He's been atrocious defensively so I can't argue with this. Writing was on the wall. Of course Salvador has been crap too (and offers nothing offensively) but he doesn't have to be accountable for his play.

And then there's Salvador, for every goal he doesn't score, there's 2-3 goals per game he's responsible for the opposition team scoring on us.

 

I do agree though, it's not a Gelinas/Salvador debate. My ideal condition would be for Larsson to come back up and take Sal's spot. Sal's looked like a bigger liability than 2011 Tedenby on a penalty kill.

This isn't true and the numbers back this up.  Merrill makes just as many boneheaded plays as Gelinas.

this is debatable at best. Special teams will not make or break this team, but lack of defense will. Gelinas' production 5v5 does not warrant his play there, and he cannot be used in the pk.

As I said in the other thread if you want to use 7d and have gelinas as the pp specialist that's fine, but for all the whining people do here about not letting our guys develop properly, playing gelinas as a pp specialist will hurt his development. It's better he go to Albany where he can get 20 mins a night and work on things in all situations.

Merrill has not been better defensively, or at least not by much.  Like I said, I need proof Merrill has been SIGNIFICANTLY better.  Not just better, but he needs to blow Gelinas away defensively for this move to not hurt the team.  

 

I agree that we shouldn't use Gelinas as a PP specialist. That's why he should get the 15-20 minutes of ice he was getting.

Zidlicky needs more criticism for him mistakes and bad penalties. He's makes some sweet moves and has a great offensive upside but man does he take bad penalties at the worst times. Plus he makes some bad plays sometimes.

Zid's point production has dried up.  But I still think we need him.  Our PP is effective because we have 2 units on it capable of scoring.  PP depth is what makes our PP good.

Yeah if it's between Gelinas and Zids I'd rather have Zids in but he does make some bad mistakes. Only Brunner takes penalties at worse times than Zidlicky.

There were a few times over the last few games where Gelinas pinched in or tried to stand up in the neutral zone only to get beat and gift the other team a 2 on 1. I think he did it twice in the Ranger game. He looked bad.

I like Sislo and have no problem with him getting into the line up if Zubrus is hurt. I do wonder how that must feel for Josefson and Loktionov to be the extra forwards and constantly get minor league call ups passing over you when injuries occur though.

Is Loki signed for just 1 year or more and didn't Larionov had to convince him to stay as he was ready to jump to the KHL?

Loktionov is a RFA but I can't see him sticking around. He turned down a $3M offer last summer to play in the KHL to play for the Devils for $725k this year.

Yeah I think Igor convinced him that he should stay in the NHL for lower pay because there is more opportunity here.
