GDT: Devils vs Sharks (10/18) Home Opener

Wish I could've seen more of the arena upgrades/changes, but what I did see, I liked. Was great to just be in the building again to watch Devils hockey. The 3D show was cool...not mind-blowing, but cool just the same.

I liked the new goal song too. Not bad at all. I have no idea how the YS issue ever gets resolved. There's enough fans that insist on keeping it going for reasons of their own.

As for the result...I wasn't too high after 3-0-0, and I'm not too low now that they're 3-2-0. I had them in the 92 to 95 point range if everything breaks favorably. And though the Devils scored those 11 goals in their first two games, they're still probably a lower middle-of-the-pack team offensively. At least they fought back last night, though the balance of the first two periods were hard on the eyes.

And yeah...stating the obvious here, but Sal is very hard to take. Good lord.

I really don't see how the rookies can be that much worse than Salvador. He has a career +/- of -6, holds a -2 rating this season and has played one full season his entire career.  I'd rather take the lumps of the young kids learning the PK on the job.  We know what we have with Sal and it's not good.

He has been on the ice for the majority of the PPGA.  I'm just baffled that this guy wears the C in NJ.

Can't really look at plus/minus when Sal takes a lot of PK minutes. That's why it's not a great stat, you're punished for being one of the more reliable guys on D who the coach trusts with PK time

So has Andy Greene. They play the most PK time, so they will be out there for the most PPGA. Everyone wants the kids to take their lumps, but then in 3 weeks we'll hear about how bad Merril is because he's always out there for goals against. It's going to take time. They have been slowly increasing Severson's ice time, and Sal's has been going down, so clearly the coaches are changing things.

PK time does not count for +/- ratings, it's for even strength play.  He's been a liability defensively throughout his career.

You can get a + on a PK if you're on for a short-handed goal for (and a - on the PP if your team allows a SH goal).

Went to the game last night and like others, I was really impressed with the updates that I saw.  Didn't have a chance to tour the lower level but the uppers looked fantastic. There was a lot of different foods to be had but I eventually settled for the BBQ burger, which was really good.  Not sure if they were understaffed but it took over ten minutes from the time I paid to when I got the food....oh well.

The 3D presentation was cool but I think they can do a bit more with it.  Can dig the new goal song even though it (along with other music) was played too loud. It's a shame the YS crowd has to ruin in for everyone else. Considering how much the new owners have invested in remodeling a 7 year old arena and bringing in local and fresh(er) food options + actually marketing the team, some of the fan reaction is embarrassing. Don't understand the affinity for YS especially when you factor in that the chant didn't even originate in NJ.

Re: the crowd; was really loud during the presentation and player introductions, but there were plenty of lulls. It's not like the Devils gave us much to cheer about the first half of the game. There was a really good Bowman's chant in the first, though. In the third the crowd really came alive and there were some awesome "Cory!" chants before and after the penalty shot. If the Devils could've gotten an equalizer the Rock would've erupted. I think the statement, "The place is turning too corporate" is untrue.  My section (119) was plenty loud and into the game and it seemed like the rest of the crowd was engaged as well.

Onto the game:

-Schneider was mostly solid and didn't have a chance on the first two. The third one was a clunker but he gave the team a chance when he stopped the penalty shot. You expect him to be a bit better, but he'll be fine.

-Severson and Greene once again handled their assignments at ES. Severson added three shots and his ability to get shots through is going to be a major + for this team

-Top two lines crushed it as well, especially 23-19-68. Cammalleri continues to be an animal with 7 shots and his goal was a beauty. One-timing a puck while skating close to full speed is pretty impressive. Like Brunner's game as well.

-Henrique line was meh but it was nice to see them cash in. I thought Clowe was good in the NZ with the puck.

-4th line was once again a mess. I think JJ should come in for Tootoo and they should roll 15-16-11.

-Granted, Larsson isn't a star or anything, but he has to be banging his head against a wall watching Salvador and Gelinas try to play defense. If he doesn't draw in against the Rags then Idk.

Now you're re-writing history. Sal had a very long run of being a stable defensive defenseman before slowing down the last few years. He was a major cog when he came over in the Janssen trade, and through his next contract. The last couple of years he's slowed down considerably, but to suddenly say he wasn't good defensively throughout his career is just wrong.

Carter took plenty of bad penalties. Also I liked how in last night's game Tootoo's 'penalty' was called after the fight happened. DeBoer was quite pissed and should've been.

As soon as they replayed it on the screen I told my girlfriend they were gonna add a interference penalty. It was the right call.

right call, bullsh!t way to call it.  they were not calling a penalty initially and the linesman cannot give his interpretation of minor penalties.

Salvador has a long history of being a 3rd pairing breakeven sort of guy who can kill penalties.  Then for some reason he got promoted when he was 35 years old to play more ice time, and we're still at that level despite the fact that he is 38 years old.  Now I think part of that is how NJ uses their penalty killers, but they are going to have to reexamine this - I don't think they can have 3 defensemen eating the majority of the PK time anymore.

Seven seasons ending with a negative +/- rating, five with a +, that's hardly rewriting history.  His best season defensively was our last Cup run. If anything he has consistently been a liability and consistently inconsistent.

Bottom line: Sal is sh!t. We need to dress 7 defensemen and possible cut Sal down to a max of 14 minutes per game. Every time I watch the game it seems like he's out on the ice for every other shift.

I wouldnt mind this at all. Sit Tootoo and rotate Zubrus Henrique and Clowe in the fourth line.
