Corporate Logos coming to NHL Jerseys

Recommended Posts

Did the NHL just put one or two logos on the boards and leave it be? No they covered every inch

Though the ice has had the 4 neutral zone ads for a while now.

So it could go either way. I could definitely see the NHL becoming like Euro Leagues. I don't think it will happen....but there will be more ads on jerseys than you think

Nhl will get greedy IMO. At least, with Soccer, their are NO commercials. Knowing the NHL they will have logos on jerseys and still have all these commercials smh

And really as Mike said. Not a huge deal really.

It will never turn into what the European leagues look like. It sucks for sure, but it's not a huge deal imo.

Absolutely awful... I don't see why this is being done,  the NHL already has a huge advantage for corporate stenciling with sponsorships/rights deals on the; Ice, Boards, Zambonis, behind the benches, the penalty boxes, and even CGI on the Glass behind the goals.

Besides NASCAR's ridiculous corporatism, I think the only sporting event that tops NHL arenas/stadium logo posting is New Years Day 'Capital One Bowl' which is a record for a single sponsor's logos within a venue.

Just awful Gary Bettman... and the NHL is registered as a "Non Profit" tax status.

They are also starting to put those CGI ads on the side boards-glass by the bluelines now as well.  I saw an optimum ad during the Rags broadcast last night on the side glass, with a Chase ad behind the nets.  It's just a matter of time before the entire glass is covered in ads much like the boards have been.  The jerseys won't be too far behind if the money is right.

The way the Devils are playing this season, an appropriate sponsor would be "ALWAYS MAXI PADS"...

Lou would only allow Panera Bread and Welches Squeezable Jelly to appear on a Devils jersey.

Yeah cause that will cause fans to walk away.

Fans of the premier league sure revolted when Barclay's sponsored their ENTIRE league. NASCAR fans sure stay away cause of corporate logos.

I really have to wonder WHY we need corporate sponsorship league wide...is the league doing that bad, or is it just a huge money grab?

If it helps to make the game accessible to more people via lower ticket prices or television subscription packages, certainly, it's worth it.  But if it's just a bit to make the NHL more money without sharing it with the "low guys on the totem pole," then no, I'm not for it.

Remember, we're gonna have to buy the jerseys for these teams that have the advertisements on them.  Thus promoting the advertised company even more.

We have a say in this...

HA. The NHL is not going to lower prices.  That is some of the BS Bettman was spewing during the 2004-05 lock-out. Saying cost certainty was needed for the owners AND for the fans.

It will be interesting to see how this will be implemented. Will teams have a choice? I can see Leafs or Wings ownership not being in favour of something like this, for example, whereas other owners may think it's a great way to add revenue without giving up to much. And will the money be distributed collectively or does each team keep their share of the ad revenue?

If Florida wants to stick ads on their jerseys to make a few bucks, more power to them. But I fear the NHL will share the revenue among all it's owners which is problematic for me. I don't see why the well-run and successful teams (and their fans in this case because I would assume all owners would have to agree to something like this) should have to compromise in order to fund perennial charity cases.

This is going to be an issue.  Different teams space will be worth more than others.  The Leafs would probably be the most valuable with the Panthers as the least.  Is this going to be some kind of league wide deal where every team has the same advertisements?  Is the money going to the individual teams?  Or, going to a central fund to be distributed equally?  If it is the latter, it is the type of thing that could keep the Panthers in Florida rather than moving them to Quebec or another much better market.

I really have to wonder WHY we need corporate sponsorship league wide...is the league doing that bad, or is it just a huge money grab?

Money grab.  Look at the NFL.  Their revenues are $9B????  Right now, they have people trying to figure out how to grow that to $9,000,000,001.

I think the best way to do this is to have each team given the choice of what ad and then have that money go to a central fund split amongst the teams either evenly or in a way that favors the struggling teams more.

Ok, but what happens when Toronto is offered a King's ransom but decides they only want one logo.  Florida makes their uniform look like a Nascar suit.  Is the league going to vote to plaster every team?  Kind of like Hard Knocks in the NFL.  When they first started doing it, the deal was that teams had the right to turn it down.  Well, when less teams were willing to do it, and the league realized they could lose the money, they changed the rule stating teams COULD be forced to do it.

I was suggesting this under the impression that the league would have only approved ads to be placed in certain places, if not only one spot. If there's a team that outright refuses to place ads on the jersey, then they are left out of the revenue sharing from the profits on the ads.

Why not?? I mean, you hardly notice it in Europe!!

jokerit_gaolie2.jpg

(And yes, I realize that pic seems to have some photoshop)

What I don't see anything there besides the team logo..... Except for the BLINDING ARRAY of corporatism....

Good lord I hope it is PSed. Otherwise that is the most hideous display of money grubbing, corporate whoring I have ever seen (in the past 24 hours).

BTW, in all seriousness, this sh!t needs to end. I used to love baseball in addition to football and hockey. Then they went on strike and ARod signed that 1/4 billion $ contract. That was it for me. No person playing a damn game is worth that. What's more, this is no longer about players getting a fair share of revenues. The players and owners are essentially competing and/or colluding to rip off the very people that support them: the fans. What's more, for decades these leagues have essentially been on public support by holding municipalities hostage to financing bigger, newer stadiums and then soaking up the revenues while avoiding the costs. It is like a miniature version of the Olympics in every American city. We've all been sold a lie saying that these sporting venues helps o revitalize our cities when, in fact, their costs far outweigh their benefits.

Anyway, I walked away from baseball 20 years ago and never looked back. I'm willing to do the same to football if they don't pull their sh!t together and, sadly, I would do the same to the NHL. I love these games, but I won't support them bankrupting cities, pricing the common person out of the stadium or to pay ever rising ticket prices, and then, to top it off, we need to look at the already overpaid players shilling for the corporate sponsors of the luxury boxes that used to be set aside for seating for "normal" people. There is just no need to this....

Sorry for the rant.

Yea, I'll pass. Maybe I'm just not "hardcore" enough, but with the pricing of these jerseys and sweater and other sports paraphernalia it is just ridiculous.

Man, I'm a real grinch today.
