  1. Exactly, this was always a lose-lose for fans like I have said 100 times. It seems all the Devils fans ever wanted was for Parise to just love the state, the organization, and the fans. They wanted to be chosen. But at the end of the day, he is not worth close to this kind of contract. Not a fvcking chance. And if he had chosen the Devils, the honey moon would be pretty quick and the realization of how bad this deal is would quickly set in.

I'm excited for the fans of Minnesota. These are some of the best fans in sports that have had nothing good to cheer for since they came into the league really. This is a team that has been floundering for years. While they overpaid for some stars, it's something for them. And that's enough.

    Respond to me.

  2. What was he supposed to say when he said things like "We'll be ready to go next year," or "Oates leaving is a big loss for us?" "The Devils will be back next year," and "Oates is a big loss for the Devils." If he says stuff like that days after losing in the finals and while still under contract with the Devils then everyone would read into it that he won't be coming back. Either way fans would look into it way too much and it's not Zach's fault. None of us really know what was going on in his head but my guess is that at that time he wanted to come back but once he became a free agent it made the decision more difficult than he was expecting. He didn't know who was going to offer what and assuming he goes to Minnesota with Suter, he didn't know Suter was going there yet either.

I'm going to be upset if he leaves, but I won't hate the guy. I have a Parise World Junior Championships jersey and a Parise Devils jersey. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to have them re-customized. He will still be one of my favorite players because of his unmatched work ethic and I'm looking forward to having him on the Olympic team for years to come, and if he goes to the Wild I guess I'll be rooting for him in the World Championships almost every year too haha.

Zach could have said plenty of things. "Oates is a big loss." "It's a shame to lose Oates." "Oates is a good coach. He'll do great in Washington." These are all pretty neutral and fans wouldn't really be able to look into them.

  3. This is beyond stupid. I'm sorry.

Fans: Zach, please don't go...come back. We love you. Let's win a Stanley Cup next year.

Zach: (thinking what to say as fans have made a great gesture by coming out to support the team after the loss) Thank you. Don't worry about it.

Zach: (thinking) Oh crap...in a split second reaction, I said "don't worry." I hope they know I just meant for them not to worry about what I'll do....oh crap...Maybe fans will think that means I am coming back...oh crap, I certainly shouldn't have said "we" in the post game interview after the game even though I am under contract. Maybe I should go back and explain to them what I meant? Ahhh it's too hot today...

You may not agree with other fans' point of view, but you have to see how some fans might take his comments to mean more than they actually do. That's all I'm trying to say. If you refuse to make that concession then you're just being stubborn. I apologize that some fans, including myself, may not be as extremely intelligent as you.

  4. Hm? He's going to break their hearts anyway, if he plans on leaving. I don't get the sense that this is an easy decision for Zach, or that he was always dead-set on leaving, or anything like that. And hell, he might still come here and everyone might have to revise their scorn.

When I refer to breaking hearts, I see that as building up hopes of re-signing only to dash those hopes. After the season Zach dropped a few very subtle hints that he was going to re-sign. Instead, it would have been kinder to fans to just keep his mouth shut or to watch his word a little more closely. He made it sound like it was a slam-dunk that he was going to sign with the Devils when in fact it was more of a toss-up. Again, Zach doesn't have to be kind to fans, it just would have been nice if he were.

I agree that this is not an easy decision for Zach. Like I said, I feel the scorn is coming from the fact that Zach made things sound like he was coming back when his return was actually much more questionable. What I'm trying to say is that Zach could have left the Devils without first building up the hopes of Devils fans if he had watched his words a little more carefully.

  5. Breaking news: Zach Parise used "we" when discussing the Devils when he was still under contract with the Devils. This kid really is just a dumb jock.

He did it after the season multiple times and an intelligent player would know how fans would take such a comment.

You're also forgetting the "don't worry" comment he made to fans at the rally to meet the Devils bus.

He never did anything that wasn't allowed or that wasn't technically correct, but a smart player would see how he was string a team's fans along, albeit probably unintentionally.

  6. I think what a lot of people around here are frustrated with is how Zach kept dropping subtle little hints about returning. In interviews after the season he would use "we" as if he were a member of the Devils and planned to continue being one. He told fans "don't worry" when they were chanting for him to come back at the rally that met the team bus. Zach made it sound like he was coming back when in fact it was more of a toss-up. I don't think people are mad at Zach for making a choice that is clearly his; it's just the hints he dropped to string Devils fans along, acting like he'd definitely be back. Now that we're seeing that there is a solid chance of him not returning, people are getting pissed at Zach's earlier actions.

What I think actually happened is that Zach is just not an intelligent person. He never realized how his comments would be seen by Devils fans and taken as a commitment to stay with the Devils. Yes, it's pretty clueless of him, but I don't think he had any ill-intent; he just didn't realize what he was dealing. He's dealing with the backlash of these comments and will be for the rest of his career if he decides to leave but it's probably not a big deal to him.

  7. I think the real money is on Wedgewood so far. He's had some big playoff wins, and I think we'll get to see if that translates to the AHL this year. I'll definitely go up there to see him if there's a lockout.

Yeah it seems like a lot of the members on this board are pretty excited for Wedgewood. I don't know too much about him besides what others on the board have said, but it seems like he has a chance to be the real deal.

  8. You are definitely right that it's possible that Moose has improved as he's aged. I just think that it's a huge risk to take with out much to help you if it fails. They would need a 1A 1B situation for Moose to start. The only players on the market who may be able to do that are Niittymaki, Ellis, Conklin, Raycroft, Montoya, and Johnson. Looking at those names, I'd rather just have Marty and Moose.

As for Frazee and Kinkaid... I like Frazee alot. I love his style. It's very entertaining to watch and he's very quick. However, he gets hurt too much. After that first great season in Lowell (28 wins, .920 save % and All-Star appearance), he's only played 31, 33, and 36 games, and his GAA went up as his save % dropped. It looks like his chance has passed. Kinkaid has only played 1 AHL season and had similar numbers to Frazee, so it'll be interesting to see if he improves and by how much.

You're probably right in saying that a Marty and Moose tandem is better than a 1A-1B situation with Moose and one of the FA goalies you listed.

I guess with Frazee and Kinkaid things are still a bit unknown and we just have to wait and see how things shake out. Frazee's falling SV% does worry me a bit though.

  9. I was basing it more on his career to this point. His games played are: 9, 66, 41, 21, 19, 21, 36, 33, 47, 34, 27. He couldn't clinch a starting spot, and I feel like there must be a reason. For example, he was the starter that year with 66 starts. The back up was JS Aubin, who was awful that year (as was the entire Penguins team). The next year, Sebastien Caron came in and pushed him out of the spot. Then he backed up Dan Cloutier in Vancouver, Marty Turco in Dallas, and Kari Lehtonen in Atlanta. That 2009 season, he was the starter over Ondrej Pavelec as Pavelec eased into the starting role. It just looks to me like he's found his niche.

As for the stretches, I was referring to when Marty first got hurt in October against LA. Moose took over and was very, very strong, but seemed to slow down as we got into late October, early November. He got some time off when Marty returned and then came back with a shutout. Then he was sort of a mixed bag... great games and poor games mixed together as Marty was struggling in December. When he and Marty got into a rhythm at the end of the season, Moose was outstanding. I don't trust any of our prospects to be able to handle half a season right off the bat. Even if Moose could do 60 games hypothetically, I wouldn't want to see 22 games of Kinkaid or Frazee with no safety net. I think Marty and Moose make a pretty perfect combination.

You say that "He couldn't clinch a starting spot, and I feel like there must be a reason," but we don't know enough about the inner-workings of the teams he played on to make a fair assumption. If you look at the SV% early in his career, you'll see that he could barely keep it above .900 despite playing on a variety of teams. Perhaps this means that Moose just wasn't very good early in his career, and that's why he couldn't hold down a starting role. I know it may be a crazy suggestion, but what if he has actually improved with age? This is an honest question: how would you explain the positive jump in SV%? Yes, he performs well as a backup, but I don't think there's enough evidence to say he couldn't handle 60 games a year at this point in his career. Yes, we can make assumptions, but something changed for Johan later in his career.

I agree that Moose was very inconsistent early in the season, but isn't that exactly what Marty was? And yet that was good enough to keep us in the playoff hunt. As for Frazee and Kinkaid, are they even considered prospects anymore? Didn't they both have boatloads of trouble? The point is moot now but we probably would have been better off signing a cheap backup.

  10. Except Hedberg has never been relied on as a starter in the NHL. He has played more than 50 games once in his career, which was for a terrible Pittsburgh team. He hit 47 one year for Atlanta. If you look at stretches where he had to play multiple games in a row last season, he would start out hot and cool down. He plays much better in relief, which is what makes him a perfect back-up goaltender.

You touched on it but in 2009 he started over half of Atlanta's games and put up a .915 SV%. I don't think it's fair to look at a few stretches where he played consecutive games and then use that small sample size to decide that he's incapable of being a starting goalie. If anything, I'd say his ability to be a starting goalie is unknown. What stretches are you referring to where Hedberg played multiple games?

  11. Like I said elsewhere, if Parise has sense, he'll sign with the Penguins. Who in their right mind would pass that chance up?

For one, we don't know the money situation. I know there are rumors about how much the Pens have offered, but those are just that; rumors. Perhaps money is a bigger factor than we've realized, and the Pens just aren't offering enough. Additionally, what if Zach doesn't want to be the third best player on the team. Crosby and Malkin are in their own league in terms of ability, and after the novelty of signing a very good player like Parise wears off, he'll go back to playing third fiddle. If he instead signs with the Devils, he'll be the best or second best player on the team and a likely fan favorite. If he goes to the Wild he'll be the home-town-hero. I'm not sure why people try to over-simplify things so much, but if the decision were that easy, it would have already been made.

  12. I think the Devils would finish out of the playoffs and would ruin a prospect in the process.

Although it's obvious now that Hedberg won't be the starter, do you really think that he is worse than Marty at this point? Marty's SV% over the last three years has been .908, .903, .916. In comparison, Hedberg has been at .918, .912, .915. At this stage in their careers I don't think there is much of a difference between the two; Hedberg may even be better.

  13. Yeah and where are you getting good goaltending next year? It's not as if the Devils are passing on viable options. There are no better solutions than Marty or Hedberg in FA or the system for next year. Trade's the only other option and what are you getting besides Luuu, who's a far worse option cap-wise or Johnathan Bernier, who Dean wants a first-round pick for?

What do you think of Hedberg being the starter with a young guy in the system backing up?

  14. He was at 5 this year. Id be fine w/ it for another year. I think its the years.

Do you think his play merits 5 mil? Or are you giving him a little extra because of who he is? Even at 1 year, I don't think he was (last year) or will be (next year) a 5 mil goalie. Does he deserve extra money because of what he means to the organization. That's what is debatable.
