  1. I need it to be October.

  2. We keep talking about guys like Laine, Marner and Gusev, but we all know Shero is working on something none of us is even thinking of. It's what Shero does.

  5. Love Taylor and believe he does sign here and without too much stress, but no way in hell should it take anywhere near 13M. To me that's crazy.

  6. lots of team are waiting for the arbitration process and signing their own RFAS before they really commit i guess...

  7. I kind of feel the same way. I feel like we’re only halfway done. If we can get the Hall situation wrapped up and maybe add one more scorer and a defender, I feel like “win now” might be too ambitious, but “playoff bound” seems in sight. One step at a time. Based on the feeling that we’re halfway done, I feel like Shero definitely has something else up his sleeve. But I’ll also be very disappointed if he doesn’t come through.

  8. It’s a real league and the numbers he’s put up are very impressive, but not a slam dunk that it translates in the NHL. A case in point is Eeli Tolvanen, who put up very impressive KHL numbers as a 19 year old but he hasn’t made an NHL impact yet. I guess I wouldn’t get into a bidding war over him, but I would happily take him if he comes relatively cheap.

  10. We can speculate just as easily that Hall will accept something of a discount (say the Seguin contract taking taxes into account) to allow Ray to make a huge splash and get a Marner or Laine and taking into account what the organization has done for him over the past three plus years. Going back to the four first rounders for Marner, I don’t think it should deter us at all if it can otherwise work out. You have to assume the team will be very good immediately, and none of those picks will be lottery picks. We have a ton of prospects in the system, some of whom have not even signed their ELCs that should be able to play those bottom six/bottom pairing roles that help keep the team cap compliant without having to rely on the first rounders to do it. If the time comes that we have to sell someone like Boqvist or an improved Zacha at something of a discount for cap reasons, so be it. It didn’t kill the Capitols having to do that with Mojo.

  11. I would bet it's just Brooks pulling some more crap out of his ass. Yet here we are debating it.

  12. Yeah I love the guy, want him to retire a devil and all that, but if his honest-to-god ask is 13 million... Trade him. If the guy wants to win, which by all accounts is his number one priority at this point, he should understand that taking up that much cap space isn't the way to do it.

  13. I don't see any reason why the Devils would "begin at 13 million per year." Why? Because the rumored offer from CBJ to Panarin, which he didn't take, was 12M? That said, I think Panarin's UFA will factor into Hall's agent's negotiations and it's not totally crazy to think talks could have some bumps. Should the Devils really just pay Hall whatever he wants? He'll be 29 when the new contract starts and he has dealt with various health issues throughout his career - both of which are points the Devils should probably raise in negotiations. How much do the Devils have to lowball Hall for him to want to see what July 1st, 2020 has to offer? I'm not trying to spell doom, these are just the questions I have been asking myself. I think Hall wants to win more than he wants eke out every last dollar - so the Devils putting a really good team together right now helps them make a more persuasive case for a sub-Brooks hysteria level cap hit.

  14. 13M for Hall is just ridiculous. Given his track record with injuries we would be paying Hall 13M and lets be honest, we probably aren't getting full seasons out of him moving forward.

  15. Some of the dipsh!ts masquerading as “aces” on the Mets should take a good long look at Max Scherzer’s body of work since he signed with the Nationals. Guy has been an absolute fvcking beast...and at 34, is showing ZERO signs of slowing up. He’ll probably take home his fourth Cy Young...and oh yeah, he can actually get through a season without winding up on the IL every year. Guy is a Hall of Famer right now as far as I’m concerned...I say he gets in on short-term dominance (check out his last seven seasons, including this one...WHIP of 0.977, for starters).

  16. I am sure between the two of them it wasn't worth getting assault charges over a large bar tab jeez. And the next article recommendation has Brooks breathlessly extolling his belief that Taylor halls contract negotiations begin at 13 million per year. Jeez.

  17. Makes you wonder if this new NHL TV deal really will be that lucrative for the teams.

  18. Just to add to Hobby's Deli stories: On the Patty Jersey Retirement game day me and thecoffecake hit up Hobby's wearing green hats and one of the owners came out and chatted with us. He told us that the hat Patty wore on the ice after the St Patrick's day game years ago came from Hobby's (they were giving out on St Patrick's day that year) and he even had one they had kept up on the wall. Cool people.

  20. It's related because you compared their point totals directly...I'm just pointing out that there's other factors to consider beyond that (like Kovy's age, what he was likely to sign for, etc). I could've understood Kovy on a one-year "show me" deal, even if it was $6 million plus. It was when LA signed him for THREE seasons that I thought "What the hell?!" As far as the point total goes, in Gusev's case I'd want to know more about how well will his game translate to the NHL (some guys put up nice eye-glance numbers, but don't necessarily see such numbers lead to good things in the world's best hockey league). And how much is he looking for to get that chance? I've read 2 years at $4 million per (and I just saw that Neb00rs has mentioned that too). That doesn't seem like too much of a risk...even if he didn't work out, he won't be a cap-killer..,and assuming he wouldn't be a total bust over his first season (but not what was hoped for, or simply just not the right fit), some other team might be even be willing to give him a shot and trade for him, hoping he still might have bargain potential.

  21. A little like making a big deal out of a preseason goal and declaring that Kovy still had it? Seriously though, with Kovy there were some red flags...he was putting up numbers on a very stacked team (but not like Gusev may not be benefitting from that as well), and he was starting to get up there in years...and even in his prime, had often been one-dimensional until Lemaire got through to him that he may want to start working on other aspects of his game. It was hard to really gauge what mid-30s Kovy was going to bring during his return to the NHL...and even worse, he was potentially going to be a fairly expensive mistake. The money he wound up getting had more to do with what he was as an NHLer, as opposed to what he might be. I was actually semi-hopeful that he might go to the Rangers, mostly because I thought that one could really blow up. The team that takes a shot at Gusev is taking a chance for sure, but I'm curious to see what the cost is, if someone actually deals for him. I'm open to the idea though...not in a "Shero's gotta do this!" kind of way, but definitely not opposed...don't really know how interested Shero is.

  22. The place is packed with Devils memorabilia. They're super involved with the Devils. The first time I went in there, I was wearing a Scott Gomez jersey that I had taped the day he signed with the Rangers. It fell off in the car on the way to the arena, but the tape had left some residue behind. Someone I presume to be an owner came out and chatted with me, asking me why I had decided to take the tape off (it was probably 2011 or 2012 at this point). I told him I had no idea the tape was gone, and it must've just fallen off. He went behind the counter, came out with a roll of duct tape, and re-taped it himself. The same piece of tape is still on that jersey.
