NJDevs Fantasy Hockey '14-15

Recommended Posts

If you've played Fantasy Hockey here before, it's going to be somewhat tweaked from the standard format this year (not scoring-wise though, and we're still doing Yahoo!), though I'm sure some of you have been expecting this based on my posts in the prior season thread.  Having twenty active teams in a non-keeper league is a bit unrealistic - it's also unrealistic to have a keeper league with frequent turnover every year - so I figured if we have to reduce the number of teams we might as well increase the roster spots and make it more like an NHL roster.

So instead of the 20 teams, 18-man rosters we've had in the past (360 total players rostered plus IR's), this year we're trying a 14 team-league with 23-man rosters (322 total players rostered plus IR's). Not only will there be 23-man rosters but we'll have four starters at Center, four starters at LW, four starters at RW, six starters on D and one starter in goal...i.e. exactly like an NHL roster.  The only other roster change I made is increasing the # of IR slots to five - IR spots are unlimited in real hockey and they should be in fantasy too, but five is the max Yahoo allows.

If you're signing up and haven't played before it's a rotisserie scoring system with ten skater categories (Goals, Assist, Points, +/-, PP Points, SH Points, Game-winning goals, Faceoff wins, Hits and Blocks) along with four goalie categories (Wins, GAA, Save Pct and Shutouts).  You get points relative to your rank in each category - i.e. if you're tops in goal-scoing you get 14 points for that and so on...if you're last you get one point.  You also have an 82-game limit at each position, so for your forwards you'll be able to play 328 games at C, LW, RW (4*82) and 492 games on D (6*82) to go along with your 82 goalie games.

I sent out invites to the eight top finishers from last year (besides me) since nobody else from 10-20 had multiple moves or seemed very active.  So that's nine spots IF everyone signs back up.  If you are one of the aformentioned teams, check your e-mail that you used for the league last year since I just sent the invites out.  Ideally let me know if you choose to decline, if you don't sign up within a couple weeks I'll open the spot up for someone else.  Manta wants back in this year, so that would be ten...leaving at least four spots left - probably more if not everyone re-joins - for people that want a fantasy challenge that mirrors reality!  Just PM me and I'll send you the league ID# and password.

As usual we're having a live draft - currently I have it scheduled for Sunday October 5 at 8 PM (I checked, it's not a Jet or Giant game).  I wanted to have it as close to the season as possible but also on a weekend - but I'm usually busy Saturday nights and I suspect most are, so figured Sunday after football would be better.

Since there are limited spots available I suggest if you aren't going to be very active and/or can't make the live draft then don't sign up, ideally I don't want dead teams before February this year :P  I also suggest for those that are signing up if you have any suggestions, rule tweaks, issues with the draft date or whatever - we still have a few weeks before the season to debate them so post here.

Time for some puck!

You already got your draft position choice and paper banners, you need paper trophies too? :P

I have been the Federer to your Nadal for too long, I'll have to try and fix that this year

(that does remind me...ayl as the defending champ - again - gets to pick his draft position, which is the reward for winning the league.  Everyone else's spot gets randomized in the snake draft)

I don't know how to fix that atm since you didn't sign up with the e-mail that was linked to it.  It's not really a big deal since there's no keepers and the year-by-year history still gets displayed anyway.

Bolded is is a biggie though.

Everyone's welcome, but please - if you're going to do the draft and never look at your roster again maybe this isn't the right league for you.

Not really if enough people have an issue with it but like I said I'd rather it be as close to the season as possible without conflicting with a Devils preseason game in case people want to go - I won't be in all likelihood.  The 2nd and 4th are home preseason games.  I don't really want to ask people to stay home on a Friday night (the 3rd).  Tuesdays aren't any good for me so the 7th is out.  Monday's the only other day right before the season where it could work but I figured Sunday night > weekday night as far as draft attendance, and there's no Jet/Giant conflict at night.

Four spots left now and no outstanding invites pending so whoever else wants in PM me or post here...still got two and a half weeks left before the draft.

I'm not a big fan of expanding the IR slots to 5 because of stashing.    If we have 5 spots, can we enforce that once a player is off IR status, you must put him into your lineup/bench, and not just leave him in the spot for a rainy day?

I just figured since we are going 'real-life' with roster size/construction this year, then we might as well go real-life with IR too since there is unlimited IR on an NHL roster (there can't be in Yahoo so five IR's are the max).  AFAIK if you have players on IR that aren't IR-eligible you can't pick up players in FA or make trades, so there isn't really much of an advantage to stashing for any extended length of time.

Plus with only four bench spots on a twenty-three man roster (because of the nineteen starters) roster flexibility would be a b*tch if you have a bunch of guys hurt at once and more limited IR.

if theres still a spot, i'll join

Okay, three spots left.

I guess so... I always think worst case there.

Are we definitely pushing for 14... or would we settle on whatever we get?

Honestly I'm only saying 14 so the talent pool's similar to prior years where we had twenty teams (20 teams x 18 man rosters = 360 players; 14 teams x 23 man rosters = 322 players).  A slight overall difference but part of it will be made up in goaltenders and IR subs imo, with an 82-game limit and one goalie spot you likely won't need to roster more than two, maybe three goalies but that's pushing it since you need backups for forward and defense too...having two of your four bench spots devoted to backup goalies isn't a great use of assets.  With the smaller league there should be more goalie availability; in the last few years almost every goalie with a pulse was rostered cause it was so hard to get up to your limit with not every team having two legit starters, especially with bigger benches then.

If we had to do less teams I'd be fine with that too, but might as well shoot for 14 since we still have a week and a half and only three spots left to hit that mark.  I do think this current group of 11 will play it out for the most part, and I'd rather not force the issue if the other three players are just going to draft to fill the numbers and leave their team desolate :P
