Very cool. This means he can play in the NHL, really, if he looks good in camp, but won't necessarily play in the NHL. Gives us good flexibility with him without having to gut someone else. Still, I am hoping for some kind of cash dump trade to allow for a great Parise contract, but in the mean time, this is excellent.

Simply unbelievable. Makes RNH's signing look downright stupid. Is anyone still questioning Lou's negotiation tactics?

+1 Just incredible.

TG tweeted that Lou never included performance bonuses in an entry level contract with any player, but we never drafted this high (a player who was supposed to be top 2) since a very longtime.

and maybe Salvador

Nah...Salvador is going nowhere after not playing this past season.

There has to be a trade coming now. Volchenkov, White, Tallinder, Greene, Larsson, Fayne, Urbom, Taormina, Corrente and Fraser.

Volchenkov, White, Tallinder, Greene, Larsson, Fayne, Urbom, Taormina, Corrente and Fraser (and maybe Salvador) is 11 D-men.

I reckon you are right about a trade, seeing how 8 is prob the max we'd carry at the NHL level, however, it's also possible/probable that Corrente and Fraser play in the AHL, and Salvador doesn't return, bringing the number to 8.

signing bonuses are built into the contract. he will receive $925,000 per season, and $92,500 of that is a signing bonus paid on july 1 (i think) each year.

the thing about most of the performance bonuses is that they are near impossible to attain.

Thank you kindly for your unbelievable knowledge of contract structure.

Corrente is waiver-eligible, I don't think they would want to risk sending him through, 'cause I'm not sure that he would make it. Fraser is waiver-eligible but I think the Devils have to offer him a one-way contract after last year and if he got through, that'd be it. I think neither Fraser nor NJ wants to be playing in Albany next year.

Been saying the same thing for months now...and you forgot Salvador

Volchenkov, White, Tallinder have no trade

Greene obviously a starter

Leaving 2 spots left for Larsson, Fayne, Urbom, Taormina, Corrente and Fraser and Salvador

Realistically Salavdor going to AHL, and Taormina and Fayne making the top 6

Fraser filed for Arbitration so he will be sent to the Gulag Archeplegos and I am guessing #7 will be Corrente or Urbom

Maybe Larsson starts in AHL until a convenient injury occurs

this isn't an addition. this signing was expected all along, and it's at least probable that he doesn't play in the NHL this year.

I think its almost guaranteed he's on the team this year. I think Lou dangling that for him was a big reason for accepting a deal without bonuses.

i don't think that's a guarantee, he will have to outplay the people ahead of him on the depth chart. the guarantee is that if he does so, he will have a spot on the team.

no individual bonuses means he's probably going to play here this year. swedes definitely drink the lou-aid.

Money isn't everything. As a 22-year old without any NHL experience, almost $1 million per year is very good coin. Let's say he signs for $3 million per (as many people on this board predicted), that price tag comes with huge expectations, no?

I'm sure the Devils will pay his room and board too, so that $1 mil is almost all in the bank...

Right, that's why I said "almost" guaranteed. You said it was probable that he doesn't play in the NHL this year, but I think it's a lot more likely than unlikely. With this kind of deal, the Devils have no reason to hold him back from the NHL if he's able to keep up, and I'm sure that was discussed in the negotiations.

Since it's such a low cap hit, if he impresses enough in the preseason, he's making the team.

EDIT: Just saw you made the same point.
