Devils 2014-2015 Off Season Thread

We kind of need guys on right side/shot. JVR, Tlusty both lefties.

Also, if Lou thought so much of Conte's picks, he take a couple of them off our hands. JVR will however cost us a 1st. then again so would J. Eberle.

So evidently, a Toronto beat writer had mentioned that Shero inquired into the availability of JVR.  (Can't find a link right now unfortunately.)

Would it be worth it to take on the great bulk or perhaps Phaneuf's entire contract so that the most the Devils would have to give up would be Merrill and other pieces you can live without?

I would say yes.  The Devils are barely a floor team right now and in all likelihood won't be a cap team to the point that an albatross like Phaneuf's contract will prevent them from doing something else.  And as bad as Phaneuf's deal is, he's still an NHL caliber defenseman and probably won't be Salvador bad by the end of the deal.

EDIT:  Looks like I'm a day late on this one.... carry on.

Terrible idea. Phaneuf's contract has another 6 years on it and he's already not very good. We might very well be spending to the cap in 3-4 years. This would also be diametrically opposed to hat Shero's MO has been so far. I'd rather not have JVR if it means adding Phaneuf. People are complaining about Zajac's contract and he's still a good player, can you imagine what this board would turn into with Phaneuf on the team?

Well, I'm not one that really complains about Zajac's contract.  My view is that if you are not a cap team and don't have any real expectations of being a cap team for the foreseeable future, the fact that a particular player might be overrpaid is largely irrelevant.  It only matters when that player is taking up a roster spot for someone that's better.

So although Phaneauf's deal is obviously awful, I would think that he figures to be an NHL caliber defenseman for at least the next couple of years.  It may not look good that your highest paid defenseman by a long shot is a third pairing guy, but if it doesn't prevent the team from doing something it otherwise might be able to, and you ended up getting JVR out of it without having to give up the usual asking price, I might be able to live with it.

That said, JVR is already 26 and could soon start to experience a Ryan Kesler or even Mike Richards type decline by the time the Devils are in a position to seriously compete.  So perhaps on that basis, I'd just keep plugging along with the plan as is.

As I said, even without Phaneuf we could be a cap team in the foreseeable future. Add 7M to your cap with Phaneuf and we will certainly be a cap team within a few years. If Phaneuf had a shorter deal you might have a better argument. There's a reason he's still on the Maple Leafs. Even worse would be losing JVR in three years to UFA and still having Phaneuf for another three.

"Already 26"?!?!?! We're like  9 months removed from our best forward being 42 hahaha...

I don't have the inclination to look all that deeply into the numbers, but it seems to me that the only way the Devils could conceivably end up being a cap team in the foreseeable future, with or without having to take on an albatross contract, is if Severson is as one of the best defensemen in the league in two years, Zacha wildly exceeds expectations in three years, and one or two of the other prospects in the system do the same.  A cap crunch that's created by that scenario is not the worst problem in the world.

Phaneuf's has a 7M cap hit, JVR has a 4M cap hit. That's 11M in cap. Right now the Devils have 14M in cap room. Anyone we would be giving up in a trade wouldn't have a sizeable cap hit. So even this year it would bring us close. We'd have Phaneuf for 6 years, when we don't even really need him. The one thing you could say is that Zubrus, Ruutu, and Elias come off the cap after this year, but then again, you need to re-sign Palmieri and Severson pretty soon, along with a whole bunch of other players and along with having to fill a bunch of other roster spots. It's not that difficult to hit the cap.

In general, you don't take on contracts as long as Phaneuf's with the attitude "Well, we probably won't be a cap team for 6 years."

And that's not taking into account that JVR would likely get a pay raise in a year or two.  He's probably not going to be a 4mil cap hit either.

With Ryane Clowe unlikely to ever play again, the Devils have 18.9M in cap room.  I agree with your general point that the Devils can't just take on a giant contract like that, but there's often money in the banana stand.

I don't want JVR because ironically we actually have enough guys like him.  The Devils need play driving forwards.  They can piece together some scoring here, but those guys aren't going to get enough opportunities because no one's pushing the play into the opponents' end.  And of course this rumor was supplied by a beat writer I've never heard of from two organizations that don't leak things.

Id be fine with JVR as long as it doesn't cost Severson and please do not bring Phaneuf here. Do not want that contract.

I can't imagine that Severson would be part of that deal. Shero knows his value, and from his recent "youth" moves, I don't think he'd sacrifice that big of a piece. As others have mentionned Merril might be in the deal, but like everyone here I'd rather trade him than Severson.

Where did you see/hear this? I don't see anything anywhere.

It was a facebook post from the Toronto Sun Sports section, but I don't see it on the site and have to track it down on my phone.

Gelinas, a late pick and maybe Ruutu are what I have read

I couldn't see that being enough..but my god if we could dump rutuu and a late rounder along with gelin as which is the player I would choose to move out of all the young D we'll that would really be something..but not sure where that information is coming from because I have heard nothing about specifics

I would do that all day long. I can't imagine any way that deal, if proposed by Toronto, doesn't get done. Looking at their contracts, Ruutu and JVR have the same salary. On what planet should that be true??

Jesus christ, really?  There's no way they aren't asking for a higher pick.  If it's just for a 3rd or 4th pick, pull that trigger.

We didn't give Rutuu that contract, and since we weren't going to be a cap team for the duration of it (this season) it didn't really matter

I didn't say we gave it to him, I said those two guys should not be making the same salary. Who gave it to him or cap issues are irrelevant.
