Size really isn't a factor if the player in question is strong enough, strong-willed enough, and has the other requisite skills. Mattias Tedenby wasn't too small. I haven't seen them play so I'll keep an eye on them. Just glancing at their profiles, they both seem really small, Sanford 5'8, 165, Cox 5'8, 164. That's smaller than Tyler Johnson 5'9, 182 who definitely seems like the exception when it comes to undersized guys going undrafted and making it. Both Sanford and Cox are still draft eligible though. Thanks, I saw some of their highlights and they were dominant out there. But for someone who doesn't follow the CHL it's hard to understand why certain 20 year-old high-scoring junior players haven't been drafted and aren't ranked that highly among prospects. To me, the question is: do NHL scouts/teams underrate undersized players in general. i.e. Given a 6'0 190 lb 7/10 prospect and a 5'9 175 lb 8/10 prospect, how often out of ten times does any given NHL team take the undersized player over the bigger player? It might be oversimplifying, but the question is still relevant. I don't presume to know the answer, but logic, and a hunch tells me: yes, more often than not, teams will take the slightly lesser skilled bigger player. I'm not worried about Merrill in the long term. At worst, I can see him becoming another Fayne (which is a good thing), but I think his ceiling's slightly higher. Kerfoot's injury and limited number of games played concern me a bit. I'm not sure what his chances are at becoming an NHL player as just looking at his and Travis Zajac's draft seasons in the BCHL, Travis tore up that league to the tune of nearly 2ppg and Kerfoot posted a more pedestrian 1.3ppg. It's too bad he's missed a fair amount of time over the past 3 years. I like his offensive skills, my concerns for him are staying healthy and being able to find time and space at the next level playing against physically stronger players. He wasn't fast or smart enough (or strong enough). I think that the actual height/weight are are usually slightly embellished in most cases. 5-9 180 lbs is really 5-7 155 lbs. You have to remember, smaller statured guys have been playing against "giants' since they're peewee's. They learn how to go "through" a Chara (albeit not easy). Henrik Samuelsson - 50 games 10 goals 25 points AHL Brock McGinn - 50 games, 10 goals, 19 points AHL Chris tierney - 26 games, 7 goals, 24 points AHL Scott Kosmachuk - 50 games, 11 goals, 18 points AHL Charles Hudon - 53 games, 12 goals, 45 points AHL In 70 games you get an average of 40 points, 15 goals. That seems about right.
