"It keeps you accountable a lot more thinking that it’s not going be easy to make the playoffs," goaltender Martin Brodeur said Friday on the eve of his 18th – and possibly final – NHL season. "For whatever reason when you make it year in and year out, I don’t know if you take it for granted, but you feel that you’ll be able to turn it around at one point and get it done. I think we suffered from that last year. We have to be on our guard for it this season. You don’t want to live that twice in a row."

These Devils are determined to demonstrate that last season was an aberration and not the start of a trend of playoff-less springs. They believe they are better than their 38-39-5 record indicated and that they can build off their impressive – but mostly meaningless – second-half success.

"We want to prove that was a one-year thing and that we’re better than that and we deserve to be in the top eight and we deserve to be in the playoffs," new Devils captain Zach Parise said. "But we have to prove it. Last year before the season, we were one of the favorites to win the Cup, so it’s definitely a different feeling this year that we’ve got a lot to prove. We’ve got to get back there."
