Quinn01
What a crazy year for the NHL between this and Atlanta moving. Itll be interesting to see what happens now. Hopefully the franchise doesnt disband.
mmajeski06
Then we'd wind up with Rolston again? No, thanks! That would be sad, but funny at the same time. I was really hoping this would pass. It is sad that my generation has seen the Islanders as nothing but a joke of a franchise. Fishsticks, DiPietro, losing season after losing season. MadDog2020
I think the taxpayers realized If Wang was so confident about the plan he would fund it himself.... They should have partnered with Ratner to have made sure the Brooklyn arena had sightlines & the size for hockey. They still have a few years to have another vote, so while on life support there is still a chance they stay on the Island. Who know maybe in 2014/2015 the taxpayers will vote in favor of it & the tam can squeek by a couple more years in the Coliseum during construction. There isn't going to be another vote. It was pretty well publicized that yesterday was it. The only way the Islanders stay on Long Island is if Wang builds a new Coliseum privately. That's all there is to it. RowdyFan42
Yeah, how dare they not want to pay more taxes when most of them are on a fixed income in one of the most taxed counties in the US!! You know, that's the biggest line of bullsh!t I hear out of old people. They act like they're the only people on a "fixed income". Uh, no; if you're in a salaried position, your income is "fixed", it doesn't vary like it would if you were hourly. There isn't going to be another vote. It was pretty well publicized that yesterday was it. The only way the Islanders stay on Long Island is if Wang builds a new Coliseum privately. That's all there is to it. And they won't even let him do that. Wasn't the Lighthouse project supposed to be mostly private money?
Jerrydevil
This is kind of a bad time to have a referendum that raises taxes.

The town of Hempstead didn't want the grand project (Lighthouse) Wang envisioned. The town sent a scaled down version but Wang wasn't interested. That was the last I heard about it. Toaster13
This is sad news. I feel the Islanders have a great history and for them to have fallen on hard times is awful.
Devilsfan118
Don't worry guys, The Islanders will pull a Pittsburgh, draft some superstar kid and miraculously turn around their organization. That's what the NHL does when a historic franchise is on the brink, right?
Satans Hockey
I really hope the Islanders stick around. I don't ever root for the Rangers or Islanders to be successful but damn its fun when all 3 teams are good in the same year. Wasn't the Lighthouse project supposed to be mostly private money? My dad (who was the breadwinner in my household growing up) made about $120k in his last year of employment. He had to save since he did not have a pension and right now social security is giving between him and my mom about $31k a year. So basically his income went down to 1/3 of what it was. Yes they do not have a mortgage anymore since it is paid off, but the property taxes are well over $15k a year and they have medicare. However, medicare does not pay for everything so they need supplemental insurance for their meds and that takes a pretty penny out of it. So yeah it is a huge difference when you are retired and have to live off of savings and social security. Thank god they saved otherwise they would have to sell their house, and even now they are thinking about it because it is just too much money to live in their area (northern somerset county). So what about the senior citizens who do not have a pension and lived check to check and could not save? Should they have to pay for an arena too? Yeah, no sh!t you don't have as much money when you're a senior citizen unless you're independently wealthy. That's not what I was saying. I was taking issue with the elderly's general idea that they're the only ones whose income does not fluctuate. And nobody would have had to pay for an arena if the hockey-hating town supervisor of Hempstead hadn't blocked Wang's attempts at building the Lighthouse project at every turn. If the Islanders end up leaving in 2015, Kate Murray will be the ONLY person to blame.

However, they are more vocal about they are on a fixed income and since are retired and have more time on their hands, they can use their voting block to swing referendums such as this. Your perception of them must have started with a bad experience with them along the way.

My Mom only gets 10800 annually. What was the tax going to be on and how much is the question? Someone should find that out so we don't argue like idiots. My dad alone it would be less. In terms of how much, depends on which sides figures you use. It seems to range between $14-60 a year per household on average every year for 30 years. Using that extreme a total of $420 to $1800 per household on average for lifetime of it.
CarpathianForest
So is it a property tax or what? Sorry, but I gotta go a little bit, not as far, with Rowdy on this. The Baby Boomers(my Dad is a part of this generation) really fvcked this country up. You know you want something provided for you you gotta pay for it. I will also agree Baby Boomers were not a great generation, but compared to the current generation Y (or Whine), they are still miles better. I have never seen a generation with people so full of entitlements and selfishness.

The amount of coddling these kids recieve now, both at home and at school, is mind numbing. This generation's children will be in for a rude awakening once they start working for a living.
