To get rid of Rolston (and keep Zubrus), lower salary buy $3M, and get a good player in return makes Lou a genius...again

And yet people still say that if this and that isn't done by their personal deadline, then they want Lou out.. The guy is a genius and successful in part because he is patient with his business deals

And I'll drink to that :koolaid:

The whole point of this was to dump the money. This has been an issue since December when Rolston waived. Hes been another thorn in our back for a while. He had a wicked shot....if he made it anywhere on net.

I think he may actually fit in well in NY.

I agree, but signing a 5/45 contract is also a pretty bad idea. That's why I think in the end, they'll settle on something in the middle. A contract that takes Parise sometime into his 30s and has a manageable cap hit.

would have to be something like 8/64, then. i mean, have you seen what people like ehrhoff and b. richards got?

I wouldn't be too sure. Hunter is fairly respectable, and he's not too shabby on the penalty kill. Also, if he can get back to the 30-40 points he put up on the Islanders, that's not too bad a deal for $2M. I think we give him a shot to show what he can do.

Fine by me. I hadn't really kept up with how Hunter was doing for them. I just know he's been injured a lot.

Kind of a big part.

One year left on his contract. We already have Parise for one year and Rolston would have never been re-signed anyway. It makes no sense to trade him for just a "meh" player. If Hunter puts up numbers like he did in 03 and 06 where he got 20 something goals then I'd say I was mistaken. Lol. The Devils have a lot of cap space coming off the books next year and really I don't think salary is as big of an issue as people claim it to be. This year perhaps but not in the future.

I must be the only one that doesn't like this trade. Rolston wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made him out to be. Where is Hunter going to start? We already have so many people and I doubt Trent Hunter is going to out preform and out score Rolston. Aside from a salary dump I don't see how this trade favors us at all...

Cutting an overpaid, severely aging Rolston and adding a productive, solid leader in his prime in Parise is exactly what makes the trade.

Poor Islanders fans got a rumor this morning their team was closing on a trade which prompted their boards to fill up with gems like this from HF:

"Good job to everyone who guessed the Isles would wait closer to August 1st to pull off a big trade. Not a bad business move if it brings a star to Long Island."

Obviously, this trade is all about the cap space it creates this season. However, it also frees up DeBoer a lot when it comes to the lineup and allows Elias to center Kovy and Tedenby/Palmieri on the second line, while not rushing Josefson if he isn't ready for second line minutes. Rolston proved last year that he could only play left wing with Elias as his center, meaning Josefson had to play with Kovy on the second line and Elias would be with Rolston on the third. It also gives Henrique a better shot at making the lineup, possibly to play with Josefson and Clarkson on the third line.

While the swap, talent wise, favors the Islanders, the flexibility it gives Lou to sign Zach long term and continue to allow some of the young players to develop is a huge win for the Devils. Great trade!

If Parise gets anywhere near next summer as a free agent, he's testing the market. And if he tests the market, either we have to overpay or we lose him. This trade was 100% about freeing up the cap space to get Parise to sign a long-term deal starting this year.

Except that they need to sign Parise right now. And the fact that Trent Hunter has an extra year is irrelevant because he leaves us plenty of options if he doesn't work out.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount Trent Hunter. A few years ago he was considered one of the more talented young players on the Isles. However, a call up of new talent and injuries have put him on the backburner. I'm actually looking forward to what he can add to this team now that he probably has a solid roster spot.

any islanders fan who thinks that a 'star' is coming to long island either hasn't been an islander fan long or is under the influence of multiple controlled substances.

mazz: if you look at the numbers, the devils had a tight window in which to sign parise. now they have a much wider berth, they can basically give him whatever he wants.

Your neglecting the fact that despondence can often lead to delusion.
