  1. Ruff isn't at all who I wanted for the new head coach, but now that this is where we are, I'm willing to be open and optimistic, no point in pissing and moaning for the next 5 months before the team even hits the ice. Ruff has shown himself capable in the past of coaching good offensive teams and getting the most out of his top offensive producers, so if the thinking is giving our weapons like Nico and Jack the keys to the car, I can't say I'm against it in that sense. Defensively, I'm a little concerned, and they'll need a good assistant to work with our defensemen and penalty kill, whether that's James Patrick or Nas is anyone's best guess.

  3. i dont even know what i'm hoping for lol All i want is to get 2 extra good first round picks this year and MTL, ARI and NYR not winning the lottery. The season being cancelled can really either facilitate some of those things just as much as costing us those things... we just gotta hope for the best

  6. Like who? The only one of note I’ve heard is Travis Hamonic.

  7. This year’s. I really don’t see Vancouver taking a step back next season. They have a pretty good young team. I guess it’s possible Hughes could have a sophomore slump though, or Pettersson, Boeser, etc could get hurt (not that I’d wish for that). But this draft is supposed to be the deepest in a while. Rather have it now.

  8. After a few days of packing and other pre-move crap I’m at this position: If we actually play aggressive hockey and not that “well we can play a period of attacking hockey, then play scared the rest of the game” crap we’ve been doing, I don’t care who the coach is. It could be the two headed monster from Sesame Street with the horns for all I freaking care anymore. He’s not Hynes, he’s not Nas and he’s coached actual NHL teams before. Give me hockey back already.

  9. Dude, relax. Point is a lot of people were upset when Lemaire came in meanwhile there was a lot of unseen good. The devils team that lost in the playoffs was flawed. Lemaire being able to get a buy in from Kovalchuk to completely change his style is one of those unseen good things. Tyler Seguin developed into a rock star under Ruff. As did a lot of the young core in Dallas. Team is still a ways away, and if Ruff can have a similar effect on Nico and Hughes we’ll be a lot closer.

  10. They brought in Simmonds, Subban and Gusev last off season at what 20M? Come on with this. You don't spend money for the sake of it, if you think there's a better fit out there, money aside - or at least a similar fit. I wouldn't sign anyone to a 5 year deal coaching right now, in fact, I'd likely not sign any coach to a five year deal who wasn't already in the org.

  11. The last time we hired a coach that was moaned and groaned about - Lemaire, 10 years ago now - we won the division and begged him to come back the next year to clean up Johnny Macs mess. Lemaire ended up setting the table for Deboer in 11/12. My initial reaction was not positive. However, track record matters and so does experience.

  12. Something that stood out to me on the video conference was Fitz responded to a question about "Why Lindy" and one of the first things he said about the coaching search was he wanted HC experience. That confirms to me what most of us suspected that Nas was never really a consideration for the job.

  13. Again, Ruff is not who I would have ideally chosen and I wish they would have just paid Laviolette the money he was allegedly asking for, but I don't know how Ruff wasn't the 3rd best option out of what was reported (Nas, Ruff, Gallant, Lavy, Stevens). What has John Stevens done in his entirely mediocre career that would have made him a better option than Ruff? It's also entirely disingenuous to suggest he's been bad since 2015, the 2015 Stars missed the playoffs as the 10 seed because of the league's 3rd worst save percentage despite having optimistic underlying numbers, the 2016 Stars won 50 games and finished in 2nd in the NHL that season during the regular season, 2017 was admittedly rocky, and then he was hired to be an assistant coach in a role that didn't suit his strengths as a coach. Again, I'm not jumping for joy over this, but forgive me for trying to be optimistic instead of trying to see the worst in every situation when it comes to this team.

  14. And I'm sure the fans with Lavi as a coach would've been like "PLAYOFFS OR DIE" and what kind of pressure on the kids would that have been. This is going to be a slow process, would rather be surprised than disappointed.

  15. Yeah, they're such a knowledgeable and intelligent fanbase, we should definitely believe everything they say.

  16. I imagine a new staff will come in and it's likely a courtesy of giving the current staff a chance to talk and see if Lindy thinks there's a fit, Nas is the only one I'd be interested in keeping on since he's done a great job with our PK but I wouldn't be incredibly excited to keep him either. We know most hockey coaches have their group of guys they like to keep with them though, James Patrick has been an assistant on every team Ruff has head coached since 2006-07 so he likely gets a call, I know Patrick filled the role in the past that Nas is in right now so I'd have to imagine if it came down to those two, Ruff would probably go with his guy.

  18. I was SHOCKED to see that he was only 60 years old. I figured he was 75 at least. Really don't get all of the hate. It has been a while since he was successful sure, but it's not like the Rangers teams he has been assistant on have been stacked rosters that under-performed. Two longish coaching stints (i consider 4 years to be long at this point in the coach firing world we live in) show he must have been doing something right. Seeing some takes along the lines of "Rangers fans are happy to see him go therefore he is a bad coach!"...Yeah and as we all know Rangers fans are the top hockey minds in the world! Seriously get the hell out of here with that take.

  19. Not thrilled given some of the other coaches who are available. Fitz has earned his shot at the GM job so thats good. My limited understanding of Ruff is he is an offensive minded coach. Dallas had arguably the best offense in the league with Ruff in charge. What I have never understood is why the Rangers hired him to coach their D. He's obviously not very good at it. IF IF IF we get a good coach for the D, this could be ok? Still not thrilled. Definitely wanted Gallant or Laviolette. Time to hope for the best. LGD!

  20. He's not Nass, I'm gonna call it a night on that high note.

  21. Happy about this. He's a good veteran coach who has won before. He's managed all kinds of players over the past several decades, every kind of ego and headcase you can imagine. He's not too old to where he may not have the energy for the job (60 years old) he's never won a Cup before so you know the fire burns for that. He's got a Jack Adams trophy. Not a lot to dislike about this hiring.
