    You'll never win with Schneider

Could be the first time in sports message board history where a hysterical thread title ended up being literally true.

GDT: Carolina at Devils at 3pm 2/10 - MSG

If he goes on a nice point streak over the next ten days, he very well could bring back a first rounder. What will really help is the Rangers making a playoff push, as that would take Hayes and Zuccarello off the market.

I wouldn’t give him away like Edmonton did with Maroon at the last minute of the trade deadline, as much as I want to do our best to land Hughes or Kakko. Having a better shot at keeping him around for another year or two is better than a can of magic beans draft pick.

Really have no issue with the roster moves at this point. Finishing where we are right now gives us a really good shot at getting a forward that will make an impact immediately. The Gryba’s of the world help us get there.

Could have sworn he was. Oh well, so I guess ending up with Hughes is where the scenario makes sense.

If the Devils end up with one of the top two picks, Zajac becomes expendable pretty much immediately. Obviously they can't count on that until it happens so a deadline deal involving him isn't likely. However, an ACL tear at this time of the year for someone Koivu's age makes it likely that he won't be back at least until December. So that's a deal that could make sense even in the offseason. My guess is that the team is hoping Zacha turns into Zajac's replacement and that sees the poor showing he's had thus far to be something of a blessing in disguise. Barring some amazing hot streak to finish the season, you can probably sign Zacha to a new deal that is very similar to what Miles Wood is getting. If he turns into remotely the player the Devils hoped he was going to be, that becomes an amazing value, especially if Ray decides it's time to really go after a big money free agent.

So Mikko Koivu out for the season. Not crazy to think Zajac could be a nice fit there. He’s better than Koivu at this point, he’s from around there and could rekindle some magic with Parise. His contract is also pretty manageable at this point.

GDT: Kings @ Devils 7:00 PM MSG+ Boo Kovy Editon

The way things are looking now, he’ll have a real opportunity to do so at the trade deadline, the draft and more importantly free agency. Free agent forwards will likely include: Duchene, Stone, Panarin and Skinner. Not all of them are possibilities of course, but this is the offseason he has to stop pansy footing around with the cap space he keeps telling us about. As nose Vermeil said of Larry Johnson, it’s time for Ray to take off the diapers. As for tonight, I can live with it. Getting one of those top two picks by gaining ground on LA so far as lottery odds are concerned is worth Kovy scoring a meaningless goal on a goalie who likely will be playing elsewhere next year.

    2018 NFL Season

Since I'm a little anal when it comes to threads, I'll start one for the 2018 season, which I guess officially starts with free agency. Won't rehash everything we've already talked about, except that Jordy Nelson was released, and I imagine will end up on the Patriots because of course. The Pats are also reportedly trying to sign Suh. It' the Patriots' world, and we're just living in it.

Also one other thing about Kovalchuk. His leaving probably did help the team avoid bankruptcy and made the sale easier. I seem to recall reading that the amount of money he was owed did figure in discussions with at least one of the potential buyers, I think Barroway, which was a nice bullet we dodged.

Although the idea is for him not to be that effective this year. According to Mando, all of the serious candidates for the job were more or less told what the team is trying to do. And right now, Flores is giving every indication that he's on board saying "There will be some pain." Embrace the tank, and don't muck it up like the Jets almost did.

Would have liked it if he gave us a chance to trade his rights a couple of seasons ago, but pretty much this.

As the Patriots winning again has depressed me enough, here’s hope for the Devils long term fortunes (can’t single space on my iPad for some reason) Hall Nico Palmieri Panarin Hughes/kakko Bratt Boqvist Zacha Coleman Anderson Zajac McLeod extra forwards: Studenic, Talvitie Smith Severson Butcher Vatanen Mueller Santini/Walsh Blackwood Schneider Wood, Boyle, KK traded for awesome stuff we don’t know about. It’s eminently doable.

He’s a UFA after the season ends, and I don’t think trading or not trading him now makes it anymore likely he signs a new contract with us. So I guess the idea is not to give him away, but if he can get you something like a second rounder, you trade him.

I think something that could happen is the Devils first rounder (assuming it’s outside the top five) for Dougie Hamilton.

Not inconceivable that a pick gets traded for a good young player with term.

Not sure what the Sharks have to offer especially if Mojo's the one they really want. They don;t have first rounders for this year or next. And according to Capfriendly, the only second rounder they have this year is from Florida and it's conditional (I imagine on them making the playoffs, which likely isn't going to happen). They seem to have only two good prospects in Merkely and Norris, both of whom are probably too good for what the Devils have to offer.

I can't recall a single instance in the past ten years or more where a player had surgery during the season and the team did not make any announcement to that effect. At this point I"m wondering whether it's a concussion and the team is taking things really slowly.

Replay never gets limited in such a fashion. They always tell you that replay is only there to correct obviously missed calls, but as we all know, it isn't actually that way. If that were the case, you could do replay from the booth, and it should take all of 30 seconds to complete the review. And then can you imagine challenges for offensive holding calls, or even worse missed offensive holding calls. Soon these games are going to last five hours.

I was about the same age, and it wasn't until I saw the score of one of the playoff games against the Caps on the scoreboard at Yankee Stadium that I actually knew there was a New Jersey hockey team. My parents weren't really sports fans, and we didn't get Sportschannel which was a premium station at the time. Only MSG, so the only team I really knew about was the Rags, and they just kind of annoyed me.

Race To The Bottom II - 2018-19 Edition

I guess it could go the other way. Chiarelli reportedly put the Oilers first rounder on the table for a trade, which could have been a contributing factor to his dismissal. Ownership might not want to tank the rest of the season, but at the same time might not want to light a fire under anyone's ass to improve now, as that was the idea of bringing in Hitchcock.

I think Wade Phillips probably has a trick or two up his sleeve for Brady. As to the PI and PI generally, I've thought about basically going back to the old rules giving pass defenders more leeway and perhaps making it only a ten or fifteen yard penalty. When what is PI is more clearly defined, you'll probably get fewer missed calls as refs will be less inclined to use discretion to not call something blatant, sort of like you don't ever get a makeup offisdes or false start call. Perhaps in return, you go to the college rule of having one foot in bounds being a completed catch. But ultimately, so long as you have a rule book that more or less says there's a penalty on every single play (note every good offensive lineman says he holds on every play he just knows how to get away with it) the refs are going to look like they're enforcing things arbitrarily.

You hear that the Bruins want to go big game hunting in free agency, like maybe Stone or Duchene, or perhaps even Karlsson if they make it there. Seems like you have to move out Backes to do that.

Devils 2018-2019 news and notes thread

He's got a no movement clause, and he's signed for two more years after this at $6 AAV, but it seems like David Backes presents a pretty good opportunity for the Devils to use some of their cap space to acquire young assets since god knows we're not using it elsewhere except to try and sign Hall to an extension. Was thinking something like Greene and Boyle to Boston for Backes, Boston's 2019 first and maybe Brandon Carlo. Trading Greene makes it close to a wash next year, and you've only got that terrible $6 million cap hit for one more year after that.
