted Elias a goal after that. Can't blame Schneider for a 5v6 goal and the OT goal where Zidlicky kicked the puck for the perfect pass to Weber.

I thought Loktionov had a nice return in his limited action.

Ryder is absolutely maddening. He has one job and is horribly inconsistent at it. Now 10 games without a goal. Just 2 assists over that time.

#1241701 Brodeur embarrassed himself and the franchise today

Posted by thefiestygoat on 26 January 2014 - 05:21 PM

Brodeur certainly had a game to forget but I felt like the team embarrassed themselves as a whole. I can't put this all on Brodeur. Careless turnovers and bad positioning and they left Brodeur out to dry. I lost count of how many odd man rushes the Rangers had and they seemed to convert on almost every single one. My problem today is definitely with the team in the last 40 minutes and not Brodeur. Today was really a perfect storm of everything that could go wrong, going wrong.

#1239883 2013-2014 Lineup/Roster Thread

Posted by thefiestygoat on 19 January 2014 - 03:20 PM

I'm not really disputing that Josefson is probably better, or at least I didn't mean to give that impression.

My point is that Josefson won't make the team better in any significant way. Maybe he would better on the PK, but it's hard to make the PK any better than it already is. He might be better defensively at even strength, but again, it's hard for the Devils to get any better if you're basing defensive play on shots against.

Offense is really where you want significant improvement, and Josefson isn't really going to advance the ball in that area so much that it'll impact the bottom line.

Getting upset over Gionta's playing time is really just a distraction.

Considering the Devils don't have any quality offensive forward prospects, unless you are high on Boucher, they should be trying to work Josefson and Loktionov into the line up. Letting a career AHLer with a last name play over them while they rot in the stands is irresponsible. I guess it doesn't matter at this point, Loktionov is probably going to the KHL next year and Josefson's days in NJ are numbered. But hey, we're keeping Stephen Gionta happy and can re-sign him to another 2 year deal for DeBoer. Hooray asset management.

#1239879 2013-2014 Lineup/Roster Thread

Posted by thefiestygoat on 19 January 2014 - 02:57 PM

My point is that Josefson is not really significantly better than Gionta, and even if he is, it just does not matter. (He's a big part of the penalty kill that is the best in the league, so he must be doing something right). It's almost like having a debate about whether we'd be better off with Janssen or Aaron Ashem. Maybe Ashem will provide a little more offense, but it doesn't make the team any better or worse.

So if there's something to the rest of the players liking Gionta and him being good for morale, I'll take that over maybe the very marginal improvement that maybe Josefson would bring in the measurable things.

Except he is. I just gave links that show Josefson has been better than Gionta in passing and zone exits. The Devils PK may be solid but is Gionta really that much of an asset? Especially over Josefson? Gionta has the worst Goals Against per 20 minutes rate on the Devils PK for any Devils forward by a decent amount. He's also the 5th most used forward on the PK in ice time per game. Josefson averages roughly the same amount of SH time when he plays yet has a better goals against rate. Gionta actually has the 9th worst Goals Against per 20 minutes rate for forwards in the NHL. Gionta seems to be the weak link there.

Gionta being well liked in the locker room defintely doesn't make up for his on ice play. I doubt it really makes his teammates play that much better.

IMO Josefson hasn't been given a long enough try with decent line mates, he has been screwed by DeBoer and S. Gionta doesn't belong in the NHL he is a lifetime AHL player.

Amen. I don't know how many points DeBoer was expecting him to put up with Janssen and playing 10 minutes a night.

Pretty "meh" period. Unfortunately Gionta's defensive lapse resulted in a goal against.
