  1. I watched a lot of video on Holtz (and most other top 10 prospects) leading up to this draft. It's a shame that the WJC was the best exposure to him for many of us, because apart from one game, it wasn't a good display of what he has to offer as a player. If the Devils had drafted any other player with the 7th pick, I'd still say the same thing: Holtz is the best shooter from that draft. But he's not only that, he's an underrated playmaker/passer, an above average skater, very good on the PP, and not a guy who's going to shy away physically. While he's not likely to be the guy carrying a top line in the NHL (e.g. Pastrnak), he still is a pretty complete player. He'll just need a Hischer/Hughes to reach his potential. I've seen this guy score goals from all over the offensive zone: from the blue line to the goal line. And he had kept it up in the SHL this year leading up the the WJC, where he has since cooled off. Then I saw this video: You're of course not seeing much play away from the puck in this video, and it's a small sample size. But it's striking how different he looks here. The shots he's getting off are either being blocked (which he's normally good at avoiding) or are these low percentage slappers from far out. He's making quick, panicked plays. He is getting outskated when he has the puck. His creativity with playmaking is nearly entirely gone. Losing his edge, losing puck battles, giving up on plays early - all more frequently than normal. He isn't playing with the intensity he normally plays with. Maybe his mental game is totally thrown off, and he's having a hard time getting that back. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing with some kind of nagging injury. Stupid thing to do at this stage of his career. But the way that he's avoiding tough areas, making the easy play when he faces opposition, and getting so easily outskated has me feeling like there's got to be something more to it than just being on a cold streak.

  5. Oh agreed, I just know some people who when presented with a choice between a so-so english show and and great foreign language show would choose the former. But I was able to get my parents (whose typical fare is more the Downton Abbey crowd) into Dark so that should tell you that anyone can do it! Yeah for Dark I really appreciated the subtitles because it forced me to focus on the show and it's a show that needs a lot of attention, there's so many details you can miss. Plus the german actors are just amazing in that and the dub does them a disservice.

  6. Dark was fantastic. And subtitles should never be a reason for someone to not try something new. You’re are missing out on a whole world full of great movies and shows if you limit yourself to just your own language. I loved Bong Joon-Ho’s comments about that when he won the Oscar for Parasite.

  7. He has no confidence right now. It’s plain as day to see. He is playing with no confidence. When your confidence is shaky, your game is shaky, and you do the exact things you talked about: indecision, making panicked plays, losing puck battles, etc. Holtz needs to get a little confidence in his game again, and hopefully that will get him back to the level he was playing at pre-WJC.

  8. For TV shows, lots of great ones mentioned throughout the thread but I will add 4 "non-mainstream" shows I've enjoyed that I haven't seen mentioned: Nathan for You - docu-reality "prank" series. Prank is in quotes because most of the time the butt of the joke is the host. Much of it is very cringe-inducing comedy so you have to like that but I have never laughed harder at a TV show than this one. The finale is a two hour episode that might be one of the best two hours of TV I have ever seen. DARK - Netflix Sci-fi show. One of the best time-travel paradox stories I've ever seen. In addition to the sci-fi aspect there is real character/family dynamics. Season 1 is imo on par with the best of Breaking Bad or Sopranos. Very rare to have a sci-fi show where the entire plot is planned and buttoned up in 3 seasons. The catch is it's german-language which will put a lot of ppl off but the subtitles are so worth it, better than the english dub. Detectorists- British comedy by Mackenzie Crook (the Jim character from the original office) about the metal detecting hobby. Can't think of a better light-hearted, feel-good, relaxing show for the stress of quarantine. Very easy to binge, but you have to like british humor. Ramy- Comedy/drama written by and starring a guy who grew up in Rutherford area (it's set in NJ) about his experience as a muslim. I'm a catholic school kid around the same age and I find it really interesting. I haven't started season 2 yet but I think it's gotten good reviews...

  14. I think you’d pair well with zacha as your center.

  15. Gotta admit, not that I’m close to worried about a kid so young, but a part of me keeps wondering about a “sniper” that doesn’t seem to find the back of the net all that much.

  16. The center and the right wing have some serious chemistry from what I know, so I think we're in good shape!

  17. This is what Subban, Wood, Comrie, Murray, Boqvist, Tennyson, Wedgewood, Kulikov, Maltsev must see looking at Bastian, Gusev, Sharangovich, Bratt, Carrick, Dell, Hughes, Johnsson, Kuokkanen, McLeod, Palmieri, Severson, Smith, Tennyson, Vatanen, Zacha and Zajac

  18. I feel rather confident we'll be seeing Holtz in New Jersey in 2021-22, it's possible the organization could want him to marinate an extra season in Sweden but I think he would be ready to ride shotgun with one of our centers in that sesaon. We could be in for another big youth push next season, because I'm also expecting both Bahl and Mercer to make big pushes to make the team out of camp in 2021-22.
