Devilsfan118
Article: nj.com Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur tweaks leg pads and has won 4 of his last 5 starts "Since the All-Star break, the 6-2, 220-pound Brodeur has tweaked his leg pads and he's 4-0-1 and playing some of his best hockey of the season. Brodeur has lengthened his leg pads from 36 inches to 37 inches, and increased the width at the top of the pads from 9 1/2 inches to "about 10 1/4 to 10 1/2 inches,'' he said. The bottom remains the maximum allowed (11 inches). "For me, I think it protects a little more the five hole," said Brodeur, who'll be in net on Tuesday night when the Devils (31-20-4) travel to Buffalo (24-25-6). "When I go down on the butterfly there's a little more pad there then I used to have. I always played with my pads wider at the bottom and tapered at the top like goalies did in the 1990s. Interesting article, it's dated last Monday but I just came across it today and figured I'd share. Obviously I think Brodeur has been playing much better lately, he seems to really have gotten himself into the zone. His numbers have been drastically better since the all-star break. But a question that begs asking: How much has the extra size has helped improve his game?
Elias26
He finally gave in.
sundstrom
But a question that begs asking: How much has the extra size has helped improve his game? sounds like an enzyte commercial. i'm sure it's helped and marty has been better lately - he's also been luckier and that can't be discounted either. whatever it is, if he can hold this level or close to it, the devils will be in decent shape. ZeroGravityFat
If you can't beat them, join them. Shows how all other goalies started to over take him, and how much he really still has in him with a tweak.

Quinn01
Didnt he adjust the size of the pads during the all-star break as well?
DevilMinder
Didnt he adjust the size of the pads during the all-star break as well? That is what the article is talking about, he has only gone bigger once.
Quinn01
That is what the article is talking about, he has only gone bigger once. Oh durr thats what I get for posting here and writing a paper. I wouldnt say he has been playing "better" simply because of the equipment changes. I think, unfortunately, the fact that his father is ill has put a flame under his ass to so speak. A goaltender could have the top of the line equipment that money can buy, that doesnt make him the best in the league.

The Queen begs to differ Relevant Good thing he has these completely necessary and HUGE shoulder pads to protect himself! Edit: Wow that's a huge picture, let me fix this.. Masked Fan
Interesting point of "protecting the 5-hole more" even though Brody isn't a butterfly only guy,. So, while it assuredly helps, it ain't the only key to his success. The man stacks the pads, poke checks, puck handles and flashes the leather better then ANYONE else EVER. He's healthier, and getting the rest he needs WHEN he needs it instead of feeling he has to play though it. (thanks to !)
Pepperkorn
I haven't posted on Marty but I just think this says so much about his flexibility as a goalie. It's so hard to change stuff like this after all these years. To me it says he really IS still having fun and still learning. As for his improved play I think he just connected with the in-game urgency. It's easy to understand the urgency when objectively looking at a game -- but it actually takes quite a lot of work to hook into that subjectively and make it a positive energy source for a game. In fact THAT is what Gomez just can't control about his game - never has, never will because he's too defensive and untrusting. As for why now... well I don't think anyone can say. I get a vibe that he connected into a place of strength and safety, not so much anger as some allude to. From where I sit Marty isn't an angry person at all. He's a strong person when it comes to certain things. Again I can't help but return to the thought that he is what Gomez should have been. YOU CAN STOP READING NOW I'm wondering - Marty kind of accepts himself as he is and takes it from there. He builds off his strengths and weaknesses in a positive way. That's really impressive. Not everyone will be happy with all of his choices but they are quite right for him. It seems he finds a way to always move forward and grow from any thing life chucks at him. hmm.
