  1. Let's hope Montreal doesn't have internet anymore...

  2. Now isn’t the time to worry about Holtz IMO. Sure he went cold toward the end of the season and into the playoffs, but he still finished at essentially a 1 p/g pace. That’s in his first full professional season in North America, after scoring at under a 0.5 p/g pace in the SHL (and even lighter production in the AHL during the games he had that season). That’s some great progress for him, and definitely something to be encouraged by. I would say it far outweighs a cold streak (common for many goal scorers) to finish the season. I think there’s a very good chance he makes the Devils to start next season.

  3. I’m pretty high on Okhotyiuk. I could see him paired with Luke in a couple years. Okhotyiuk kicking ass and Luke racking up points with the top line with Jack as center.

  6. Not to mention working with professional trainers and developing lower body strength. Holtz’ skating will be fine. There are plenty of all stars in the NHL that aren’t top end speed skaters (Tarasenko, Kopitar, Suzuki, Forsberg, etc…)

  7. In my opinion, it's a Luke Hughes type of situation. Slaf obviously has the physicality to hold his own in the NHL. But I think he would benefit from refining his game a bit. I believe his upside to be just huge, and I truly hope the Devils pick him, but he's not without his flaws at this stage of his development. Because of his skill level, he can often be careless, trying to do too much or be too fancy. It can often lead to rushes in the opposite direction. He has the work ethic to recover from these mistakes sometimes, but I would like to see him tighten up some of these things before getting to the NHL. In lesser leagues, I feel that these sorts of things are passable, but in the NHL, it'll limit his ice time. But man is his potential just sky high. This player could be the most electrifying winger the Devils have had since Kovalchuk.

  8. I don't think players ever go from being below average skaters to top end, but players can work on their mechanics to get to the point where a bad skater can become NHL average.

  9. Well yeah, I wasn't starting a debate as to whether or not I'd take those odds, or ever said "Look at all the busts in there"; I never put a quantity to the actual amount of busts, just mentioned that there were some, and there are. Go back into the 1990s and you've got Falloon and Chyzowski...and then you've got the guys who clearly had the talent, but due to general lack of motivation, didn't get as much as out of their abilities as they should have (like Sylvian Turgeon, Jimmy Carson). And yeah, some guys like Murray and Patrick were derailed by injuries, which can happen to anyone. In agreement that I can't call Kakko a bust yet (much as I'd love to). But yeah, goes without saying, chances are at #2OA you're going to come away with, at the very least, a solid contributor who (as long as he stays healthy) should be able to help your team for several years, with a good chance that most of his prime years will be spent on your team, with not too long of a development cycle.

  11. It actually reminds me of Parcells coming to the Jets tbh…right guy, right time for a franchise that lost their way. And yeah Bill couldn’t quite get the Jets over the hump but the Jets were for the most part a solid team for about a decade or so after his arrival. Another DH tomorrow lol

  13. One thing about the Utica team is that they have their fair share of AAAA-types (we've known that from the beginning of the season)...it's not like they were ever chock-full of future stars, no matter how hot that they were coming out of the gates...but at the same time, as we also know, the AHL is not where those guys tend to spend much (if any at all) time anyway. The AHL is more of a place to develop potential second-liners who need seasoning, and mostly third and fourth-liners (or often lower-pair defensemen). Does anyone envision Luke Hughes playing more than a handful of games with the Comets, at most? Mercer skipped the AHL entirely. The Comets probably could've had a better and more consistent overall season if the team was kept intact, but as was previously mentioned, the parent club will always take priority (and they should), so if Daws gets a callup, then sorry Utica, you're stuck with a guy like Mitens to take his place. And yeah, the very good news is that it looks like the Devils might be able to graduate some players from there very soon. If Holtz, Zetterlund, and Okhotyuk all manage to come up and stick and do a solid job in their roles, none of us will care much about the 2021-22 Comets season ending on a bit of a thud. Or the fact that many of their players won't have much of a future with the Devils.

  14. Holtz went from looking like he would compete for a NJ Devils opening night roster back in November to looking like another year in Utica is likely in the cards for him. His shot is still really nice but his hockey IQ looks average and his skating is still pretty bad. I know it is early, but I am already mentally preparing myself to pencil him in as the worst of the 3 Devils 2020 first round picks.

  15. Brady, Jack and Matthew up front. Quinn and Luke on the blue line. The Drama Line.

  16. Probably not, but Fitz is their cousin, so we at least have a connection if he wants to come play with another American star player in NJ…

  18. I think you’re confusing Okhotiuk for Mukhamadullin. Guadana was talking about the former (who was a 2nd round pick).

  19. Both defensemen went behind the net, leaving Colton wide open in front with seconds to go. What an awful play. I thought I was watching us for a split second.

  20. Ugh Tampa breaks the tie with 3 seconds left in the game. Great pass - great shot, though.

  23. True, we kind of had the same history with a bunch of disappointing Sweds before Bratt, too, though… And I think they might have something in Okhotiuk. But to be clear I was half joking. I don’t think anyone expects Gritsyuk to be the next Kaprizov. But if he has to take his time getting over here it could be worth it if he’s an immediate impact player once he does.

  25. I did rank Okhotyuk as our top 5 prospect before previous season. When it wasn’t mainstreamly. He is our best defensive defenseman prospect, miles ahead. His skill combo is absolutely great, and he could cost us not so much, because his offensive potential is questionable. But you know what - defensemen could make impact once or twice in the game, but they could help minute after minute, if they could win most of puck battles, have speed and strong gap control etc. it’s a non stop work. I truly believe this kid will help devils in the hardest minutes when devils will have this type of minutes. Fitz jr is just a guy.
