Have you ever felt this blah about an upcoming NFL season?
  2. My short rant: one of the stupidest intellectual developments in recent years has been putting a percentage chance of how a one-time event will turn out. Examples, "My super secret algorithim says there's a 40% chance Mr. Jones will win the upcoming election" or like here "there's a 30% chance that Taylor Hall will re-sign with the Devils." I predict with a 99% certainty that extraterrestrials will land in the middle of Time Square tomorrow. When it doesn't happen, I'll say I never said it was certainty.

Daneyko was never a great player and more or less played no role in the third cup. His number is retired because of what he meant to the franchise and is deserved on that basis. Luongo is a bit of column A and bit of column B.

It’s a bit borderline, but I think deserved, akin to the Devils retiring Daneyko’s number. It would be one thing if out of nowhere they decided to retire Ed Jovanovski’s number just to sell some tickets and create an artificial buzz like the Rangers do when they retire numbers of players who retired more than 30 years ago. But Luongo is a Hall of Famer who spent roughly half his career in Florida who also has a connection to the area and to the franchise that’s more significant than a great player who played some games there.
  5. They said he might just take his qualifying offer, although that might change if he has a great stretch run.
  6. They’ve pretty much crushed everyone in the division this year, including the Rays who usually give them trouble. The thinking is that they don’t stand a chance against the Astros in the playoffs, but I’m not sure that’s really true.
  7. Whatever the case, I wouldn’t get cute and try to do all that side wheeling a dealing. Just protect your best players and let the chips fall where they may.
  8. Among Yankee fans, you hear “this will be the worst 105 win team ever.” As to the Mets, I hope they don’t have posterboards where they take a section of clothing off the Wilpons for every win because that would be disgusting, even if it helps them win the World Series.
  9. Apparently BVW said that if the Yankees wanted Stroman, they had to give up Florial and Deivi Garcia, which is a pretty insane ask. I get that the Mets don't want to trade someone like Syndergaard or DeGrom to the Yankees, but pretty silly to hold out over making the team better in the long run for someone they got a few days ago for a can of magic beans. Like, BVW is just being an a$$hole to the fans if he wouldn't just take Clint Frazier and something else.
  10. You're right that it's something that gives you pause that he's a sure thing, and what the Devils gave up to get him and the contract they signed him to indicate they understand he's not a sure thing. However. the difference is that the Gusev and Vegas were much less familiar with one another than Colorado was with Makar. The way I see it, Gusev could be found money, but I would still be looking to improve the team if there's a move out there to be made.
  11. Vegas's big obstacle to keeping him was their cap situation. My guess is that he didn't play in the playoffs last year because he joined the team right when they started, and unlike guys like Kreider and Makar didn't participate in the team's development camp and was not ready to jump right in to a playoff series and deal with the smaller ice. I agree though that people should be a bit skeptical that he'll be an immediate 60 point player, or something like that.

If it’s true that Winnipeg is disillusioned with him primarily because of some supposed lack of a two way game, a deal that centers on Bratt and a first next year probably gets it done.

Put Laine on one of those top two lines. That would be something.
  14. Yes, but want to see how things play out with Hall.
  15. The defense overall is adequate and you don’t need a stacked group like Nashville to win. On the other hand, you can’t have too many players who are capable of scoring goals.

Looks like Butcher just got married this weekend, which would explain why there hasn't been much movement there to date. Also, it would be strange for him to be the team representative at Hughes' press conference only to have to go to arbitration a contract, which often means you're getting traded.

I would not do anything beyond two years and nothing more money-wise than something you can get rid of without much thought. And Shattenkirk's availability should not influence trading Vatanen one way or the other. He's got bad knees and was at times a healthy scratch on a bad Rangers team, and it wasn't like he was Drew Doughty not too long ago. He will not be apprciably better on the power play than Vatanen or Severson, who will be very limited there anyway so long as Subban is healthy. We dodged a bullet not signing him.
  18. It seems like the idea is for them to be the only seller.

How’s about this for a trade proposal. Miles Wood to Rangers for Chris Kreider, Namestikov and 2020 second rounder. We’d be bailing them out of their cap issues, but at a steep price.

Zacha would be betting against otherwise not being an NHL player by the time he's 29. He's been a disappointment thus far, for sure, but he should be at least an average NHL player for ten years. So it wouldn't be crazy for him to turn it down. Ray would want to do it if he thinks Zacha has something like 40-50 point/two-way play upside, which is a strong possibility if you put him on Hughes' wing. His career arc, going back to junior is pretty similar to Ryan Johnanson, who got traded for Seth f'n Jones and that was before you had to pay him $8 million a year. Now imagine how valuable a player like that is getting paid about 3% of the cap. On the other hand, if he's pretty much what he is now it's not the end of the world and it wouldn't be terrible to retain the maximum of his salary if we just needed to dump him. And of course, there's always the expansion draft route if necessary to get rid of him.

It's possible that teams have presented him with an offersheet and he said no or we'll see, although from what MacKenzie tweeted a few days ago it doesn't sound like he's gotten one. Speaking of the Sissons contract, would you take a chance and give the same thing to Zacha? I probably would.

As I recall, there were a few snippets from her during Scott's contract disputes with Lou. It didn't affect his play in New Jersey, but might have been an issue if it were a Canadian team.

The advantage of being in New Jersey is that there will basically be no one talking about whatever his dad might be saying, the same way Scott Niedermayer's mom would have been a constant topic of conversation had he played in Toronto, but was maybe mentioned a handful of times over the years in Rich Chere's columns. Even in Philly, where they actually talk about hockey on sports talk radio a lot, Lindros's parents weren't that much of an issue.

The point is that you set things up so that you have him for seven years or even longer, but you stagger the cap hit so it’s more manageable in 3 years when it really needs to be. You can’t agree to it ahead of time, and there’s no honor among thieves, so you have the ability to trade him at the end of the three years or get four picks if the plan doesn’t work.
