Colin226
I think its almost guaranteed he's on the team this year. I think Lou dangling that for him was a big reason for accepting a deal without bonuses. He could have just offered him the chance to play in the AHL with some starts in the NHL.. Larsson seemed to really want to just play in North America ***** I did get to catch 15 minutes of the camp scrimmage yesterday. Saw Larsson skate and I have to say he is a pretty massive body out there compared to everyone else (besides a few others like Urbom but they looked close), especially when you think that he's only 18, and the few plays I saw, he looked very in control with the puck Edited July 15, 2011 by Colin226

Just south of 7mil seems very reasonable and it lets everyone know that this is our best player.

devlman
With this Low cap hit and the inevitable subtractions maybe we can have room to trade for a pmd Edited July 15, 2011 by devlman
ghdi
Today was also a deadline. He needed to be signed by today to ensure that he can play here come next season because he was contracted in Europe. Today was the last possible day he could be signed. I think he's been promised something that cant be put into a contract i.e. promised top club minutes. I'm glad he's been signed and I look forward to seeing him on the ice sooner rather than later.
Daniel
With this Low cap hit and the inevitable subtractions maybe we can have room to trade for a pmd That's what Greene is getting $3 million a year for. Today was also a deadline. He needed to be signed by today to ensure that he can play here come next season because he was contracted in Europe. Today was the last possible day he could be signed. The deadline could have been extended until mid-August, but you'd have to kick $100,000 to his Swedish team.

Not really, he could have been signed until August 15th, but after today the Devils would have to pay Skelleftea $100,000. EDIT: Daniel beat me to it. Triumph
Wait -- Where is our GM Triumph who said Larsson would not be playing with the team this year? Where did I ever say that? My posting must get you really riled up. I said it doesn't make sense to have him on the team this year. I still don't think it makes sense, but if he earns a spot, it's now less of a burden on the team. I think he's been promised something that cant be put into a contract i.e. promised top club minutes. I cannot see Lou ever promising such a thing to a player. Money-wise, it's in Larsson's best interest to get on the team right away and play out his ELC as quickly as possible - that is way more important than any of the bonuses he could have earned, because most of those are unattainable, and if Larsson is anywhere near as good as Doughty or Hedman he will be earning 2M+ per on his second contract. Colorado Rockies 1976
Obviously great news, but I wasn't worried about this one...like Tri pointed out, guys drafted before him and after him had signed, which helped define parameters. At any rate that's one less thing for Lou to worry about. We all know about the biggie that's still lurking. If I'm guessing, I'm thinking there's been communication all along, but it's all being kept under wraps...I'm thinking we probably hear nothing at all until Parise's deal is very very close or signed. I'm definitely not on the "what is Lou waiting for?" train...I think he's working on this. If Parise wants out for some reason he will, and nobody wants that

SatansDevils
Have to agree it is impressive of Larsson. Great contract and looking forward to seeing Larsson for the next 3-years and more years beyond that. Larsson is a class act. Now the focus is on re-signing Parise longterm. halfsharkalligatorhalfman
From reading some armchair analysis on HFboards, this actually makes a lot of sense for Larsson/his agent as well (not just a case of drinking Kool Aid). Basically with a 3 million dollar cap hit from games played bonuses, there was zero chance he was going to play in the NHL this year. Now with a more reasonable number, he'll be given every chance to make the team. Making the team this year means getting to UFA status sooner at about age 25 (not to mention RFA at 21) and making real money.

It makes a slight modicum of sense, but in reality its mostly some fans from other teams trying to make themselves feel better. His agent, JP Barry, represents almost every big name in hockey, and he's never had one of his top players sign without bonuses. He also went on record to say that he wasn't too thrilled about it, but Larsson made the decision. Trust me, if it was truly up to Barry / Larsson, it would be a $3M+ deal. Devs3cups
Great contract, it's pretty impressive that larsson didnt ask for any bonuses. I would personaly prefer Larsson to play in the AHL next year, but it's not like he never played with men, we'll see next year.

That's in part because of pressure from the NHLPA. Trust me, Larsson would never hit most of these bonuses. It's an unusual situation where a team picking in the top 10 doesn't have sufficient cap space, the player is thought to be NHL ready, and the bonus cushion is off. I think it's a guarantee that Larsson makes more money if he plays 10+ NHL games this year than under any other scenario. edit: that's assuming larsson will be an above-average player by year 3 of his ELC Edited July 15, 2011 by Triumph
halfsharkalligatorhalfman
Trust me, if it was truly up to Barry / Larsson, it would be a $3M+ deal. True. Based on Larsson's hockeydb site (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=118565) he's really only played two years in the Swedish Elite League, just like Victor Hedman. If Larsson's projection is the same as Hedman's, Hedman has been at least a 925k player for Tampa these past two years and seems on the path to greatness. If Larsson in camp truly looks ready for the NHL I see no reason (unless we really want to hold on to some RFA years) to hold him back even at age 18. Hopefully NJ's depth on D will make the transition easier as well and he can become an effective NHLer even faster. Slot considering position and inflation would be higher than that. Probably around $3.5M but I don't not what the maximum for bonus writing is. The slot went cheap last year, too, though, so maybe this is a trend.

NJDevs4978
I do wonder what the players who sign these contracts wind up making in actual money? Probably isn't as big a difference as the cap figure would have you believe, but still at least it shows Larsson wants to make the team as fast as possible and not have the contract be a hinderance. nessus
I'm thrilled with this signing, but I really hope he doesn't get rushed into playing for the team before he's ready. We need to make sure he has developed and doesn't turn out to be another Victor Hedman. But I'm sure that won't happen.
