  1. People seem to forget too, Shero almost has to do something significant this offseason because of our need to get to the floor. Say the cap ends up at 82M, even after generously signing our RFA's, we'll still be 5M or 6M below the floor, I'm pretty confident that Ray is going to make some sort of trade over the next couple weeks that's going to bring in some salary, and hopefully that salary is in the form of one or two impact players that we can add to Hall, Nico, Jack, Palms, Vatanen, Seve, Butcher, etc.

Just be patient, if three weeks pass and we're still sitting $6M below the floor with no meaningful players left out there, then I'll get a little panicky.

Also re: Subban, I would love PK here. PK sometimes gets a little overlooked in the top defenseman in the NHL conversation, I really think he's that good. Top 5 for me right now. Plus, I love a player with a little swagger.

Jacob Trouba instantly becomes our best defenseman by a longshot.  Vatanen is a guy who can't stay healthy and is one dimensional.

Ray sees some  depth guys on teams that win and think that's how the Devils will win.  Hence bringing in a third liner like Kevin Labanc instead of an impact player.  That's what's going to happen.

Sami Vatanen instantly became our best defenseman when we traded for him, so it's different...how?

Wasn't aware Hall was a depth guy and not an impact player. Shero has made his big impact player trade and has worked to supplement pieces around him. He stole Palmieri and Palms is arguably a 1st line NHL forward who's capable of scoring 30 goals, that's an impact player. Johansson, while it didn't work out here, is a 2nd line forward on most teams, that's an impact player. You can't selectively whine and twist around history to fit your narrative when our rivals acquire good players. That's how pro sports works, the teams you dislike are going to get good players from time to time.

There's no more Chiarelli to pick on anymore and it'll all be for nothing anyway when Hall demands a trade because Joonas Doonskoi doesn't do it for him.

Palms and Vatanen have gotten us exactly what?

Ray has a cargo cult understanding of what it takes to build a winner.

The Rangers trade for Jacob Trouba, a top 4 defenseman: An astute move that deserves praise

Shero trades for Sami Vatanen, a top 4 defenseman: Ray has a cargo cult understanding of what it takes to build a winner.

    Step off the ledge, bud.

  4. Oh my gosh, how will we ever recover from the Rangers winning Shattenkirk Trouba over us? :(

It's June 18th people, JUNE 18TH. We have plenty of opportunities to improve the roster, take a chill pill.

First of all great job. A lot of good stuff in there.

I couldn't disagree more with Podkolzin at #3 though and I don't think that's such a bold proclamation. I think he's going to fall, and not because he's committed to the KHL for two more years, but because there's just not much to get excited about with his game in comparison to the other top forward prospects a la Zegras, Turcotte, Caufield, etc..

Actually, Podkolzin's most standout trait to me, is a Zach Parise-like tenacity. He works hard to get everywhere he's going on ice. It looks like he's going to run out of steam at points but he never does. He doesn't have that effortless glide on the ice though and I don't think he has the same level elite offensive skills as other top prospect forwards either.

At quick glance, the other thing I noticed was Tomasino at #13. Very high. Interesting.

I love the offensive tools he has in combination with that tenacity, I'm higher on him than most at this point but he has the hands to score highlight reel goals and is willing to drive in on defenders in order to create chances, but I love how he can be dangerous without having to drive the net either since he can score from the outside with his shot.

I personally think his production in Russia (or lack thereof) has been overblown considering his lack of ice time in the VHL, but I also can't blame people for dropping him below guys like Turcotte or Byram. This is a strong top 10 and I've really enjoyed seeing the different debates on who everyone values in each spot.

I have Pod at #3 on my board, but I realistically have him mocked at 9th to the Ducks. I love the kid, but he's likely gonna fall.

  6. I would have been uncomfortable giving Karlsson that many years, but I will say, he was still arguably the best defenseman in the NHL this year playing on one ankle. While it's not something I was eager for the Devils to do, I don't blame a contending team for ponying up for Karlsson.

  7. There was something a couple days ago that insinuated the Sharks made him an offer that would make him the highest paid defenseman in the league, so that would be over $10M per season

Hawks are on crack, Maatta is a pylon and I seriously thought had negative value, getting a good going forward and a pick is a big W for the Pens.

Thanks for sharing! I was hoping for Hoglander to the Devils at 34, but after reading your assessment, that seems like wishful thinking. There will be some good players available there, regardless.

Hoglander is my pipe dream for the Devils at 34 (along with Tomasino, who at this point is an even deeper long shot), I think he'll likely be there in the 20's if the Devils are interested in a trade up but I'm a little doubtful he'll make it to the 2nd round. Wouldn't call it impossible though, crazier things have happened, I would have said the same thing about Bode Wilde last year.

  10. Sounds like Matt Grzelcyk will be back tonight for the B's, which sucks considering I think that's a real underrated player. Definitely makes their blue line better getting to swap out Clifton or Moore for him.

Really hoping the Blues can pull it out on the road tonight, will be rooting for them hard.

Advanced stats from the WHC. Biggest thing that jumps out at me is how much better Hughes is at zone entries.

This doesn't surprise me much, I felt like when I was watching games they were just about as good as each other and Kakko was just getting a lot more ice time and more puck luck, this kinda confirms that feeling for me. Think the World Championships got way overblown for a lot of people.

  12. Follow up to the Hall nonsense from yesterday: https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1781527/shero-agent-deny-report-that-halls-not-interested-in-extension-with-devils

"No idea where (the website) got that aside from a 'source,'" Shero told NHL.com's Mike Morreale in a text. "Nothing on our end has changed and I have never heard differently from Taylor or Darren Ferris."

Hall's agent said, "I'm not going to speak to it because it's all fictitious and I'm just not going to respond to any of those questions out of respect to the conversations and discussions that are going on."

    Very interesting.

Not sure if he has an NHL option in his contract, but Lehtonen signed a two year contract with Jokerit in the KHL back in April. Not sure if the KHL has contracts with NHL options, however.

They say one tournament shouldnt make a difference for the draft. But Caufield sky rocketed from like 20-15th to 5th overall since the U18

I personally had Caufield at 11th before the U18's, he's still in that area but I've been flirting with moving him up to 9th after the tournament. With how late in the scouting cycle it is, that's kinda the biggest impact one tournament can have for 1st round talent players, later round players can shift around so much more but by now opinions are pretty solidified on the top prospects. That's why I think it's ridiculous that people think Kakko is gonna pass Hughes just because of a good World Championship, these kids have been getting scouted for 2-3 years now, two weeks isn't gonna make a drastic difference.

As I scoured the internet, I came across this interesting viewpoint in regards to Kakko's "playing against men" thing that's basically becoming a Meme right now.   Now I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the Finnish League or any other league since the NHL is the only league I know but this was stated by someone *claiming* he knew so take it for what it's worth :

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kakko played against "men" in the Finnish league. His results were impressive, but "men" in the Finnish league isn't as impressive as it sounds as it's not that great of a league.

Obviously the NHL is better, but so is the KHL, and so is the SEL.

Even the Swiss league is nipping on Liiga's heels, and the AHL is probably only behind Liiga by a bit.

It's really not comparable to just say "men".

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is this right?    Is the KHL, and SEL better than Liiga?

That's pretty accurate, in terms of league strength, it probably looks something like this:

    1. NHL
    2. KHL
    3. SHL
    4. LIIGA
    5. AHL
    6. NLA (Switzerland)

While there's obviously due credit for producing the way he has against men and pros over in Finland, there's countless examples of high producers coming over from Finland and struggling even in the AHL, see Malte Stromwall, Henrik Haapala, Ville Meskanen, Antti Suomela as examples over just the past two years. I obviously believe Kakko is on a way different plane than the players I just cited, but production in the LIIGA is a little more overstated than it deserves. Like Kournianos said, Hughes has produced at an unprecedented 2:1 or 3:1 clip at the US Program for years now, and the U18 Program plays a good chunk of their games against college teams as well, so even playing at the program he was playing against guys 4-6 years older than him with pretty frequent regularity.

Is NJ pizza basically the same as NY? Didn’t get to try it either time I’ve been to NJ.

Both are amazing, living in upstate NY for the past couple years has sucked in that regard because the pizza up here is trash compared to back home.

Not sure if anyone has been there, but Kinchley's in Ramsey is probably the best pizza I've ever had.

  17. I think the team I'm rooting for the rest of the way is San Jose. Would love to see Thornton finally get his cup, it would be a shame if arguably the greatest pure playmaker in NHL history never wins a Cup.

Kind of concerning he didn’t make the team? Or is Sweden just pretty stacked?

I wouldn't really read a ton into it, most of the forwards are established NHLers and if he wasn't getting a spot in the top 6, tie likely goes to the veteran for a bottom 6 role. I think he could bring a bigger impact than Kruger, Nygard, Lander, M. Kempe, and Rasmussen, but we all know how hockey people like to favor older players.

Still think it's entirely reasonable to expect Boqvist could be on the team next season. Kid is by far our best and most skilled forward prospect (unless you're counting Hughes into that equation) and he had a really good U20 season in Sweden. Only Emil Bemstrom tied Boqvist in points for players aged 20 or younger in the SHL this season, though to be fair Bemstrom did it in 4 less games.
