take it from a buddy of mine and my brother who is a diehard Devils fan and is a national PBP broadcaster for many major sports including the NFL - he's never called a hockey game in his life and has said it is by far the hardest to call. keep in mind though - they're not asking dano to do PBP - he's the color guy (like chico before him). sure he steps on his words all the time but he's trying to explain the game in the simplest ways to the most people. sal is great but has an even harder time stuttering through what he wants to say. with that said, his breakdowns and observations are light years ahead of daneyko's and that might not play as well during the game when you don't have as much time to break down what's going on during the play or quick stoppages. where ken and steve do work though is that they usually don't step on eachothers' words and have a good chemistry working together. we were spoiled for decades with doc who has no equal as a PBP guy that could also bring out the appropriate color from his partner (chico for many years who also seemed like he was watching another game) by pretty much telling him what to say.

When my daughter gets to that age when she starts to blame me for whatever horrible things she thinks I've done...first on the list might be me taking her to the game this Saturday. Watching this team at the moment definitely has the potential to leave scars...

I've been working on a player evaluation project that's largely analytics-based, and something I've noticed while I've been doing research is that Gabriel has to be one of the least valuable forwards to play in the NHL this year. He literally ranks in the bottom percentile for just about every relevant advanced stat, he's just so, so bad. At least he brings my ape brain some joy occasionally when he gets in a fight, lol

Actually, I do think they try quite a bit. But effort can't cover up for lack of experience, and more importantly, lack of talent.

I think Dano is fine, there are way worse people out there around the league that do his job. Hell look at the Rangers and Islanders in this area alone.

Meh, Yakovlev and Santini are far from proven, Carrick's nothing special, Greene's been declining, no Vats...it ain't good...

I don't think being asked to do national TV is anything to be used for how good someone is either. Look how many people complained about last night's national TV game broadcasters in this thread alone. Pierre Maguire and Mike Millbury are hated by the vast majority of people yet both are on national TV every week. I don't care about football or baseball but everyone seems to hate Joe Buck too. Hell if I had it my way there would be an option just to hear the sound from the arena and that's how I would watch.

I'll say it again, the only free agent theoretically available that would have helped the team was Tavares and that wasn't happening. I believe the reports that he tried to trade for Karlsson out right and that he was looking to pry something valuable from Tampa in order to take Callahan's contract. So he's not in Sandy Alderson territory, at least not yet. This offseason will be different. You have what looks to be some really good free agents and other teams that need to trade good players for cap reason. If it's more of the same "build through the draft" and make "value" moves, the Devils will be at the bottom of the league again next year, and I can't imagine he makes it.

San Jose clinched last night. The West is really going to be a dog fight for the final two spots, even Edmonton technically has somewhat of a realistic shot to make it, being only 7 points out with 10 games to go, though they hurt their chances by losing last night. I wouldn't be surprised to see Chicago get in, and part of me thinks they deserve it with the season Kane has had. Colorado seems to be trending downward and I can't believe they might miss the post-season after how dominant their top line was early in the season - that train went off the tracks pretty hard - I mean, we barely made the playoffs last year with pretty much one player carrying the team....how are they possibly not going to do it with 3 players carrying them? In the East, Philly really hurt their chances big time by losing to Montreal last night. Instead of being 1 point behind the Habs, they're 5, and 6 out of the last spot. Carolina is playing well and winning the games they need to, a huge shootout win last night against their closest competition in the Pens - looks like they're going to assure themselves a spot. You gotta be pretty made if you're a Buffalo Sabres fan. They started off really well too, and they finally looked like they had a pretty solid roster, one that was well balanced on offense and defense, and some decent reliable goaltending as well, and now they're 13 points out of the race. They don't really need it, because they have a pretty good young core already, but for them they're basically going to end this season without any playoff hockey and also picking towards the back of the top 10....you have to think of this season as a pretty big failure if you're them.

I’ve never had a problem with him. Is his voice great? No. Does he ramble, and act like a homer? Yep. But there’s way worse around the league. You all should have heard how bad some of the early CBJ broadcasts were when they first got a team. They were awful lol I can’t stand Buffalo’s either. And then there’s some that are just flat out boring, and put me to sleep. I think Cangi and Dano are at least somewhat entertaining.

Right now Erika and Bryce are probably downing shots somewhere and saying "Thank God we don't have to cover THIS sh!t tonight...another Jager my good man!" And sadly right now I'm thinking it's nice to get a break from Dano...Devils really gotta start to wonder if he should really keep his gig...just not sure how much more time this "experiment" should get, because if anything, I think he's getting worse at this...
