Hockey blogger fired over creepy DMs

Remember Steve Lepore? He got himself in big trouble over the weekend. Sad state of affairs.

According to the Storify, Lepore removed his writing credits from his Twitter profile. His author page for SB Nation directs to a 404 error page. Rolling Stone and Sirius XM have yet to make statements, but Awful Announcing, which covered a similar story involving former Yahoo Sports writer Harrison Mooney, quickly announced that it cut ties with Lepore.

Yeesh.

I'm hesitant to take anyone seriously (at first) who declares themselves a feminist on twitter (because, if you haven't noticed, Tumblr is bleeding into other social media outlets) but yikes.  Some of those messages were cringy.

Stupid.  Why anyone 'flirts' with strangers over the internet, where everything can be logged and shared, is beyond me.

Flirting is one thing....based on the screen shots (which also can be taken slighlty out of context, except for the fact that he apparently did to have the hockey loving female twitter universe)....he went wayyy past the line of harmless flirtatious comments.....its sad how the more tied into the internet people get, the less they treat people like PEOPLE when they interact with them.....

It's a sharp observation. I also notice how dopey and naive some of these girls are. They don't see what's coming until the guy asks them for a bra-and-panty photo session ... or until he pulls an Anthony Weiner.

I knew that name sounded familiar.  He posted here didn't he?

DevilsDude5030 or something along those lines. He was the first to call out that behaviour on twitter too. Already some more hockey people getting called out for their sh!t (Adrian Dater of the Denver Post today). Wouldn't shock me if more were outed.

He was def creepy and lame but do they have to put his pathetic attempts on full blast to the world? Isn't there an ignore button on twitter, or can't they just reply back 'please don't message me anymore'? You're gona publicly embarrass him and have him lose his job? And then to make it a feminism thing about how they are 'targets'...

There were apparently dozens and dozens of people harassed. The guy is a creep that made people uncomfortable. It's an issue when any woman covering or has any interest in hockey needs to be asked to be photographed naked or exposed to someone's junk.

If this behaviour is commonplace in the industry in any way, it should be acknowledged. and brought to public.

You are acting like this never happened with beat writers years ago. They travel from city to city and hotel to hotel. Of course many of them would go down to the hotel bar or club around the corner to pick up women and they probably said things to them that are the same or not far off from what these guys are saying. To believe this is new is very naive.

While he is a creeper, I've seen A LOT worse pretty at various bars I've been to over time. Pretty much every instance the woman either ignores the guy or tells him to fvck of and almost every time that's the end of it.

These women know they can just ignore or block his messages. It's pretty simple and if you don't know how to do it then you can easily Google on how block people's messages either on Twitter, FB or via text. Instead these women decided to try to make a name for themselves by humiliating him while screaming "girl power" while doing it. This is the exact same situation with that porn star and Del Zotto. I can imagine she or someone close to her could have told her where the ignore button was but instead they chose to keep receiving these messages to later use against the guys.

Again not saying dater or Lepore acted appropriately but the women could have stopped them equally as much as by doing it quietly.

LOL talk about sexist. Jesus fvcking Christ.

You don't get it.  Blaming ANY of these women is tantamount to supporting harassment. Its none of their faults they were subjected to this by a creeper. Your assumption about the ignore button and that they chose to keep getting info to help bury the guy is absolutely awful. Think about what the hell you're saying about women in this respect.

This guy used his position as a supposed "well known voice" in the hockey world and blatantly used it to hit up women and then slowly tried to turn the conversations to get them to pose for photos for his own personal wank bank.

Of course its different in person and in bars. How many guys do you know are too chickensh!t to ever walk up to a woman and talk to them like a normal human  being? He used Twitter to act as a buffer so he didnt have to put himself out there. He's a chickensh!t troll and deserves everything that is happening to him right now.

Getting called sexist from a guy who had a woman in a bikini in his avatar for the longest time is really funny as well.

You seem to act surprised that a guy in power used his position to assert himself over the other sex like it is something new and has never happened before. How many women have been DRAWN to guys in power before just because they have power (or money for that matter). If you think just by asking a women for nude pics is harassment then i bet law enforcement will be busy until the end of time with filing complaints against men who have harassed women over the Internet. The difference in this case is that these women knew this guy was famous so they decided to humiliate him in front of the public. If it was Joe Schmo off the street asking any of these women for nudes, the guy would be put on ignore and forgotten by these women almost immediately.

As for the Internet acting as a buffer, well duh. Everyone uses it as a buffer and again you are acting like he and only perverts use it in that fashion. Hell legit dating websites like OK Cupid and Match depends on guys being too nervous to approach women in public to keep themselves in business. Yet however, I guess you seem to think that again only the perverts and creepers are the ones doing that.

Man your arguments are weak. Yes, I find women attractive. That's hardly sending PMs out to the female members and asking for nude photos.

I am not surprised whatsoever at this nor am I surprised when it happens with anyone in public eye. You're trying to make a disgusting argument that these women banded together and decided to do this as some sort of conspiracy and make THEM out to be the one at fault here. Most women aren't going to go around bragging that John Doe was harassing them, but when they see that others are getting the same exact treatment that made them feel the same way, people want to speak out and say yep, this was happening to me too. Oh poor Steve Lepore. His acting like a douchebag was outed and he lost his cush gig. Cry me a river.

And uh, yeah. Asking women for nude photos when its not wanted is harassment. Harassment isn't always a punishable crime and for a lot of victims, its more EMBARRASSING than anything to begin with. Read the one girl's timeline about how nervous she was with having to explain all of this to her family when it got published. But yeah, all her fault that one douchebag was using his position in the public eye as a vehicle to be a perv.

Lol that's rich. Again I never said what these guys did was right. In fact I said more than once that these guys acted inappropriately.

However, you as well as these women are trying to build this narrative that these guys are would-be rapists in waiting with far reaching powers with their celebrity (and I use celebrity VERY loosely with these two but you seem to think they are ones in position of power so whatever ) who are threatening them if they don't send them nude photos.

I see it as a couple of dorks who are using the Internet to score with chicks but in an inappropriate way. If this is considered harassment then you might as well arrest a good chunk of the entire male population who have ever used a computer before. These women could have hit the ignore button like they do with every other guy who has sent them those kinds of messages (and if you think they have never gotten those kinds of messages before in their lives then you are completely naive).

Oh and your last part about explaining it to her family and how embarrass she was. Well if she didn't turn it into a national story by WRITING AND PUBLISHING HIS fvckING PRIVATE MESSAGES then she wouldn't have to do any explaining.

Good grief is this being overblown.

And your victim blaming is ridiculous lol. What is this narrative that you're bringing about in respect to rape? I've not read the word "rape" once today in respect to this story. Its about harassment and people in "power" or "celebrity" (yes I agree this is borderline in this respect).  This guy has no self respect or respect for women.

I suppose you think Dater getting exposed for doing the same thing (except arguably 10x more pervy since its more blatant and he is married) is perfectly fine and the women should just keep their mouths shut.

Again if these women wanted to stop these private messages they could have put them on ignore. Instead they didn't just want the messages to stop but they wanted to humiliate these dorks and force them to lose their jobs. You are acting like in the history of the Internet and social media that no guy before has ever acted inappriately and trolled for nude pictures from women before. These dorks are just doing what millions of other men have done in the past whose worst consequences (and usually the one to get them to stop) is to put them on ignore.

Also to say a couple of hack hockey bloggers, one for a local newspaper thag anyone outside of Denver cares about and the other on a fringe hockey blog, are in any sort of position of power is laughable. Again these guys are dorks and this is trying to tar and feather them for a crime that most of the guys who do that get the punishment of being put on ignore.

This is basically what feminism has evolved into today now and this is a great example. Back in the day feminists used to preach about equality and trying to do things men were able to do through hard work and atruggle. Now it seems feminism is about who can pull out the biggest victim card in each situation.

You REALLY like to argue for the sake of arguing, don't you?

What's the problem you really have here...that the women somehow entrapped these guys?  If they weren't acting like d*cks in the first place there'd be nothing to entrap.  That they were out to cost them their jobs?  If the guys weren't being stupid in the first place they wouldn't have lost their jobs period.
