  1. With our travel day tomorrow, and the season now on pause, figured what better time than to do my annual post bump. Over the past few weeks, I became a certified Standards of Conduct, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Suicide Prevention instructor. It’s been about three years coming but finally the timing worked where I was able to make it happen. On Monday, in an effort to think outside the box for the instruction, I relieved the events of 5 years ago in narrative form and emphasized to the attendees the importance of how the warning signs, even looking back now, weren’t there at all. We talked about how a simple text literally can change someone’s path and that no one should be afraid to ask for help nor reach out to help. There’s plenty of protections for individuals who get help that they can still continue their careers, and absolutely be successful in doing so without blowback from saying “hey, I need a wingman…” It felt great to hear the feedback of, “wow, finally an instructor who shares their experiences instead of just reciting the slides” pretty frequently from the 4 courses I taught that day alone. With COVID deciding to be a Dick again and possibly screwing up a lot of people’s plans, be that helping voice folks. See if your buddy’s from years ago are still doing well, or that friend you just saw yesterday and pounded a beer with us actually good when they got home. Lord knows us Devils’ fans need it (see, deep posts can still have some humor.) I appreciate all of you guys, wishing the best as always. - Jag

  3. how did i not know the all time PPG leader was dave andreychuk? fun fact and long story; at my first ever game, andreychuk was giving high-fives down the tunnel and his glove caught my tiny little grubby hand awkwardly and came off (he let it slide off so he didn’t rip my arm from the socket). He said “hey kid I need that” and I said something along the lines of “i promise it was an accident please don’t be mad at me” which made him laugh and then sign/throw me a puck. and THAT is why Jason Arnott is my favorite player! Andreychuk tossed it over to me, I asked my dad “who was that!?!?” and my dad, who didn’t watch hockey, said “i think it was number 25”, so I looked for #25 in my center ice catalog and saw the beautiful frosted tips of a man I would soon fall in love with. A full season later (and a Stanley Cup winning goal), I’ve got 2 arnie jerseys and 3 arnott posters on my wall. my uncle comes over the house and asks why I’m so in love with Arnott and I proudly display the puck he threw me. My uncle goes “this says number 23. not 25. I’m pretty sure it’s Andreychuk’s” and my world exploded in on itself like a dying star. I wound up throwing the puck into the woods because I’m nothing if not dramatic. But then for a christmas present my dad got me an autograph session with Arnott in the Edison mall. A week later he was traded. TLDR I have a complicated relationship with Dave Andreychuk.

  4. Every year this hits like a sledgehammer because it's a way many people live but you would never know on the surface. For those of you who maybe curious of what it's like I was asked to write about my experience a few months ago for a website that was created by an amazing young lady who's brother who I happen to love like a son suffered a horrific TBI. She on the surface thought my story would be inspiring. Truthfully I find it dark and as the Shinedown song goes, My Monsters Are Real. Just last week my daughter and I went to see Smith and Myers (the two lead guys from Shinedown they do an acoustic tour when Shinedown is off ) and Brent Smith started talking about the next song and how much it meant to him because he opened up about his addictions he still fights but that Monsters are real and some people have to deal with them every day and it's really really heavy. I just looked at my daughter who halfway through his talk grabbed my hand and handed me a tissue. Without her the Monsters would have won out by now there's not question about it. Anyway it's not meant to be about me, it's meant to be about you have no idea what someone else is going through unless you live it and those of us that live it are most thankful that you and our families truly don't understand. We don't want you to understand the level of anxiety and depression, ever. We don't ever want you to live it. Anyway it's about 15 min read, and I didn't write the title, it certainly doesn't fit my outlook on life most days. The part that is certainly 100% accurate is I can listen and relate to others who live with similar demons within. The kind you can't see from the outside, the kind I think are the most dangerous. My sincerest wish is for you and your families to be safe both physically and emotionally always. Everything else well it truly doesn't matter. Sorry for rambling. https://www.redefyne.org/post/scott-s-anoxic-brain-injury-an-inspiration-a-work-in-progress

  6. Great quotes from Jack: "I think this contract shows that the team is extremely invested in me, and I'm really dedicated to the organization. Mutually, we're both really excited." "I will have lived here at least 11 years by the end of this contract," Hughes said. "I've dedicated most of my adult life to New Jersey." "There are a lot of 86 (jerseys) out there when I look around," Hughes said. "The fans really appreciate me here. I'm just extremely thankful to be a New Jersey Devil. The fans are awesome. They've treated me like gold ever since I've come here. "Now I have to return the favor and be a star for the next decade. I know it'll come, and I know it'll happen. It's an extremely exciting time in New Jersey."

  8. Sorry but holy sh!t this is a terrible take. The fact that you put an "LOL" in this reply made my stomach actually fvcking turn. You're talking about a room full of people who knew that their teammate got raped. And instead of doing the right thing, like -- I don't know -- call the motherfvcking police? -- they stayed silent to protect the legacy of winning a shiny trophy. I know that hockey fans and sports fans put winning above all else, and in 99% of cases winning absolutely is the most important thing -- but this is the 1%. Johnathan Toews was the captain of that team. He knew that a teammate was raped. He let his teammates make fun of him for it. You're really going to call him non-essential? So you're saying that maybe the Blackhawks would've rushed to his defense if Kyle Beach was more talented at hockey? Playing hockey is a meritocracy, sure. Your basic rights as a human being are not.

  9. Kind of an interesting Lundqvist anecdote I may have shared on this forum before, but I'll share it again. I'm an architect, and when I was working in Manhattan we were hired to re-do the Lundqvist's kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. We're a few weeks into the project and I'm at the Lundqvist's house working with Therese (his wife) on some cabinetry layouts and going over backsplash samples. I had still never met Henrik, but I was excited to -- even though I hate the Rangers, it's always cool to meet a pro hockey player, especially one like Henrik. So we're working away and she says that she doesn't want to make an autonomous decision, and asks if I could hang out for 15 minutes because he was on his way back in from a workout. Sure, no problem. 15 minutes later he walks in drenched in sweat and gives me a kind of "hey, one second" point. No problem, he's the client. He walks over to the sink and is just GUZZLING down water, making these hideously awful gulping noises. Water was literally getting everywhere. At one point, he starts using his hands to scoop the water into his mouth. He's drenched at this point and Therese is totally un-phased. Finally he stops, looks at my (obviously confused?) face and says "Oh, I'm sorry. I'm just thirsty, and I don't have any cups."

  11. Two best parts of this win: 1. Shesterkin getting pulled 2. Dominating them days after they "built a Cup contender" at the deadline The awesome showing from our core players wasn't so bad either.

  15. I have not been so hyped about a Devils team in ten years. Really trying to keep realistic expectations, but there is so much to love about the way this team is looking. I think there's almost no chance that Dawson Mercer starts the season anywhere but NJ. He has looked better than most of his peers at every level, and preseason games against NHL players have been no exception. If the Devils are fortunate enough to win a Cup in the next 10 years, Dawson Mercer is the guy to win the Conn Smythe. Holtz has exceeded expectations too. His hockey IQ has been on full display in these preseason games. I think he needs to get a bit faster and stronger, and he'll be the perfect winger for Hughes. Looking like it will turn out to be an excellent 2020 draft. Hamilton looks as good as advertised. He's the top defenseman that this team has been lacking for over a decade. And I really like how he seems so connected with the team already, and particularly the young players. He is on board for this team's journey, and he'll be a great leader/locker room guy. Similarly, I think Ryan Graves will find his role as a highly effective shutdown defenseman. It'll turn out to be a good trade for the Devils. There are a handful of prospects who, not too long ago, each would have looked like our top prospect fighting for a spot. All of Foote, Clarke, Thompson, and Okhotiuk have made strong cases for themselves and will be hard to cut from the team. Thompson, especially, showed what kind of NHL future he has ahead of him. Honestly, a line of Foote-Thompson-Holtz in the AHL for a year wouldn't be the worst thing. Bernier's excellent performance against the Rangers shows he could be a 1B. Sharagovich and McLeod look like they have each taken a big step forward. Outside the NHL, I'm only hearing/seeing great things about Luke Hughes and Mukhamadullin. The future of this team is in really great shape. And probably most importantly, Jack Hughes is looking like an absolute superstar out there. I get that it is preseason, but he often looks a cut above literally everyone else on the ice. He made an impact on nearly every play. With all the talent above (and players like Tatar, Bratt, Hischier, Zacha, Smith, and Kuokkanen who we can expect to contribute offensively), he's finally in a spot where he can truly flourish. I think we'll see the Jack Hughes we were expecting when he was drafted. The only things that haven't been so positive are Blackwood's situation and Johnsson still looking like the same old Johnsson to me. Hopefully Zacha moves back to the LW too. When I think about what made the Devils a bad team last season, several things come to mind. One is there was no hope for a win when Blackwood was out. This will no longer be an issue (unless Blackwood's situation goes south) now that Bernier is in the mix. Another reason was how badly the team was hit by COVID-19. Dallas was another team that got hit badly - a team that made the Stanley Cup finals the year prior, but then couldn't even beat out the Preds for a playoff spot the following year. This will not be an issue this time around. The team was young and inexperienced last season, depending heavily on these same young players for production. With everyone being a year older, and bringing in veterans with a good track record, I don't think inexperience will be a weakness for the upcoming season. The team's defense was another big problem last season. Kulikov was one of the best defensemen we had. With the addition of Graves and Hamilton (basically a top pair itself), there's really only one wildcard (Siegenthaler), who already looks like he's better than last season. The rest of the defense is looking pretty solid. Lastly, our team captain and arguably top offensive contributor spent so much time out of the lineup. A healthy Nico will make a big difference. With all of these problems addressed this offseason, I don't think being a playoffs bubble team is that far out of the question. LGD!

  16. I like you and I always have, but I think this is a bad take. I'm an empath by nature but I have a total absence of empathy towards anyone and everyone who does not get this shot. What's the "bullsh!t" that's "being fed" to these morons? "Every single fvcking doctor says you should take this vaccine"? "Every single alt-right psychopath in government you worship has already gotten this vaccine?" Show me pro-vaccine rhetoric that you classify as bullsh!t and then I'll go ahead and try to side with these poor, scared individuals who just wanna not be bullied awwww. You're terrified of signing an emergency waiver? Hope you don't go to fvcking disney world, dog. Read that ticket, if you fly off of space mountain they've got themselves covered. Oopsies happen, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing your fvcking DUTY TO SOCIETY in getting the vaccine and keeping yourself and others safe. Gambling on your health and the health of those around you because you "don't know what's in the vaccine hurrrrrrrr de durrrr" makes my goddamned blood boil. A cousin of my coworker is a tragic example of that. She was pregnant. She read online that 8 miscarriages happen every year because of a fender-bender causing a strong tightening of the seatbelt during a collision, causing fetal termination. Horrible. So, she decided she wouldn't wear a seatbelt any more so that wouldn't happen! She died after a three-car collision that ejected her through the windsheild of her car. Nobody else on the scene even needed medical attention. Some people go so far to make these decisions that they assume are better for themselves that they don't listen to the thousands of healthcare professionals telling them just exactly HOW to make smarter choices. You've gotta spare me the sanctimonious "be kind to these people!!!!!! they're scared of you!!!" nonsense. They're active detriments to society, and several months worth of "just get the vaccine. it keeps you and those around you safe" OBVIOUSLY didn't get the point through to them. In 5 weeks my wife will be giving birth to my first child, a little boy named Lucas. I have not been allowed to be involved in any step of the process. Appointments? Mom only. First heartbeat? Mom only. Gender reveal? Mom only. First imaging? Mom only. to make it even better, I was just told last week that -- due to the obscene number of outbreaks in my state --I will not be able to be in the hospital. While the biggest moment of my life happens, I will be outside in the parking lot like I'm tailgating a fvckin football game. Do you know who's fault that is? I do. And they can go fvck themselves.

  18. Finally got around to listening to the Daneyko spittin chiclets interview and my god, you should all go listen. He is a wind up toy with talking though. Usually the hosts ask several questions and steer the interview. He just talked uninterrupted for like 2 hours. Went all over the place with his stories. My biggest takeaway is that I’ll be way easier on him with how he commentates. Because, holy sh!t guys, there is not a single person on this planet who likes the Devils more than Dano. He is just so, so, so endlessly proud to represent our organization. It’s beautiful to hear.

  26. Some updates: Case McCarthy played for BU as the beat Northeastern 1-0 in the Beanpot final. He had no points in the game but played on the first line that managed a shutout. Patrick Moynihan had an assist as Providence fell 3-2 to Umass Lowel. Vid below: We have already talked about Luke being Luke. Here is his empty Netter: He is a bit fortunate as he gets beaten on the wall and then is out of position, but his skating ability means he can recover. And the fact he never stops moving his feet means he is there as the puck comes out to relieve pressure. The record breaker: Ethan Edwards was also involved with the game on the first pairing he finished the night with zero points and a -1 rating.

  27. Thanks for this, its way too easy when everything is going wrong on the team to just focus on the results. You forget that at the end of the day these are people trying their best. Lindy is probably losing more sleep than us over the way the team is playing. He is just a guy at the end of the day trying to do his job and dealing with life at the same time. Whatever happens going forward I hope he is treated with respect and his situation is handled with some class, because he has always come across as a good guy.

  29. I’m usually a voice of reason but this is a bad take. That’s the literal point of a message board: to commiserate (or In the rare instance celebrate) together. We’re literally watching ineptitude at incredible levels and can see clear as day this staff is done and how they’re affecting the youth.

  30. One thing I really liked though, when the clock was ticking down with 18 seconds left, Severson is doing his “la dee dah oh well another loss” lazy skate and Jack is banging his stick for the puck, taking it into the zone and trying to set up Zacha for a shot. No quit in Hughes. He wants to win so bad.

  36. Don’t care if I piss some of you all off or not but here goes my 2 cents since I’ve been 98.9% silent on the COVID discussion cause I’m honestly sick of everyone’s bullsh!t. That literally goes The vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. My huge issue is the extremist stances some people are taking. You want to be upset that so and so didn’t get the shot? Sure, I get it. You want to be upset you’re being essentially forced to get a shot? I also understand that. But the issue needs to be discussed, ESPECIALLY if they’re undecided. Just cause YOU are steadfast on your views doesn’t mean they’re any less ignorant or “uneducated” than YOU are. With how much bullsh!t we all are being fed from all angles, it’s 100% realistic to think another person can be confused or straight up scared. It doesn’t make them any less of a person. But since we’re in absolutely dogsh!t time of society, the basic concept of having a conversation with someone you don’t agree with is long gone and now we live in the world of hard stances and vitriol. Empathy is a concept a ton of people have waived bye bye to. Am I vaccinated? Yep. Was I scared about it cause I didn’t trust having to sign emergency waivers absolving a major pharmaceutical corporation of any oopses? Bet your goddamn ass I was. As with any vaccine, there’s also the possibility of extreme adverse reactions to it by an extremely small number, only in this instance, those were highlighted ten-fold. Personal experience: Conversations are what caused about 50+ Undecided individuals to change their minds to get the shot out of 536 who did get it. Now, only 3 remain in the “no” category. It wasn’t hate, it wasn’t mockery or degradation of them as a human, it was “tell me why you’re against it or why you’re frightened” and then “here’s the facts and what we know” and it wasn’t the media, it was the conversation with the facts. the more and more angry this site seemingly becomes, the more I find myself checking less and less. I love it here, I love the people and the DISCUSSIONS or even debates we have, I make sure each time I order stuff from Amazon I use the referral link cause I can’t always chip in like I’d love to to keep this place running. But the more and more times we go off the rails into this hate circle, I fear we approach the levels of Reddit/Twitter/ or even worse, Facebook. End. Rant.
