  1. I'm going to end this season with a haiku, if you guy's don't mind. It started off great, Coronavirus said wait, Lotto here we come.

  4. I haven't posted here in a long time but something about tonight makes me want to. Maybe it's the return of Devils hockey. Brutal first period but they got it together in period 2 - they're going to give some teams trouble with all that speed. Sharangovich drawing 3 penalties, pretty great, him being drilled into the boards, not so great. Thought there were some nice moments for Kuokkanen and Boqvist. And obviously if Blackwood isn't as incredible as he was, we're talking about a lot of different stuff.

  5. How badly did we crush the 2018 draft coming out with Ty Smith and Sharangovich considering we went into it with the 17th overall and then nothing until the 4th round? It kind of makes up for pissing away our 2nd on Grabner (which made sense at the time)

  7. So my cousin played juniors. Never big enough to make it to the show, but he has a ton of friends all around the sport. I was hanging with him at Christmas, and he had something to say that I thought would be interesting to you guys. One of his best friends played on Dawson Mercer’s former team in the Q. He said he was an 18 year old, Dawson was a 16 year old. By midseason, Dawson was the leader of the team. Not only was he everyone’s best friend, but he commanded everyone’s respect. My cousin said you have no idea how hard it is for a 16 year old to earn an 18 year old’s respect like that, but Dawson did. His friend said Dawson isn’t just a future NHL top-line player. He’s a future NHL captain.

  8. Ruff currently doing a zoom call w/ STH's. Q&A. I asked several (had to submit before hand). Are you prepared to have patience with some of the younger players on the team to give them a real chance. Are you willing to perhaps lose a regular season game because Jack Hughes is getting outplayed by the other team’s line on a given night, but still keep him with skilled players as opposed to burying him and not giving him the learning experience while moving a veteran like Travis Zajac up simply because it’s the “safer coaching decision”. Will other younger players who still need a fair shot to truly evaluate their talent have to “earn your trust” for consistent minutes or be given any chance to fail for later success (young defensemen like Ty Smith come to mind in this example)? RUFF: Yes - with a team like this, there will have to be ample amounts of patience. For these players, they'll have to have trust that they can make a mistake or two and be able to get back out there and not be afraid. Now, if they repeat the mistake several times, then there have to be consequences like missing a shift or maybe even a period. How do you view the analytics department the Devils have formed? How often would you expect to act on information they provide? Are you looking at it more as a tool for you to use or as a true collaborative partner that could perhaps shape larger decisions. How much do you feel you’ll coach on instinct and how much data and outside counsel do you expect will go into your decisions? Would you envision getting some piece of data from the analytics department during an intermission that you might be able to take advantage of to use later in the game? RUFF: I'm excited to work with the analytics dept. They can really help you in areas like zone entries and exits but you have to know that things like turnovers can be part of that. With that said, the eye test is still something that can't be ignored. Other points: Make the ice smaller - play that way, not actually physically. Take away time and space. Play as a 5 man unit. Looks at forward lines as pairs. Defensive pairings work best when they can be consistent. Push the pace and pressure in the offensive zone. Naming a captain sounds like it will come more from Fitz than Lindy due to familiarity. Notes that its important to see if the player you want to give it to is ready for it (read Nico). Biggest strength of the team right now is Blackwood. Young talent a close second. Someone asked how you can improve OT results. Lindy, understanding the nature of 3 on 3, says that a lot of it is luck and how you can use possession and capitalize on your shots. Basically - win the faceoff and then outchange your opponents.

  9. Alright. Today is my birthday. Now I don’t ask much of this stupid idiot team.... I know better. However...... would it be TOO MUCH to ask for..... A WIN AT HOME (What?! Did you forget that was a thing that used to happen?! I know, crazy to think that the last time the Devils won a home game was back before things like the Super Bowl, Presidents Day, and the entire month of February!) against the fvcking trash-ass Sabres?! Whaddya think boys?! Think you can handle beating this trainwreck of a sh!tshow of a team in our home barn?! Because not losing the 11th straight game at home- to the only team in the league more dogsh!t than us- is all I ask for my birthday this year. LGD.

  11. This will probably get buried but I'm an architect and I helped design Hank's apartment a few years ago. The nicest dude you've ever met, but there's this one story that always sticks with me. We're in his kitchen with his wife Therese and he comes home from practice. He's wildly attractive btw, but that's unrelated. So we're mid conversation and he's kinda pawing at his shirt a little bit all awkward, he's in obvious discomfort. "Go ahead", his wife says to him. He smiles and nods and says "excuse me" and heads over to the kitchen sink. At this point I'm watching him like a hawk because WTF was that whole interaction. Without even a blink he awkwardly cups his hands under the sink and goes to town on the sink water. He's slurping it out of his hands legitimately like a dog slurping water from a bowl. It is bizarre and uncomfortable to watch. I look over at his wife, who's blushing slightly. "Sorry", she says to me and my boss. "Whenever he gets home from practice he is so, so thirsty..." She pauses for a second as she can see our visible confusion. "And, you know... he has no cups."

  12. Tonight, I walked off of my plane for the last time. I’ll be honest with everyone, it’s been a brutal last few days knowing I won’t fly with 95% of these people again and more than likely won’t do what I’ve been doing for the last 6 years anymore. While it is nearly 100% by choice, it still doesn’t make it any easier. This thread has been my annual way to remind people to look out for one another, but as I walk away from the home I’ve known for the better part of a decade, I felt a bump was in order, since this place was what drove me to do so in the first place. We had a handful of friends over this past weekend, cracked open some good drinks and cigars and shared stories. So I’m in a good place, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I looked like a Mark Messier going away ceremony... Stay healthy my friends, be excellent to each other and (eventually) Lets go Devils!!! -Jag

  15. Subban is quietly having a nice bounce back season. He’s obviously not ever going to get back to Norris Trophy winner form, but he’s having more good games than bad this year, imo.

  17. Left at 4-1, simply couldn’t take it anymore and knew that they were toast. It was weird at first (and a little depressing), but the cardboard cutouts do help the seats feel more populated. The tarps do take you out of things just a little. Food choices are very limited, and the quality is definitely diminished. Not sure if we’ll go again, but my issue is really the on-ice product at the moment. They’re quickly becoming an infuriating and unwatchable bunch. Palms is still getting his share of good chances, but the real problem I see with him at the moment is that he’s really become a serious momentum killer. It’s either a bad penalty, a bad pass...but he just has a way of making a mistake that knocks over the dominos that eventually lead to a goal against. The chances he’s getting will eventually go in, but for now, I can understand why fans are frustrated with him. Sometimes it feels like this organization has really become a little too comfortable with losing and waiting until next year. Probably just my anger talking.

  23. I just looked it up and Rango started this season on Sept 5th with Minsk, played 34 games (17g for 25pts), joined the Devils, got COVID, and turned it up during an insanely compressed schedule. Calder aside, that's pretty fvcking cool.

  24. For all who missed the game. Holtz is very dangerous in his little and big things. He is definitely need in good two way center and good clutcher\rebounder. btw Thompson looks impressive, but he has a lot to work on.

  37. Back in 2009, when I had season tickets, the Devils has this goofy little area setup right at the top of the escalators of the north entrance tower (now i think it’s a liquor bar or something?) where they’d have stuff to do at intermission. Sometimes it was videogames, usually there was table hockey. Well this one time there was a fake play-by-play booth. There was a green screen behind you and you did color commentary for “Doc”, who was recorded, and you had lines you could read or you could improvise. Doc’s lines would also show up on the screen so you’d know what to say. I was pumped. I was a teenager ready to show my hockey knowledge so I made sure to be the first in line, right as we got in the building. As I start to riff and talk about why the Devils really need Langenbrunner to pick up his scoring and why I thought Sutter was going to be a hall of fame coach for us, fvcking Doc walks up. Says something like “let’s see what this is all about”, plops down next to me and asks them to start it from the beginning. We have a great little banter, he tells everyone watching that I’m a “natural” and I basically pass out because of how happy I am. Cherry on top; he mentions it to Chico on air after the second intermission about how he “found chico’s replacement, a young man from Monmouth county with a knack for talking Devils’ hockey.” My mom recorded it and we have it on a DVD somewhere lol. Will always adore Doc.

  38. This may sound selfish, but it means as much to me as it does to you. May be more but in absolutely other way. I rooted for the team for a very long time with the help of small newspaper articles. Sometimes it turned out to meet games on TV if I was lucky(there worked Russian commentators and they didn’t do well) or when we met parents friends in their house, they had Sputnik tv, where I watched my first games on english. I finally got the Internet, the first thing I did, besides porn, was watching devils games live. His voice was the first, he was like a father who told stories. admittedly, he was a great storyteller. thanks, Doc, for magic of my memories. And good luck.
