If Greene's cap hit is a penny over 2.5 mil, I'm gonna have a fvcking coronary.

I guess you already had 7 coronaries given the salaries we've seen handed out today. other than the reasoner contract and maybe the theodore deal, all of the deals have been way above what most estimates i saw people making. when the cap goes up, salaries go up - it's a given. the deals handed out today have been bonkers.

If he were being honest that's what he'd have said.

The other part of that is who's ahead of him on the Devils...White-Volchenkov-Tallinder? Fayne had a nice rookie season but I don't know that you could put him above Andy yet, same with Taormina...so right now Andy IS a top four on our team. But it does sound like Lou's looking to make even another addition on the back end via trade.

What's Lou supposed to say, we gave a four-year multi-million contract to a guy that's going to be on our back pairing?

If he signed the guy to a reasonable amount, he could have just said "we like his offensive potential" or something like that. To call him a top 4 defenseman probably means they paid him like they would a top 4 dman.

It also means there's a glut of defensemen in the organization ( who thought we'd be saying that last year). Larsson, Merrill, Urbom, Taormina, Gelinas, Burlon. Even with White out the door next year, there will be room for maybe three or four of them.

even though greene was on the 'back pairing', he was not getting back pairing ice time. in fact, he was 4th among defensemen in ice time per game who actually made it to UFA, and 53rd overall.

this is one of them good problems. burlon and gelinas won't be ready for the NHL in the next 2 years unless they take massive unexpected leaps forward. merrill can stay in college for as long as he wants - the longer he stays, the more value he provides to NJ when he gets out.

if you guys see how the market is working, how many defensemen got one year deals? i'm not in love with a greene signing, but the devils would basically be gambling on the trade deadline, and hoping and praying that the team got few injuries.

Andy Greene is a #3 or #4.... as I said before...and he wants to play for us!

here's Lou's more complete quote"

http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2011/07/devils_gm_lou_lamoriello_turns.html

"I think Andy (Greene), like everybody last year, at different times was in and out. I know what he can do. We felt very strongly that he wanted to be here and we feel he can bring more offense than he did last year. Defensively there is no concern whatsoever. He's a top four defenseman in our opinion."

Lou was speaking "defensively"... and that is surely true
