Single Game Pricing

Why is it that aqua STH prices were higher than royal blue but they are priced the same for single game.

Also for former STHs , last year were you able to purchase single game tickets in your section for the same price you paid for your seasons?

Maybe the team thought they were more desireable to STH than to single game purchasers.

I didn't buy seasons because I live two hours away and knew I couldn't get to more than 25 games and would be losing money on all 16 games not attended.

With this new pricing, it's gonna cost me the same (or more?) just to go to 25 games as if I bought 41.

If this information was public in April, there might be a lot more season ticket holders right now. The reason I didn't jump was because I knew it would cost less to just go the stubhub and ten dollar line route.

Now, not to be confusing, but while it makes sense to provide a solid reason for season tickets (this new pricing certainly does that), the invididual pricing just seems too high. 20 minimum for a panthers game the last few seasons was a 3 dollar deal on stubhub. Meanwhile, it's a 35 dollar minimum for rangers games. The value (aka sh!tty game) decrease is less than the premium increase.

You can still get sth's, you know. I got a pair in the $22 section like two weeks ago.

I think the single game pricing may drive even more new STH.

Adam, keep in mind in your analisys you also have 3 preseason games you will get no where near face for.

Yeah I mean if I wasn't a STH, I'd be looking into the $22 seats right now for sure.. You guys can still buy season tickets, fyi.. Just sell 1 or 2 premier games and a few classic games to get some of your money back (a sacrifice, but worth it)

**** I'll probably start my own thread, but I'd be happy to buy tickets at the STH presale (for the STH price) to anyone who wants tickets to a game or games.. Just PM me the dates and section colors you'd like to be in.. We'll arrange payment.. All I ask is that you fully commit to attending the games you buy.. I'm doing it for the fans who love this team and just need a price break because they have trouble spending full price for a bunch of games, not so that other people can resell and profit off of my generosity.. This offer is good for anyone on the boards

Admittedly, I was looking into partials myself, but when I saw the price difference was minimal between the total cost of half a season in the upper and a full season in the $22 section it just made too much sense to do season tickets there.

I saw that too. And now that single game prices are out I think that may motivate more people that were on the fence.

I will add this (from inside the Devils office).. They will be making a huge effort to end those last minute ticket discounts that they gave out to 95% of the games last season.. I mean if ticket sales really suck, we might see it, but from the conversations I've had they will only be having 1 last-minute discount per monthand only to people following them on Facebook and Twitter.. There will still be family nights and college nights, but the team realized that giving too many last-second discounts just encouraged people to wait for them and not buy tickets right away..

So I suggest you buy your tickets early to the games you really want to see.. With the new "pick your seats" feature, the good seats will be gone a lot faster early on this season

They just last a fan going to games at the last minute too.

haha I kid but will it be both concurrent on facebook and twitter or some on FB only and some on Twitter only? I am asking because I hate and never use Twitter and only use FB here and there.

Teams that do this type of pricing model are usually franchises with high ticket demand and who have sold out for years. The Devils have no business trying to pull this crap.

This logic seems reversed to me. A team that sells out always can just charge a high price for all games and not worry about it. It is teams that see demand fluctuate more wildly that have the most to gain from this model. The Mets have had variable pricing for many years now and with their attendance issues it makes perfect sense. Their games against the Yankees are gold mines; prices could probably be higher still on those. The Wed/Thurs matinees against out of division NL opponents? Not so much. The Devils have this same type of fluctuating demand. What do those sell out against the Rangers, Flyers, and Capitals tell you? The they could have charged more and still sold out or near to it.

I don't know all of the sections' prices from last year (is that info available somewhere?) so I can't fully analyze things, but in the section where I have season tickets, 226, the move seems fair. The 21 Classic games are still $37 like last year, so no change there. The 10 Premier games were raised to $45 which is about where I saw the secondary market pricing those types of games last year (in the case of the Ranger ones, still below the market price). The price was lowered to $30 on games where I've typically had no one sitting behind me. It was always tough to resell those games, and it still will be. But all of the game-to-game fans can now see St Louis on a Thursday for a more reasonable price.

And because it's a transaction, if the Devils made huge errors in pricing here, not only will game-to-game fans be hurt, the team will be hurt too, so they'll probably straighten things out pretty quickly if it doesn't work as planned. The Giants and Jets raised prices for their new stadium by quite a bit last year (PSLs anyone?). They still sold out their games, so while it sucks for people who wanted to go but couldn't afford it, can you really say it was the wrong move?

Not really sure how it will go and things can change by the start of the season, but I'll do my best to find out and inform the masses on here.. Point is, if you know you want to go see a game you should go ahead and buy it early.. Aisle seats and lower rows will be taken especially fast now that people can pick their seats

Exactly.. This was the right move for the Devils.. Take more advantage of high demand games, and give a discount to the less desirable games.. We would all love the team to charge less for Rangers/Flyers/weekends, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.. Those games have a higher demand and thus should cost more, while lower demand games should cost less.. It's simple business economics.. Now just need to choose, do you go to fewer games this season but hit the big games, or do you go to more games during the week when prices are cheaper?

I feel for the fans here who won't be able to attend the higher demand, pricier games which is why offering to buy tickets for people at the STH rate.. I feel that passion for the team should be rewarded.. But from the Devils standpoint, you just have to admit it's the right move for the organization

Just trying to help my fellow fans

And with this new system that price wont change at all on stub hub. So, it defeats the purpose of what the Devils are trying to do. In the end, it just prices out honest people trying to buy indiv. games thru the Devils.

How? The only games that are more expensive are ones that sell out and have stubhub prices above face value anyway. So are we talking about the people who always waited by their computers/phones for the presales to begin and nabbed their Flyers tickets right away? I doubt that people who operated this way were all priced out by an 8 to 15 dollar rise on those games. And while it truly is unfortunate that some folks were priced out, the price tag for keeping them on is substantial and this is what tough decisions in business are all about. I can't imagine that choosing to hurt some customers in order to attempt to get more revenue out of the rest is a decision taken lightly by this team or by any business for that matter.

And let's not forget that 10 games are discounted now; that's 10 games with lower prices this season.

When is the STH presale? I might have to take you up on that offer if I still can't find anyone to split supporters section tickets three or four ways.

The StubHub market was only really hurtful last season because the team was crap.. From February through April in 2010, you couldn't buy off StubHub for less than the STH price.. I still don't know how people were able to sell tickets for around $6 to most games last season.. I mean, unless they got them for free, they had to be taking a loss just to dump the seats.. The Devils can't control people willing to take a loss and sell for a lot less, but I know for a fact that they do not want to hold a ton of discounts and ticket giveaways like last season. Unless this team completely sh!ts the bed again, you won't see a secondary market anywhere near what it was last season

This is really screwy. Where I sit (orange), if I did the math right, they actually DEVALUED my tickets year to year by around $300 or so. So I mean in valuation, they didn't do me alot of favors. In perks I get it back +.

And I think it was Tri that said they have to do this to adjust to the secondary market.... I've never gotten anything near those "gold-premium" prices on secondary. Granted I'm a conservative seller, but alot of the time it's hard to get by regular face value (not to be confused with STH face value).

I think they may have outthought themselves here.

LOL, "last minute ticket discounts" in the first half of the season were free tickets with holes punched in them.

People aren't going to tend to buy tickets right away if there's no reason to buy them right away. Law of supply and demand. They probably broke even at best on ST's this year, they better watch what they do or it's going to be real empty real fast.

I'd post the chart comparing single game prices vs STH prices but this site won't allow me to paste it into a post. Someone tell me how to do it and I will. I have the chart saved into a word document.

Basically, the savings that you can still get by getting season tickets is so much that if you pay for 20 games via single ticket prices then it is actually cheaper to just get season tickets anywhere on the balcony! it's unreal looking at this chart they emailed me today!

What games were you selling and when?

I doubt that. Do you honestly think a Rangers game isn't going to sell out? Maybe in October or November it won't, but they will make up all that money at a later date.

Also, what NJ4Life said - they are trying to drive people into become season ticket holders, imo.

How did they devalue them (I'm assuming you also posted on HF lol)? You have about a $30 difference over face for your seats.. Now, giving them away like they did last season (or last minute deals for $25 a ticket), that's devaluing at its worst

Orange Seats

Premium Games

- Face value: $105

- You paid: $65

Classic Games

- Face value: $85

- You paid: $53

30th Ann. Games

- Face value: $70

- You paid: $44

Overall, I will prob still go the same amount of games as I figured a couple months ago. About 15-20.

Also Colin, what are the updates about viewing parties? Is this going to be a monthly or regular occurance? I know you asked us to do that survey about where we are from for the Devils and you said that was part of the reason. Thanks!

Colin he's saying that his tickets were 'worth' 85x41 ($3485) on face value last year, and this year they're worth 10x70+85x21+105x10 = $3535 this year. so his math is incorrect, they're worth very slightly more.

I don't really understand how variable pricing would be a bad idea overall - what it does do, unfortunately, is penalize the passionate fans who jump on single ticket purchases.

It's looking like 1 or 2 per month through December.. And we are hitting all the major fan hotspots like Hoboken, Bergen, Essex, Morris, South Jersey (as 1 big party encompassing Mercer, Burlington, Ocean, and Camden), Monmouth, Rutgers University, and I think a few more

We're just finalizing dates with the bars in these areas to make sure they can accomodate us.. Any other questions while I'm in the Devils office?
