What is wrong with our fanbase

Recommended Posts

My first thought, exactly. Thank you.

I'm still not convinced William isn't a troll. This is the second time he's made sweeping generalizations about how bad our fanbase is, yet he's the one mostly contributing with garbage comments and posts like this.

Devils fans are passionate. All fans are FANATICS. Nothing's wrong with our fanbase.

Also - way to generalize our fanbase by a few posters on a message board. A+ effort.

Nah billy boy has been here a while

did you just start a threat this past week about ousting our new owners over some stupid goal song?  seems childish yes

Couple that with a very large 30 & younger crowd who aren't used to the Devils losing, and losing this much. There was always an expectation (bordering on entitlement) of winning.  The Devils wer

I can attest to this. I'm only 27 and losing has been such a strange and unexpected feeling. I taught myself only late last season to take hockey now with a grain of salt or you'll end up stressed out and angry a lot over the course of the year.

I'm part of that crowd, too. I'm 28 and early 2000's me was cruising along as a Yankees, Devils and Nets fan.

So much so that I kind of expected a rough patch to come along because things were going TOO well. That helped soften the blow a little.

I'm naturally a cynical person, but I trained myself to be a glass half full kind of fan. Otherwise watching sports can feel too much like a chore when things aren't going well.

Seeing as the Dolphins are the only other sports team that I live and die with (I like the Mets and if I have a baseball team, it would be them- but I'm not a die-hard Mets fan, much more of an observer who roots for the Mets), the Devils were always the ying to the Dolphins' yang... Now they both suck, so I'm in a constant state of annoyance and disappointment lol.

at least in NY (Real NY, the city and LI) its mets jets islanders, and rangers, giants yankees.  Then there's me as a devils fan, but sadly a mets and jets fan.

and as many have pointed out before, the guy who starts the fire hugh thread saying management sucks, asks whats wrong with the fanbase.  YOU ARE WHATS WRONG WITH THE FANBASE, and other "fans' like you, who just all happen to be babies who are upset with the goal song change and feel the need to add you suck just bc thats the only chant you can comprehend.

No, i started a thread involving the President of the Prudential Center who  panders towards a family friendly atmosphere when a great deal of the sport involves a large amount of physical contact and some violence.

So there should be an equal amount of physical contact & violence in the stands, and throw in chanting vulgarities and general rudeness.

What a business model.  Sign me up for 41 games of that.  :doh1:

I'm a New Jersey-first fan:

* Devils

* Giants (If they'd switch to the N.J. name, I'd root for them as hard as the Devs)

* Jets (If they'd switch to the N.J. name, I'd root for them as hard as the Devs)

* Nets (I used to root for them until they moved to Brooklyn)

* Red Bulls (If they'd switch to the N.J. name, I'd root for them as hard as the Devs, but because they never played in N.Y. and still choose to use the N.Y. name, they're below the Nets in my book)

* Don't like baseball

I am 24 and a Devils, Giants, and Yankees fan. Obviously I am spoiled since I have seen all my teams win multiple championships but I understand these things don't last and every team will have their ups and downs. I feel like this Devils team has potential so I will be upset if they miss the playoffs. But the previous two years I was not upset at all because those rosters with a an old mediocre goalie just was not good.

Geez!  I cannot say anything because I will be accused of saying the same thing ad nauseum re: impatience, youth, privileged. Glad I am not the only one anymore or was I ever?  It's about time others spoke out.  :)

I've given up my season tickets for three other local teams for one reason - can't deal with the fans and their antics.  And while a lot of it does come from the fanbase with those three traits, I do have to say it's not limited to the younger generations.  There are a-holes of all ages who act out.

It's really to the point where the only place I care to watch a game is at home.

I wasn't referring to youth regarding age.  I mean youth as in maturity level. Sorry. I should have been more specific. :)

The Devils lost last night, but it wasn't the result of a structural flaw, or because the team is too slow as many have quipped in the past. Their undoing was the result of mental lapses, which can be addressed, and Cory Schneider's subpar play. Goal 1 and 3 are inexcusable for a goaltender that is supposed to be in his prime.

Our biggest weakness last year, which was our inability to score is no longer present. The Devils last night scored a SHG and two 5 on 5 goals. These are positive stats despite the overall outcome. Defensively we are a work in progress, but 4 of 7 defenseman on the roster are under 23 years of age. Nights like this are to expected, but they should decline the deeper we get into the season.

Perennial whipping boy Stephen Gionta played well last evening, and is well suited for a 4th line wing role. Salvador is an issue, but he won't be scratched for two reasons. First, no one else on the roster plays a similar style to his, and two, he has a lot of cachet because he is the captain.

Nights like this will be common till around game 35 or so. After that the Devils will play .600 hockey going forward and make the playoffs as long as long as Cory plays to his capability.

Bravo on this post.

People try too hard in order to NOT sound like homers, so they overcompensate by over exaggerating the flaws and anything bad going on with the team.  In doing so, they claim they're being realistic when they're not being realistic at all.

That being said, I'm not against firing Pete.

As a Devils/Yankees/Chargers fan, the only thing I've become accustomed to the past few years is hating my coach (DeBoer, Girardi, Norv Turner til his firing).

What fanbase? According to the media all hockey fans are either NYR, PITT, PHI, DET, CHI,BOS or LAK fans.

Right? Like that stupid 'Rivalry Night' sh!t. I think the next 'Rivalry Night' game is Detroit-Washington. Yeah HUGE rivalry there. It should actually be called 'NBC Manufactured Rivalry Night'.

Generally speaking, I've stopped defending our attendance numbers. Our fans don't care enough to spend money and go to games, and the building's been empty so far this year and chunks of last year, and so damn quiet. We have no excuses, no NY teams in the MLB Playoffs, our football teams are garbage.

We deserve every bit of ridicule we get over our attendance. We're only a very small step up above some of the failing Southern/Western expansion teams in that regard.

Personally I have no interest in baseball or basketball and if I never watched another one of those games again I could care less.

Football wise I'll watch the Jets and Giants but I don't lose sleep over them.

For me it's really just the Devils and Red Bulls and Team USA in soccer.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this but I'm also a huge racing fan, if it has engines and wheels I'll watch it. NASCAR, Indy Car, Formula 1, NHRA, supercross, motocross, moto gp. I watch it all, I probably watch more racing than anything else.

I watch Formula 1, but that has never and will never force me to choose to watch either that or the Devils so it's not an issue for me. I'll occasionally watch other racing, Indy cars, sports car, anything that isn't NASCAR or other oval track racing, which I've always thought was boring and could never get into it.

This. Throw in Stoke and Rayo Vallecano in Europe.

I used to love the Yankees, now I like them, but philosophically, I prefer the approach of a guy like Lou, who knows how to build talent without throwing a ton of money around, then the Yankees, and much as Yankees will always be my team, I'll watch fewer than half the games at this point. I tried to stop watching football, because I don't like the way the NFL has handled concussions, and realized I actually didn't miss it that much. I guess I'd rather the Giants win than anyone else, but I don't actually care. Knicks are my basketball team, but I don't have time to watch all the Devils games, so chances of me taking another winter sport seriously are pretty low. It's too bad because I actually like basketball, and I have a ton of time to watch games in the summer, being a teacher.

What about the Cup run and 2013 when the place was filled up almost every game? The product has been poor since then so it's not surprising. Why pay out the butt to watch a boring, at BEST mediocre squad vs the Winnipeg Jets on a weeknight?
