Daniel
For those who are interested, there's a sports analytics conference, if you want to call it that, that's been happening all day. Hockey scouts/coaches/GMs are now doing there part of it. If you follow enough hockey people on twitter, you should be able to pick up most of it. A few interesting nuggets thus far. Craig Custance @CraigCustance 17m And we're off. Burke asked immediately if his view on analytics has changed. Says no immediately: "I think it's an eyeballs business." Craig Custance @CraigCustance 11m All sides agree plus/minus a useless stat. Burke: "If you're on a horse[bleep] team, you're probably a minus player." Craig Custance @CraigCustance 8m Don Sweeney says the Bruins track the type of shot quality that is produced when Patrice Bergeron is on the ice to help define his value. Craig Custance @CraigCustance 5m In defending Ovechkin, Don Fishman says AO's ability to score clutch goals isn't always appreciated: "That's the thing analytics misses." Daniel
This one was kind of funny: Craig Custance @CraigCustance 1m Burke: "If you ever want to see statistics misused, sit in on an salary arbitration in the NHL. The creativity is staggering." #SSAC14

DJ Eco
Can't believe they gave that clown a seat of prominence in the Team USA selection process.
Devilsfan118
Seriously, Burke is the Trump of hockey. The more I think about it the more it makes sense.
SterioDesign
what he said kind of made sense to me though, i can totally imagine agents cherry picking some stats to make his client look good.
devilsrule33
Every year Brian Burke sits on a panel at an analytics conference and trashes them. Pretty lame. The issue with conferences like this is no team for any sport wants to talk much about their doing. Anything that might give someone advantage is all proprietary information. So very little of value is given to the general public.
SterioDesign
what i like is that one about the Bruins saying they look at the "shot quality" with videos and all. They don't simply look at a sheet and assume "ohh well 6 shots for there, he had a great game!" like a lot of posters are doing here. It's pretty damn tough to get 6 shots in a game at the NHL level and not have a good game. inb4 you say "just throw the puck on net from center ice" you'll be benched which is why noone does it. And looking at the # of shots is better than completely disregarding the stats like you do. We don't all haave the time/inclination/ability to do what the Bruins people are doing
