Only four more of these left to play.  Devils have obviously been toast for weeks, but once the Metro3 and WC2 slots are filled by teams with 88 points or more, that's officially (mercifully) it.

If any of you see a bald guy wearing a red Bratt jersey (it's a pre-Adidas, as it's from his first Development Camp) riding the Zamboni before the third period...yep, that will be me.  A bud of mine's wife won tix and the Zamboni ride for two, and since she has less than zero interest in hockey, we're going.  Think I'm more interested in that than the game itself.

Oh well, guess I'd love to see Bratt reach 80 points (he'll occasionally look disengaged but he looks like a guy who as long as he's healthy will put up 70-80 points by season's end in his prime years).  Maybe Jack can reach 80 as well, if he's not sat down early.

BTW Nico has 179 points over his last 179 GP...70 G and 109 A (or 32 G and 50 A per 82 GP).  And he's a fine 200 ft player and he plays tough minutes, and this was about what his top end was projected to be coming out of the draft; 1OAs can't ALL be 100+ point dynamic types.  He's a fine player and a great Devil.  Just hope that his prime years aren't wasted here.

I've sung my praises about Nico aplenty but Bratt certainly deserves a ton of credit for the incredible year he's having as well. He has the same amount of five-on-five primary assists as Nathan MacKinnon (24). The only players with more? Connor McDavid (31) and Nikita Kucherov (25). Those are your 3 MVP favorites right there... great company. He's also 11th in total points at five-on-five, plus he's an excellent play/possession driver (59% on-ice goal share, 58% expected goal share).

  2. Pretty evident Meier wasn't a fan of Ruff. Green unlocking Meier is the only thing worthwhile he'll have accomplished here; hopefully Timo can build off of it for next season under the new coaching regime.

Shootouts detract from the team concept on which hockey is based.  After 65 minutes of mostly 5-on-5 and then 3-on-3 play, the game is supposed to be decided by 1-on-1 theatrics?  Give me a break.  Just because a shootout was the climax of D2: The Mighty Ducks doesn’t mean it works in real life.

It was fun for like the first year or two (or maybe I just thought that because Viktor Kozlov was automatic and the Devils were good at them LOL) but after that... bleh.

I'm all for extending 3-on-3 to 10 mins.  I think that would REALLY reduce the number of shootouts.

I'm fine with ties coming back, but I doubt we ever see them again.

I'll keep hoping for a 3-2-1-0 point format, so we can stop having some games being worth two points and other ones worth three.  Would also be nice to see a regulation win mean more than OT/SO wins...and also for loser points to be worth that much less in the grand scheme.

I don't remember what podcast I heard it on, but I also wouldn't mind some funky rule in the 3v3 like once you enter the opponent's blue line you can't retreat back past the redline. Even though I like the 3v3, the possession hogging/stalling game gets ridiculous sometimes.

Fully agreed on the 3-2-1 point format, though... yet another good rule the PWHL has implemented (in addition to Gold Plan for draft order).

We need a George Washington type guy who can play the role of Commander.

I wish Pat Burns was still around. My all-time favorite Devils' coach. He'd be a perfect fit for this group IMO.

Agreed.  Nico’s more or less having the same type of season this year as he did last year.  His eleven-game absence has cut into his cumulative stats, but his pace and per-game averages are just about the same today as they were a season ago, and they could be even better next season if he has a chance to play with Timo from Day 1.

Nico has also done this while playing the toughest minutes on the team. According to PuckIQ, he leads Devils' forwards in percent of ice-time against "elite" competition (39%). He also leads the team in defensive zone starts at five-on-five (169).

Jack, by comparison, plays a far more sheltered role: 32% ice-time against elite competition, 8th among Devils' forwards, and just 67 defensive zone starts (10th among Devils' forwards).

  7. After last night's loss, we need more than a -1000 MacD/Rempe fight (I don't know the actual odds if they exist, but, come on). The season is over. Send a message for next year. I don't care if the Devils lose 10-0, fvck these dickheads up. The Devils' teams that won Cups would NEVER accept this garbage, different era or not. Fitz should sign Turner Stevenson, Cam Janssen and Jim McKenzie to one-day contracts just to play in this game.

  8. At this point it's better to scoreboard watch for draft lottery purposes instead of playoffs... I think best case scenario the Devils can climb (fall?) their way to 8th. Buffalo won last night (good) but Calgary lost (bad).

    Tonight's rooting interest(s): Go Kraken.

Hoping MacD is good to go for tonight. There has to be major penalties tonight. Bottom 6 players should expect the most shifts they’ve seen all year. I don’t want to see Jack out there unless it’s a PP.

Oh I'm sure he'll play... this is literally the point he's even on an NHL roster. He'll make it out there on one leg if needed to.

That gif is hilarious. Kid shoves his TV remote up his ass.

LOL I was going to say that gif was missing the funniest part of the original video. 😄

Green's total incompetency shows in pairing Luke and Smith again last night. They have been downright AWFUL in 200+ minutes together at 5v5:

    Scoring chances (for-against): 66-98
    High danger shot attempts: 18-41
    Expected goal share: 38%
    Goals: 2-14

    Can't make it up.

  11. Devils with Brendan Smith on the ice last night (5v5):

    Shot attempts: 8-21

    Scoring chances: 2-11

    Goals: 0-1

It's amazing how Holtz continues to be the whipping boy yet Smith skates by like the golden child despite terrible play. He brings down anyone he plays with... we saw it with Nemec and now here we go again with Luke.

It’s still 10 as of this morning, but the Devils are now behind the Penguins in the standings.  Make it stop.

I'd say keep it going. This team clearly isn't going to the playoffs, but even if they did, it's a quick 1st round bounce with Travis Green likely back as HC next year. Do we want that? Houdini for Celebrini.

  13. Graeme Clarke has a goal and assist for Utica today (yes, they're playing this morning LOL) .. he's up to 47 points in 62 games after potting 58 points in 68 games last season. What is it going to take to give him a look? The current iteration of our 4th line is awful - you can't convince me guys like MacDermid, Willman, Tierney, etc. should be playing over Clarke.

Even Brian Halonen deserves a chance... what's wrong with playing he and Clarke, centered by Lazar, on the 4th line right now?

  14. On the subject of high cap hit veteran goalies... MAJOR no thanks to John Gibson. $6.4M AAV over three more years and his last good season was... 5 years ago. Maybe it's the name value but I can never understand why he's ever brought up as a potential solution. Since that last good year (2018-19), he ranks 2nd worst by GSAA and 21st worst by GSAx.

  15. Binnington has been amazing for the Blues this year, really the only reason they're sniffing the playoffs and probably deserving of the Vezina if Hellybuyck didn't exist, but definitely a guy I wouldn't want to be buying HIGH on. Over the prior two seasons he ranked 10th worst by goals saved above expected, 3rd worst by goals saved above average. He has a MUCH better resume, in fairness, but just look at Ottawa's mistake in buying high on Korpisalo after one good season following some pretty awful ones.

I swear, when it comes to goalies these days…

Talk about bad goalie deals... what the hell was Ottawa thinking signing Korpisalo to that contract last summer?

  18. Why can't the Devils bring up Clarke? Willman scored the another night, great, but he's still getting out-chanced 70% of the time on-ice at 5v5. Tierney (10 pts in 43 games and below break-even by goals, expected goals, scoring chances, shot attempts) hasn't been much better.
