Muevelos
Phew... This has been a weight on many shoulders all season.
Devs3cups
Sigh of relief. If Elias went to free agency and signed with another team, our offence would've been pretty bad..
ghdi
Im not exhaling till its confirmed, but this definitely made me fell a lot better. I looked up as much on the source as I could find and have no reason to believe its BS.
thefiestygoat
Elliotte Friedman (Hockey Night in Canada), Michael Russo (Wild Beat Writer), and Chris Johnston (Sportsnet/NHL Network) follow him so I definitely put some stock into this guy. Hopefully it's true since I never want to see Elias in another jersey.
Devilsfan118
I didn't want to jynx anything, but I suspected he had resigned a while ago, and they just wanted to keep it under wraps. Hence the whole not telling the media anything about the negotiation process.
moustic
What's the point of keep it under wraps ? I read that people from management (And marty) (a soon to be member of management anyway) were worried that FA would be afraid about the team financial problem... Showing to the World that we take over a new franchise goalie & sign Patrick Elias (along Zub) ... that would have been a good answer no ? Daniel
Wonder I'd it has something to do with lenders having to approve larger contracts.
Mitico12
Good strategy by Lou. If he announces the signing of Elias earlier, given that Elias' is probably commanding similar money to what he was already receiving, it would not bode well in the Clarkson pursuit because it would give his camp reason to believe that the Devils don't have the money to sign Clarkie long term. By announcing it later, it gives the Devils more leverage.
Pepperkorn
To not say anything is good all around - no one needs to know Patty is signed except Lou and Patty. If the league thinks the Devils have no money to play with they'll low ball Clarkson. If the league thinks they NEED the guy then they'll be going nuts trying to outbid their imagination. This helps the free agents maximize offers. (see what I'm doin' here? no? what else is new?) Edited July 3, 2013 by Pepperkorn

Pepperkorn
This argument would be batsh!t crazy except in the case of Lou. No- it's just dumb. A team offers what it offers -- what is this bullsh!t about a team might not be able to pay? Who gives a fvck? They will pay. This is just stupid. You weigh offers not on the possibility of what a team might or might not offer. You ALWAYS ask no matter how much you THINK a team might have. This is just plain stupid reasoning. Why are people even going there? Not that I even care but ..
NJDevs4978
Clarkson's agent already assumed we didn't have money anyway, how does extending Elias change that exactly? If anything it behooves Lou to get it done to tell FA's on other teams that we're not broke and waiting for permission to sign Elias.
