2015 Draft Thread

"It is a very good draft. I think it's a question of getting a player who is the right player for you," Conte stressed. "And there are three our four defensemen that are big, mobile and skilled. And there is elite goal-scoring like (Dylan) Strome and (Timo) Meier. Big strong guys like (Lawson) Crouse and (Pavel) Zacha. There is everything. It's what is right for our team."

Someone hold me

Part of me refuses that the Devils would pick a defenseman at this point, unless a draft-day trade is made to acquire a young forward.

The other part realizes that this is Conte we're talking about, and he'll draft (what he feels is) BPA, no matter what Shero does.

Lou has said in the past couple of years that the Devils strategy has been to draft forwards unless they feel there's a defenseman that's too good to pass up at a particular spot, especially in the earlier rounds.  That's almost exactly what he said when he explained selecting Josh Jacobs.  He or Conte said something similar about Severson.

Based on what Conte's quotes in the article, it sounds like an absolute certainty that the Devils will select Hanifin if he's available at number 6 unless Shero can work out a trade of the pick, which I would be fine with based on Hanifin's reputation.

The frightening thing, reading the tea leaves anyway, is that right below "elite scorers" Conte is expressing a preference for "big strong guys."  That strategy has proven to be pretty terrible as of late.

Scuttlebutt on Hockey (Sirius/XM) is that Boston might trade/exchange (draft pick) Dougie Hamilton, (going to get a nice payday). And they would trade down to get  Hannafin.

Part of me hope it's posturing so a team like SJ, CBJ or Colorado make a play for Provorov at 6 and give us more assets. I'd be ok with one of Rantanen, Barzal or Zacha if we move down. I personally prefer Barzal but I'd be ok with one of the other two.

I forget where I read it but there was a rumor that CBJ would be interested in leapfrogging the Flyers because there was talk they might want Provorov.  It does seem like there are a few prospects that are going 6 through 10.  If Shero doesn't see that much of a difference, he definitely should get the extra prospect.

Why can't he fire Conte? The guy is so lackluster when it comes to drafting offense. One bust after another...

we've brought it up before but conte and his team have scouted these guys so much that at this point you might as well take advantage of it. Fire him after the draft if you want Edited by Onddeck

it should have been handled long ago. Conte has been terrible for long enough. Now were in a really though spot.

That been said this draft is so deep that i really want to believe that ANY GUY we'd pick at 6 will be a good pick. Kind of like any pick in 2003 would have been a good pick. So even if he gets us a good guy this summer... i'd still want him out.

o don't get me wrong I want him gone too, track record is horrendous. I was just saying that why Shero didn't fire him when he got the job

If the Devils want a guy or see value in Timo Meier they absolutely need to take advantage of needy or hungry teams for a particular player they may not value and trade down from 6. He's an intriguing guy but he's not a Top 10 guy.

I'm surprised to see all of the freaking out over his comments, I took it as posturing - "We could totally take a defenseman here guys, better make it worth our while if you want one of em" kinda deal.

Of course, I COULD also see us drafting a defenseman...

Really I'd just like Mitch Marner to just fall to us, but that's probably far too much to ask.

Marner could be there, they'll still take a d man.

That quote is scary, but Conte also made some comments after last year's draft that the players he chose were mostly complementary, and not the types you build a franchise around. That's the one thing that is keeping me optimistic here. I still have no interest in Crouse.

I'm at a point now where I'll be frustrated if the Devils do not select Barzal at 6, unless Marner and/or Hanifin are available (I suppose a few others like Rantanen and Zacha could be decent picks too). I'm not even sure Strome is a better pick than Barzal, to be honest. Plus I would hate to see him go to Philly to be mentored by Giroux.

We are gonna draft Meier and the board will explode in madness.

Even more scary, in that Conte piece, he doesn't bring up Barzal at all. Bringing up fvcking Meier over Barzal is insanity, god forbid we draft someone that should go 12-15 with our 6th overall.

Doesn't the GM have the last say?

Reminds me of the Joe Morrow/Brandon Saad story. Supposedly the scouting team in Pittsburgh were set on taking Saad at the end of the first round, but Shero decided he needed a defenseman and took Joe Morrow who hasn't become anything at the NHL level. Let's hope nothing like this happens with NJ.

Conte has been bad at drafting forwards, but he has revamped the back end. Before you anoint Shero, as a drafting genius, take a look at his record, it is probably his weakest aspect.

No one's anointing Shero a "drafting genius", he's a general manager. It's a large chunk of the scouting team that needs to be revamped; and if you don't agree with that based on our last 10 years' track record, I don't know what to tell you. This has very very little to do with Ray Shero.

Fair enough, but when you weigh the successes and upsides against his overall body of work (a lotttt of failures) over the past 10 years, I'm not saying he should be instantly fired, but his job should be under some scrutiny. He should be walking on egg shells at this point and this draft should pretty much seal whether he's still working here in a year or two or not.

When you average out the Devils' scouting department's successes and failures over a 10 year span, I would say we've done a bottom 5-10 worst job drafting/scouting in the league.

And I'm willing to concede, like you said, Ray Shero's track record at the draft table isn't great either. But with two very capable minds of Shero and Lamoriello as GM and President, I don't see why we shouldn't think they can hire someone better sooner than later.
