I understand your point, it's a philosophical difference on team construction. But my belief has always been if you can't sign them to bigger bucks with mid term... or a discount for the later years - you trade them. It sucks. But your team won't be getting better in 5 years, it will be getting considerably worse as the contract ages with little relief. Never let them walk away for free unless you really think you'll win the cup with the team you have. I've been clamoring for this since before Scotty Gomez left us.

I never blame the player for taking what the market will give them. As a GM though, I would much rather sign players early at a 30%-50%+ discount - risking I am overpaying them - than being saddled with giant UFA contracts where I paying a 30-50%+ premium over what they should be paid for what they can do going forward. I get you can't let Draisaitl (and McDavid) get to their last year unsigned - but I wouldn't commit the term pushing them that late. Unpopular as it may be, I would hold the line and explore alternatives. It's a business.

It's win now mode... there is no tomorrow. Draisaitl is 28 now, 29 in his October. This contract wont kick in until he is 30, and you're paying him 14mm through 38? He's being paid for what he has done, not what he will do. They need to win now... or they never will with him.

Fitzy talked highly of Casey, and that he has no problem “overcooking” him in the AHL until he and the team are ready. I get the sense he’s hoping to use him for cap flexibility in 2026-27 also disappointed he couldn’t slide Nemec a year because of Hamilton’s injury / and his superb play filling in.

Biggest takeaway from the presser for me was about the 10OA. All the potential offers were 10OA+asset for X and he didn’t like them over getting another great prospect with how the draft played out. Fitzy liked the “6’7 D” (Silayev) but seemed like he was kinda leaning toward the “Finnish center” Konsta Helenius (went to Buffalo at 14), but Dan MacKinnon was absolutely for Silayev

It’s still nice to see ownership not afraid to pay up with that cash up front. That hasn’t always been the case for this franchise and I just wanted to note my appreciation for it now.

Wasn’t thrilled with Markstrom… but… all the details work for me. I didn’t want to give up our 2024 pick for him, I didn’t want to give up Casey or Holtz for him, and I worry about cap hit. Fitz instead sends our 32nd OA and Bahl to Calgary for 2 years of Markstrom with Schmid/Daws developing behind him.

Goaltending is so fickle. We should absolutely go out and find an established veteran goalie, but I really don't want to sell the farm with multiple high picks and prospects to try to catch a hot goaltender. I believe Holtz ceiling is a defensive liability, 35ish goal scoring winger... bench him on the PK, but have him out there early to score the first goal. It is possible for the Devils to score first. I've seen it. And obviously, when we're down by a goal. Depending on the offer, of course, he can be traded. He isn't untouchable. But I would prefer to send a pick out instead of him.
