  1. I'm questioning sitting Mueller, bringing up Tennyson, and playing him. R-R pairs don't typically work. This is a known thing - the analytics department of the Devils certainly knows it. The roster construction, I understand somewhat just because they carved out a spot for Smith and he couldn't take it.
  2. Two questions about today - I don't understand going with 5 RHD. I get that Mueller sucks. I get that Smith couldn't play here and I get that Greene is hurt and I get that the organization really doesn't have NHL worthy LHD who are in the minors. They have Joe Morrow, who is a 7th D at best, and Colton White, who is probably worse than that. But these right-handed D being asked to play the left side don't know what they're doing there. Goal #1 happens because Severson gets out of position and no one picks up Huberdeau. That's not to say it doesn't happen with an LHD but it's less likely to happen. Goal #3 happens with Carrick not being able to stop Connolly - he neither blocks the shot nor disrupts Connolly's stick position. I don't remember the other question. It may well be time to fire Hynes because the players don't seem to be doing the smaller things that help teams win. If Palmieri manages to get that puck deep at the end of the 2nd, it probably ends 4-2 and then at least there's a cushion there. He doesn't and they don't.

The Devils finished out the 2016-17 season losing 19 of 21 and made the playoffs the next year. If you want an in season example, the Devils lost 10 of 12 in 2017-18 and they went on to win 19 of the next 33.

It's not, no, it's just about how your grip on the facts is always, at best, tenuous. They dominated the Edmonton game. Just saying stuff about 'losers' isn't enough. The team could easily be 2-3-0. The 2012 Devils, a team a lot of people like to go back to, had 3 regulation wins in their first 16 games. They just managed to win 4 shootouts and pick up 4 points in extra time besides. Any team can have a 900 PDO stretch over 5 games, and if this was just during the season, people would be upset but it wouldn't lead people to freak out.

Again, you're just wrong. They dominated the Edmonton game. They significantly outplayed Edmonton and were never behind in that game.

Hynes's coaching strategy does not call for low percentage shots. I don't know where that idea would even come from.

Absolutely nobody can win with a team shooting 6% and goalies saving 85% of their shots. A panic coaching change isn't going to save the season. That's not to say they shouldn't change coaches, but they should give it more than 5 games, especially when the last 2 were 2 of the 3 team's best.

Teams go 0-2-2 all the time. The worst penalty kill in the league is successful 3 in 4 times and the worst power play is usually successful around 1 in 7. These things will turn around - if they can maintain what they did at even strength tonight, they're going to win games. If they can't, they won't win many games and it'll be time for Hynes to go.

I thought you stopped watching the games - well tonight's was actually really good, the Devils played very well, and if they continue to play that way, they'll win plenty of games. If they lose like Wednesday consistently, yeah, that's the coach's fault. But I don't expect that to happen.

The funny part is that if Hynes put Boyle out there, a guy who has historically been way worse on the PK, no one would've said anything. Rooney is a fine penalty killer. He's garbage 5 on 5. His record as a penalty killer is quite good.
  11. Zacha is not an excellent defensive forward. He's great on the PK. Big difference between the two.
  12. They deserved the 2 points. Refs took one away and they couldn't pull it back in the 3 on 3. Outplayed them by a large amount in the 3rd period and just couldn't put it away. But they looked like a hockey team here which was a big change from Wednesday.
  13. Pavel Zacha played 4 games in Binghamton last season.
  14. Zacha's not being blamed for the loss, the other guys haven't played in 2 weeks. Once there's some injuries, Zacha will be in there every night. He really has not been jerked around the lineup very much as a Devil - he's been in there when he's healthy almost all the time.
  15. Friedman reported the Devils' interest in Pysyk in his most recent 31 Thoughts column.

Exactly. Natural Stat Trick has him with the second highest xG on the team and credits him with 4 individual high danger scoring chances, the highest on the team at ES. Some of those will start to go in.

This is how he's going to be most effective. He did set someone up nicely in Game 1, I think, but charging at the net is going to be way better for him than passing. He's the 4th line LW.

Wood has been fine. I don't know what you guys want to see out of him. He's gotten scoring chances. He took a dumb penalty but he's also drawn one. He'll score if he keeps getting chances like he's getting. He's the 4th line left wing.

Rooney hasn't played a game in two weeks. If Zacha is the one who sits, I don't think Zacha is being punished - I think he's trying to keep everyone fresh and Zacha is the guy who comes out. He'll probably go back in on Thursday.

Yes, everyone is putting up a false argument except you - you're the only person with true beliefs. If only you knew how ridiculous that sounds! But you can't. It's not possible to know how dumb that sounds. It just has to be that everyone else is faking to try to sound smart. There are usually several teams who exceed expectation and several who fall well short, and given those things, we should expect each team to return closer to what we expected. Obviously there's large mitigating factors here, but in the case of the Islanders, I don't see them - they didn't have a breakout superstar (at least not one that they kept). Looking up the concept of regression towards the mean might help you understand this - the idea that, given an inordinate result, the next result is likely to be closer to average. The Islanders have won one (1) game so far this year. They're 1-1-0. Crushing it so far.

Buffalo embarrassed Pittsburgh on opening night. It's possible that Buffalo is good this year. I'm not counting on it but early returns are pretty good. As for all this 2010 nonsense - the Devils went 9-21-1 from this point. If you want to bet that this team will go 9-21-1 or worse from this point, I will be very glad to do so at even money. Things will go better.

You're right, Game 1 is not the time to experiment. A game earlier in the season would be better. The Devils did not play particularly well to go up 4-0. Two lucky bounces on net front plays, a point shot, and a highlight-reel individual effort goal. This was far from domination. They didn't play particularly poorly when they gave up 4 straight, either.

Mueller is a good defensive player though. If you don't need more goals, Mueller's worst attributes are neutralized. He plays solid in-zone defense. Zajac ended up playing 19 minutes and Nico 20 minutes. I wouldn't want these guys to get significantly more. The Devils can't just run with 2 centers down the stretch of games. 'The feel of the game' is post-facto stuff - most of the time the Devils win this game. They didn't even play particularly poorly in the 3rd period. It's not like Winnipeg dominated that period and the Devils went into a huge shell - they had chances to score a 5th goal.

What you're suggesting in the broader strokes means coaching every game like it's the last game of the season. Granted I had put on the Yankees when it went to 4-0 and didn't come back to the game until Schneider was out, but Mueller's exactly the guy you want to play when you're ahead 2 goals in the 3rd period. If you can't play Mueller in that spot, he shouldn't be playing at all - he's terrible offensively but he's one of the best defensive players on the team. Yeah, Hughes is weak defensively right now, but he's going to have to get better at this - the Devils have the luxury now of benching him in games where they have leads, but how long will that last? If he's going to sit in those spots, at least let him earn that seat first. The team has a lot of new players and they've played 0 regular season games before tonight. There's going to be a period of evaluation, and there should be.
  25. Bringing up 2010-11 is ridiculous. Just absolutely ridiculous. Not the way this works, folks.
