  1. With our travel day tomorrow, and the season now on pause, figured what better time than to do my annual post bump. Over the past few weeks, I became a certified Standards of Conduct, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Suicide Prevention instructor. It’s been about three years coming but finally the timing worked where I was able to make it happen. On Monday, in an effort to think outside the box for the instruction, I relieved the events of 5 years ago in narrative form and emphasized to the attendees the importance of how the warning signs, even looking back now, weren’t there at all. We talked about how a simple text literally can change someone’s path and that no one should be afraid to ask for help nor reach out to help. There’s plenty of protections for individuals who get help that they can still continue their careers, and absolutely be successful in doing so without blowback from saying “hey, I need a wingman…” It felt great to hear the feedback of, “wow, finally an instructor who shares their experiences instead of just reciting the slides” pretty frequently from the 4 courses I taught that day alone. With COVID deciding to be a Dick again and possibly screwing up a lot of people’s plans, be that helping voice folks. See if your buddy’s from years ago are still doing well, or that friend you just saw yesterday and pounded a beer with us actually good when they got home. Lord knows us Devils’ fans need it (see, deep posts can still have some humor.) I appreciate all of you guys, wishing the best as always. - Jag

  5. For far too long I thought the lyric to that song was "I ain't no hollow black girl" and was like "how is Gwen not getting pulled up on this?"

  6. Said it elsewhere but one of the best things about this crazy streak is that it’s not based on anything freakish. The Devils rank middle of the pack in shooting% and save%…yes, they are going to lose some games eventually, but at least it won’t be due to severe regression to the mean. They’re not a fluke. They’re just really fvcking GOOD. Will be a blast to find out HOW good as this season unfolds. L G M F D!!!

  7. The organisationis going to massively regret this trade. You all seem to have such short term memories, and have completely skipped over how vital Ty Smith is to the Devil's. He is the sole reason Jack Hughes did not die of malnourishment for the last two seasons. If Ty isn't there with instructions for broccoli or how to grill chicken our franchise player is probably curled up in a corner eating pocket lint. Have some respect.

  13. Marner becomes a huge pansy in the playoffs, he's a mental midget, and he has a psycho dad. I think I would rather use those assets on a true, big trigger man rather than another elite passer. Maybe Boston makes Pavel Zacha available. 6'4", elite shot, kills penalties. Imagine him on a line with Nico and Bratt.

  16. Every year this hits like a sledgehammer because it's a way many people live but you would never know on the surface. For those of you who maybe curious of what it's like I was asked to write about my experience a few months ago for a website that was created by an amazing young lady who's brother who I happen to love like a son suffered a horrific TBI. She on the surface thought my story would be inspiring. Truthfully I find it dark and as the Shinedown song goes, My Monsters Are Real. Just last week my daughter and I went to see Smith and Myers (the two lead guys from Shinedown they do an acoustic tour when Shinedown is off ) and Brent Smith started talking about the next song and how much it meant to him because he opened up about his addictions he still fights but that Monsters are real and some people have to deal with them every day and it's really really heavy. I just looked at my daughter who halfway through his talk grabbed my hand and handed me a tissue. Without her the Monsters would have won out by now there's not question about it. Anyway it's not meant to be about me, it's meant to be about you have no idea what someone else is going through unless you live it and those of us that live it are most thankful that you and our families truly don't understand. We don't want you to understand the level of anxiety and depression, ever. We don't ever want you to live it. Anyway it's about 15 min read, and I didn't write the title, it certainly doesn't fit my outlook on life most days. The part that is certainly 100% accurate is I can listen and relate to others who live with similar demons within. The kind you can't see from the outside, the kind I think are the most dangerous. My sincerest wish is for you and your families to be safe both physically and emotionally always. Everything else well it truly doesn't matter. Sorry for rambling. https://www.redefyne.org/post/scott-s-anoxic-brain-injury-an-inspiration-a-work-in-progress

  18. Great quotes from Jack: "I think this contract shows that the team is extremely invested in me, and I'm really dedicated to the organization. Mutually, we're both really excited." "I will have lived here at least 11 years by the end of this contract," Hughes said. "I've dedicated most of my adult life to New Jersey." "There are a lot of 86 (jerseys) out there when I look around," Hughes said. "The fans really appreciate me here. I'm just extremely thankful to be a New Jersey Devil. The fans are awesome. They've treated me like gold ever since I've come here. "Now I have to return the favor and be a star for the next decade. I know it'll come, and I know it'll happen. It's an extremely exciting time in New Jersey."

  20. Tough one tonight, obviously…Oilers are giving them up in bunches but we all know they can score in bunches too. Glad VV got a little extra rest by not playing on Saturday…hopefully he can continue his own personal streak (8 wins and counting). Would love to see Dawson find the net tonight. L G M F D!!!

  24. This is the second game in a row where my main takeaway is that Marino is such a beast. And that is saying a lot since there was so much to like about that game. But, what an amazing trade Fitz pulled off there.

  29. Like many of us, I was hoping for Slaf, but was still excited about Wright at #2 if Slaf went 1OA. Crazy that Wright was not first on at least 3 teams' lists, and probably not even second on some of those too. Anyway, regarding Nemec, there are a lot of things I really like about this pick. Great posts by @MB3in this thread, but to add to those: First, I think he's arguably the only player in the top 5-6 picks without any red flags. Slaf didn't produce very well for a first overall pick. Same with Cooley, who didn't exactly separate himself from his teammates in a much weaker league. Wright wasn't dominant in a season he really should have been. And Gauthier might have been a reach given his good but not great production. Nemec on the other hand passes both the eye test and the stats test. He really did have an excellent season. And if you remember when we were following Slaf at the world championships, when he was on pace to break Laine's points record...Nemec also consistently made the list of top scoring players in their draft year at the WC (of all time) - and as a defenseman! That's pretty impressive. He has not only produced, but distinguished himself as a top player, at every level. I mean... 17 points in 19 playoff games in the top Slovakian league this season? That's nuts, and good for second on the team in points. The other thing that I find encouraging about this pick, is I really feel like it is a BPA pick. Nemec does not exactly fill a team need. Sure, he plays RD, which is an organizational weakness. But Nemec will be coming into an organization with Dougie Hamilton and Luke Hughes, players who share similar strengths to Nemec. He will be competing for top minutes and PP time with both of these players. I think Jiricek fits into the team needs a bit more (especially with Fitz's emphasis on big defensemen), and the fact that they went with Nemec shows that they must have really liked him as a player, separate from what the team is lacking. I also think he's closer to being NHL ready than many people think. He mentioned wanting to come to North America for the upcoming season. If that means AHL, it'll be awesome to watch him in the Utica games. Between him, Mukhamadullin, and Stillman, it'll look like another good season for them. He definitely has some aspects of his game that could use some strengthening, We got a good one, get hyped.

  30. I still get goosebumps watching this. I love this particular clip as it's 2 minutes long. In it you get to appreciate the mastery of Doc not only with the original call on the goal but also the genius of letting the moment speak for itself. From 18 second in to 1 minute 38 you just have the moment and it's perfect. The flip side of seeing this is realising it's been 10 years without to many more meaningful moments outside the Hall season. I literally crave nights like this again. Watching the playoffs this year and seeing the emotion hits home even more.

  31. Two best parts of this win: 1. Shesterkin getting pulled 2. Dominating them days after they "built a Cup contender" at the deadline The awesome showing from our core players wasn't so bad either.

  35. As of today: NHL save%: .901 Devils save%: .901 Yep...FINALLY, the Devils are getting league-average goaltending...obviously VV has been even better than that (.915). Nice to have that too.

  36. Every team has defensive breakdowns on a nightly basis. Every. Single. Team. I’m not sure why some folks here act like it’s unique to the Devils. Now if you want to argue it happens with them more then average that’s probably fair. And it’s definitely a problem. But the big difference is ours are pretty much guaranteed to end up in the back of the net. If your goalie can’t make a save when he’s screened, and can’t make a save when there’s a turnover, and can’t make a save on a clean shot from the blue line, and can’t control a puck shot right into his chest, and can’t stop a breakaway…is he even really a starting quality NHL goalie? It shouldn’t have to be 100% perfect conditions and routine saves at all times. And for the record I’m not even talking about just last night, this about our goaltending as a whole the past couple years.

  37. fvck yeah. I got selected so that i can actually buy tickets to go watch the world juniors here in Moncton I'm obviously going to try catch a Luke Hughes game if the US does play in Moncton (and not Halifax) Edit: Actually yeahhhhh. I just secured 2 tickets for the USA-Latvia game (which should be a bloodbath), also 2 for the USA-Slovakia game. If Nemec doesn't make the NHL we might get a Hughes vs Nemec game. Would be amazing. And 2 for USA vs Swtiz. Now hopefully Luke won't get injured and miss the tournament lol

  40. Gonna take the opportunity to brag about my kid here, she was just nominated for the local Catholic school version of the Tony Awards, which I’m told is quite a feat as a freshman. Guessing she will be really excited. I don’t know because, of course, she’s in rehearsal for another show right now. That’s how these things happen.
