MadDog2020
Teemu in 2003 was very close. I remember they even scratched Gomez and one other player(forget who) at the deadline. It was supposed to be a Gomez centered package for Selanne/Damphousse that broke down at the last second Had no idea they made a pitch for Gretzky. I do remember Toronto was super close to signing him though before the Rags swooped in I was at the game against Atlanta on deadline night 2003, and when Gomez was announced as a scratch, the building was buzzing. There were all kinds of rumors about where he may have been headed. No one knew what was going on.

Not to mention this board was as bad that night as it was at any point in the first half this year with all the negativity when we didn't do a 'big' deal. I mean we did trade for Marshall, Rheaume and Smehlik but wasn't any of the big names that got dealt. And reading the thread in the HOF, it was Stan who made it worse speculating there were four deals pending (which turned out not to be true I think) so that's why we all thought there was something more behind the scratches than just Burns making a point. Of course the team made matters worse with a ****ty loss to the Thrashers.

I remember driving home from that game feeling pretty discouraged at the fact that we didn't make a big move, which was compounded by the fact we lost to the sh!tty Thrashers (I even remember Dan Snyder scored a goal in that game for Atlanta). I thought we needed a goal scorer to put us over the top that year, especially seeing how loaded Ottawa was. How happy was I to be wrong lol. StevenGendel
One of the best almost trades was at the trade deadline of the 1999-2000 or 2000-2001 season. We had a deal in place for Ray Bourque but at the last second they sent him to the Avs. We end up losing the Cup to the Avs. Could you imagine that defense, Stevens and Rafalski, Nieds and Daneyko, Bourque and White! Marty would have given up less than 1 goal a game!
