I wonder if a Garland for Zacha trade would make sense. Zacha needs a change of scenery.
Garland is one of the best 5-on-5 players in the league and is on a pretty sweet deal. A trade for Garland most likely starts with Severson +.

I just looked it up and the NHL trade deadline this season is March 21st. I guess we will have to wait another 7 weeks to see some sort of life from Ruff before he goes back into hibernation until the draft.
I wanted to blame Gillies for last night's loss as the goals against were brutal, but he is who he is and considering that and the opponent he did alright.
The three shots in the third period is unforgivable. I guess that's what happens when you have Zacha, Tatar, Kuokkanen, Sharangovich and Vesey as passengers most nights.
I agree he finished the game well and we aren’t winning any games only scoring one goal. With that being said, when’s the last time we’ve played a game where our goalie hasn’t given up at least one (often multiple) absolutely horrible goal? That has to be deflating for the team. They clearly don’t trust their goalies back there.
That obviously doesn’t excuse 3 shots in the 3rd, I’m just saying a game without giving up an absolute stinker would be greatly appreciated.

exactly my point. Its not a coincidence that so many goals are with guys completely left alone while our players are bunched like flies out of position
100%. The system is pretty dumb imo and we see many players look lost out there with positioning, it’s not intuitive at all.

This happens so much I wonder if this is some bastardized version of the system the coaches have in place. I mean, this can’t be what the coaches call for, yet they do this almost every single time so I’m starting to wonder.
It seems to be the system. 2 d-men pinching in the corners and the center takes the slot/front of the net. It’s the dumbest thing.

Unfortunately as a GM you’re directly tied to who you bring in as coach. And he not only went with a pretty unpopular choice in Ruff, he also kept Nas over from the previous regime.
Neither move really feel defensible to me at this point.
I mean, we said the same thing about DeBoer and Hynes too, look how their teams are doing right now.
Maybe Ruff is part of the problem, maybe our depth is an even bigger problem, and another coaching staff wouldn’t do better. I feel like this young team needs stability. I’d honestly be surprised if Ruff is here next year, given the criticism, but I’m not sure changing the coach in the middle of a season where we have trouble getting NHL goaltending, there’s COVID and all, etc. is gonna change a lot for this group, or is even the right thing to do.

Fitz has been GM for like 18 months. He’s made some real good things in the short period he’s been here. Not sure I would blame him still.

I think he will upgrade his shot and I do think he will adapt, but I don`t like his shooting work - techique, shooting decision, power of shot, accurate of shot etc.
You should understand - I don`t think that he is useless or doesnt have NHL future. I do really think he heas potential to be even 1 ppg in good seasons.
But I don`t like his shooting work(I think it`s one of the most meaningful thing Devils must ask on the draft from forward), compete level, physical game, two way game. His season isn`t end, and I plan to watch him more.
It`s very often not high skill players with good compete level are successful on NHL level, like Aho. Lundel is more closing example. Lundel was VERY good two way forward, has better stats in Liiga. Zacha was freakin big and fast with good shot. Just imagine if he will put together. And now here we are.
Thanks for your response! I understand you think he’ll be effective, don’t worry! I know comparables aren’t always the best, but who would be a good comparable for Slafkovsky?

Hey, we won last game and for the first time in seemingly forever, I remembered and came here to make the next GDT thread
You're all witnesses, if we lose today it's not my fault lol.
Anyway, would love to see the boys carry the momentum from last night into today.
Let's Go Devils.
Damn… I almost want to delete it now…
Last time I made a GDT here, pretty sure we won, so there’s that at least haha!

Sometimes I overdo it. yeah.
But, gddmn I don`t like Lambert =-D
From my calculations and what I’ve read, Lambert is shooting 2.7% on the season (2 goals, 75 shots). He shot 6.4% last year as a 17 year old, with 110 shots in basically 2x the number of games. Seems like he’s shooting a lot. Do you believe that this shooting % is in some sort unsustainable with the amount of shots he’s putting on net? Maybe a little unlucky also?
I’m not the biggest Lambert fan, but I thought that was interesting and wanted to hear your thoughts on this.

After a big win last night, I’d love to see another offensive game from the boys!
I’m a big optimist, but unfortunately, on a back to back, after a huge number of goals scored and with Mac most likely between the pipes, I’m not so conviced… Maybe they prove me wrong
Let’s pull it off boys!

I don’t follow baseball closely enough to really know much about the Mets, but who do the Jets have to build around that are comparable to Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Dawson Mercer, and Dougie Hamilton? The Devils obviously have work to do to get this straightened out (especially on the goaltending & coaching fronts) but that’s a pretty good core that any competent GM should be able to work with.
Do you blame them?
Absolutely not. Mac hasn't been able to steal a game. I wouldn't trust him either.
-
Seems like the team just folded after Mac gave up that first goal. I honestly believe they have no confidence in him whatsoever. They had total control of the game and were playing great hockey in the 1st. They needed Mac to step up and keep it scoreless for the offense to keep on the pressure and increase the lead. He can't seem to ever do it for us this season.

He’s been awful quiet the last couple games…
Anyway, I just absolutely fvcking love watching Jack Hughes play hockey. Most electrifying player we’ve had since Kovy (yes even more than MVP Hall).
on a less bright note - Blackwood blows. I’m getting pretty tired of the excuses. Hamilton, Graves, and Siegenthaler are a “real NHL defense.” Now, Ty has been brutal, and Subban and Severson are obviously up and down, but Blackwood is just not a good puck stopper at this point. Hasn’t been since early last season. His rebound control is beyond awful, and it’s pretty much a guarantee he’s going to give up 4-5 goals a game anymore. .897 save % is not a starting goalie.
If we got even league average goaltending (and power play) we’re right there on the bubble for a playoff spot. He needs to get it together soon or Fitz has a rather large and unexpected problem to deal with along with everything else.
Haven’t thought about Screeching Weasel in forever. Big time nostalgia.
Mac also still has heel issues that’ll last for the season, from what he said to Steve or Kenny, I can’t remember. Let me find the tweet.

He's not. He has 8 points in 20 games and most of those came in a 6 game spell. His skating is just not good enough.
I have more hope for Studenic and Clarke that Foote. Studenic has 10 points in 15 games and looks good. Clarke got off to a slow start but now has 14 points in 18 games.
The thing with Utica is although they are winning it's being done by committee, chase De Leo is the top scorer with 15 points. And he is 60th in AHL scoring.
Arsnye Gritsyuk is having an excellent season in the KHL. He might be the closest in terms of having an NHL imapct. He isn't elite at anything but he is good at pretty much everything. He has a good shot, he has nice hands , he can make a pass, he has developed a habit of stripping th puck as the other team is looking to transition just like Jack. His skating is above average and he gets involved physically. It will just be if we can get him to come over.
Holtz will get more looks this year. I am still disappointed the Devil's brought him up for that stint. He has struggled since going back to Utica, and as expected it broke his rythm.
Can we really say Holtz struggled? He is still playing practically at a PPG clip, and has 5 pts in 7 games since being called up.

We’re 22nd in the league in goals for. It’s definitely not our biggest problem but it’s a problem.
I feel like Goals For per Game is a more accurate metric given teams having played more/less games, etc. We're 17th in the league with 2.91 GF/G, which is pretty much middle of the pack. With a passable PP, we might be top 10.

Goaltending too. Bernier was atrocious.
I'll pin the 5th and 6th goal and Bernier for sure. With that being said, the first 3 goals were a result of abysmal defense. No matter who's in net, giving up this many high danger chances is not viable.

This team’s problem isn’t offense, they’ve shown they can score goals, and if I’m not mistaken, are middle of the pack in GF/G with an ATROCIOUS PP. With even a mediocre PP we might be top 10 in GF/G in the league.
The PK has gotten better, but the point still stands: this team’s problem is defense. They’re careless with the puck and with their defensive zone coverage, and give up way too many high danger chances which then hurts the goaltending. I don’t care who is in net, making stops against so many high danger chances is extremely improbable.
Scoring 4 last night was sufficient to win us the game. Defense killed us again.

Here are better looking pictures. Don't hate it as much as the first picture that leaked, I kinda dig it. But I don't like the shoulder stripes, like at all.

Holtz turns 20 in January, so I wouldn’t exactly call it rushing him. Plenty of guys from that draft outside the obvious ones like Laf and Stutzle are now in the NHL (including Mercer), and playing well. His countryman Raymond has been tearing it up for example.
Plus at this rate (5 G in 4 GP) he looks too good to be down there.
This. And if they feel he's out of place and struggling, they'll just send him down again. Holtz is still young, and players develop to their own pace.

Honestly, the only 5 players I can count on for offensive efforts are Bratt and Hughes. When they don’t get on the scoresheet, we’re screwed. Nico is part of the conversation, but he has crap on his wings. Dude fed Zacha like crazy last night and had a good game, but of course Zacha isn’t doing sh!t out there.
