2011-12 Albany Devils thread

Albany won a crazy game against Hershey 6-5 with a shoot out. After going down 2 goals early on the Devils countered with 3 straight goals, Perkovich (Wiseman and Zalewski), Zajac (Zharkov), and Gelinas (PP, Taormina and Sislo). Hershey would tie it up shortly after that and then the Devils would exchange goals with Hershey twice, Bernier (Zalewski and Wiseman) and Sestito (Zharkov and Burlon). The Devils won the shootout 3-1 with goals from Sislo, Anderson, and Bernier. Kinkaid stopped 28 of 33 shots including 3 of 4 in the shoot out. Bernier was 2nd star and Zharkov 3rd. Here is the gamesheet. Below are the highlights.

Their next game is Friday against Rochester at 7:30.

Kalamazoo lost to Elmira 3-2 in a shoot out: Sova (-1, 1 Shot) and Haczyk (-1, 3 Shots). Young did not play. Clermnot did not get into either game this weekend, limited to just the lone mid week start which is somewhat disappointing.

Defense has been the backbone of Albany’s turnaround from a 1-5-0-0 start to a 7-1-1-1 record in its last 10 games. Entering a one-game weekend (at Hershey on Nov. 19), the Devils occupied the top spot in the Northeast Division with an 8-6-1-1 record (18 pts.).

“We have to play good defensively if we want to win,” said defenseman Alexander Urbom, who leads the team with a plus-3 rating. “It’s not just the defensemen, it’s the whole team.”

The Devils 10-game stretch has been the most successful since an 8-2-0-0 run midway through the 2008-09 season. During the most recent span, the team has posted a 1.96 goals-against average with two shutouts.

Of the team’s eight victories, seven have come in one-goal games.

I suggest checking out the full article, seems like guys are really buying into the system. Note this article was published before the Hershey game Saturday night.

Kalamazoo lost to Cincinnati 5-2: Sova (E, 2 Shots) and Haczyk (Assist, E, 1 Shot). Young and Clermont did not play. I really hope Clermont gets into at least 1 of the 2 games this weekend. Young hasn't played since 10/22.

Two articles on some of the Devils prospects with Kalamazoo. The Clermont article is fresh but the Sova article was posted earlier this month.

Youthful goalie Maxime Clermont growing up with K-Wings

"Max brings a lot of excitement," Karlander said. "You remember when you were that young, starting out, and I was older even coming out of college. He's a real levelheaded kid and he's excited to get his chances."

"He's learning, he works hard every day, he tries to get better every day," Bootland said. "He's a young guy and he wants to get better. "We're confident when he's in the net. We haven't played our best hockey when he's in there, so we wanted to make sure we had a solid outing for him (Saturday)."

K-Wings rookie Joe Sova translating college success into contributions for Kalamazoo

The last couple games, Sova's defensive partner was veteran Sam Ftorek.

"He's very poised, good with the puck," Ftorek said. "He's got good vision. Obviously, he's pretty highly touted since he signed with New Jersey.

"He's easy to talk to. For me, it's nice because if we're struggling or not getting out of our zone, we can talk about what's going on and he's really open to listening."

With a league-leading plus-8 rating, Sova was named ECHL plus performer for October.

Said Bootland: "Joe Sova's a guy that has produced at the college level offensively and, so far in his pro career, has shown he has a knack for putting the puck in the net or creating opportunities.

"He's working on the power play and working on his shot. He's been a contributor for us so far."

Albany has a 3 in 3 this weekend. Here are some notes from the Times Union:

Injuries to D-Jay Leach (lower body) and Matt Corrente (upper body) have left the Devils with six healthy D-men. They have 16 healthy forwards, enough for five full lines even with Stoesz back on the blue line.

“I like our depth, too,” coach Rick Kowalsky said after this morning’s practice. “To say we have a checking line, I don’t know that we have that right now. I definitely have some options to move some guys around.”

Leach (sidelined since Nov. 5) and Corrente (Nov. 11) are scheduled to begin skating Friday. Kowalsky said there is an outside chance they could be available by next weekend.

That's good news about Corrente, he was having a solid year before he got hurt: 14 GP 2 G 6 A 8 Pts +2 42 PIM 14.29 SH%

Right now Albany sits 4th in the Northeast Division, 9th in the Eastern Conference with a 10-7-2-1 (23 Pts) record through 20 games. They are 6-1-2-1 in their past 10 games and have a 51-61 GF-GA ratio. They have the same amount of points as the 8th place Hershey Bears and are just 5 points from the 1st place team in the Eastern Conference, the St. John's Ice Caps.

Skater Stats

Rookie RW Joe Whitney (19 GP 6 G 6 A 12 Pts -5 10 PIM 2 PPG 14.63 SH%)is tied with RW Matt Anderson (20 GP 4 G 8 A 12 Pts -2 6 PIM 2 PPG 11.43 SH%) for the team lead in scoring with C Steve Zalewski (20 GP 4 G 7 A 11 Pts -2 10 PIM 1 PPG 7.69 SH%) right behind.

Goalie Stats

Rookie Keith Kinkaid is 6-4 with a 2.55 GAA .914 SV% 1 SO in 610:54 MIN thus far while veteran Jeff Frazee is 3-5-1 with a 3.20 GAA .882 SV% 1 SO in 534:42 MIN so far.
