This is getting concerning.  This is gonna sound weird, but I don't think the game was as lopsided as the score.  Regardless, this is becoming more and more concerning.  We just don't match up well against the Panthers.  It shows.  I expect the same when we play the Isles, the Bruins, the Jets, and the Kings.  Teams like these are the only ones that show they're truly superior to the Devils.

    Shots: 26-16 Panthers

    Corsi: 33-26 Panthers

This was as lopsided as they come. They were constantly in our end for long stretches at 5-on-5 where we couldn't clear it. We never had prolonged possession in their end and Montoya was barely tested. It was bad. I took off work for this and I regretted every second of it. That was one of the worst efforts I've seen in quite awhile. I was half hoping Cory was gonna just put one in his own net, skate off the ice, and flip everyone off. Not that he played great, but my God, not one skater even showed up.

  2. Love Patty, but he's been frustrating to watch at times the past few years. I wish he'd be a bit more selfish and shoot more often these days because it always seems like he's looking pass instead of shooting even when he has golden opportunities, especially on the PP. Hope he has a rebound year and can end his amazing Devils career on a high note this season.

  3. I actually like Ruutu. I mean, like most I don't think we should've ever traded for him, but he's been better than I expected. Don't understand how he was below Zubs on the depth chart considering he was doing more with less time. I'd love to see him out there not being dragged down by Gionta this year, but I'm sure I won't get my wish.

  4. That's a big turnover and what if the new guys just don't pan out?  I can see Palmieri being alright and Zacha being alright, but what if Boucher and Matteau just don't work at all?  What if Josefson is nothing more than a 4th liner?  What if the guys we signed on FA contracts from Europe like Kalinin don't work out?

Wonder what his backup plan be if that's the case.  I don't expect the Devils to make the playoffs this coming season or even really the season after but I fear we might end up just in a holding pattern for a bit.

If they don't pan out then at least we know to move on and replace them instead of keeping them in the AHL as "what ifs". Finding out whether they're capable of being NHLers or what their future roles could be is the actual important part here.

  5. Always liked Zubes. He was always a guy I looked forward to seeing at player events and whatnot because he was just such a friendly guy. I once brought up to him that I was part Lithuanian and every time he saw me afterwards he'd remember and we'd get to talking about how his hockey program in Lithuania was going and all that kind of stuff. On the ice, until the last couple of years, it was fun to watch him play the forecheck and just seemingly win every corner battle, usually kicking the puck out of a scrum to himself or a teammate. It was his time to go but he was definitely a player I will look back fondly on.

One of my favorite Zubrus moments:

  6. The big positive is, good or bad, we're going to finally figure out what some of these guys are capable of. Can Gelinas good outweigh the bad? Can Josefson produce on a line with better linemates? Can Boucher be a scoring threat in the NHL? Even if the answer to ALL of these is no, at least we'll know and the Devils will be able to adjust accordingly. Even if we suck, at least we're moving forward and building towards the future.

  7. Definitely saw this one coming. I am not disappointed. He had a lot more misses than hits over the past several years and is a big reason we're in the mess we're currently in.

  8. Gragnani is an interesting choice, has a lot of offense.  I guess they figure if Hraberenka's going to make the team they need PP guys for down there.

The nice thing is if Gragnani does well, he'll be nice insurance to both push Gelinas and also come up if he struggles or gets injured.

  9. Well he's supposedly pretty fast so I guess that fits in with our new team philosophy.

Bingo. Hynes philosophy is all 5 guys in on the attack so that requires d-men who can pinch and still have speed to get back. Moore can do that. That being said, I don't think Merrill can and I could see this leading to us trading him in a package for a forward. I really like this move.

  10. LOL at your "big issues".

Today was one of the most smoothly run season ticket holder events I've been to in my 5+ years of attending. Doors opened on time. Lines moved. Food was good. Things weren't just an unorganized mess as usual where no one (attendees or those in charge) know what's going on. I actually really enjoyed the Q&A itself as well. The surprise of Zacha attending was great and an awesome way to introduce him to New Jersey and the fans. I also thought EJ Hradek did a great job running it and asked questions that I actually wanted to know the answer to instead of just fluff. I had a great time today.

  11. Monmouth County and yeah it's definitely a mix around here unfortunately. You wouldn't know from the stores though. Walk into a Modell's or Dick's and it's just so much more Rangers stuff than Devils. It's disgusting. I also find that more people are willing/quick to jump on the Rangers bandwagons around here than the Devils. So diehards, I'd say it's 50/50. But when factoring in casuals/bandwagoners, it's definitely more Rangers.

  12. Well, this year is over and the draft is a bit of a ways away, so I figured I'd see who you guys were looking at that you'd like to see in red and black. Honestly, there are a couple of guys I'd love to see the Devils target on offense that are due to be free agents.

    1. Michael Frolik - We need a RW and he could slot right into the top 6 for us. He's not afraid to shoot, scoring 15+ goals each of the last two years and I don't know if anyone else can offer him an immediate top 6/PP role like we could. Plus, he's also a consistent + player so he'd fit right into the Devils way of thinking. I'd see no issue putting him on a line with Zajac and Cammalleri. And he's also only 27.

    2. Mike Fisher - Yes, he doesn't make us any younger but of all the free agents at center this year, I think he'd be the best fit. He's an ideal 2nd line center who has 35 points in 51 games this year (16 goals) and would solidify us up the middle for a couple of years until a draft pick is ready to take his spot (Barzal possibly?). I'd like to see him on the 2nd line with Henrique and Elias on his wings.

    3. Matt Beleskey - Depth scoring...we need it. He'd immediately help us fill that need as a guy who can finish in the middle 6. He's also only 26 right now. Put him with a playmaking center like Gomez and he could put up 15-20 goals on the 3rd line.

So with those 3 additions, I'm looking at a line-up like this:

    Camm - Zajac - Frolik

    Elias - Fisher - Henrique

    Beleskey - Gomez - Boucher

    Matteau/Gionta/Zubrus - Josefson - Ruutu

Bernier would be a casualty of "too many bottom 6'ers" and will probably get offered a better role elsewhere. Ultimately I'd like to see Zubrus bought out and have JJ, Ruuts, Gionta, and Matteau fight it out for 4th line duties. Unfortunately it also pushes out Tootoo. I just don't believe in him as a long term solution and think with his play he gets a better offer from a team that overpays.

    Defense:

    Greene - Larsson
    Gelinas - Severson
    Merrill - Hrabarenka

Lots of youth which is a bit scary, but at least we'll have more goals coming up front to bail them out. It's not a perfect line-up, but it's at least possible and reasonable. This is of course assuming no trades and such.
