Someone on the Devils Facebook fan page posted about this guy and the possibility of the Devils going after him. It could be worth the try given that of all teams we are most able to offer ice-time to a young scoring forward. Not sure if the fact that he plays on the same team as Kovalchuk helps or hinders us as I'm still not entirely sure just how fondly Ilya looks back on his time here, but I just figured I'd start the discussion about this guy since I hadn't seen another thread about him yet. I've never seen him play and was wondering if people had any thoughts about whether he'd be someone for us to go after.

He's not signing anywhere for a try-out deal.

Absolutely, he isn't coming for any tryout deal especially with the Devils but I think Kovy's relationship with Lou is healthy so I feel Kovy would steer Panarin to the Devils. Devils control Kovy's coming back to NHL if he wants to under the rules, so why not help the Devils  with getting a player..

Y'know it might not be a bad idea to take a gamble on bringing in both Panarin and Tikhonov. The Devils are starved for forwards this off-season more than probably any other team and even if they flop, they're probably still better than most of what we'd get on the NHL FA market.

Hey fine by me. Anything that can infuse this team with young forward talent without costing assets is something we need to be doing.

Elliotte Friedman:

Hearing free-agent F Artem Panarin, who led KHL champion St. Petersburg in scoring, is getting close to joining the Chicago Blackhawks.

Oh yeah, because why wouldn't he, right? I'm sure his option B is to sign with the Rangers...

Does Chicago know something we don't, regarding cap space? I really don't understand how they can pull it off, unless he's making league min.

Bonuses. I'm sure there's a way to circumvent the cap through bonuses somehow. Edited by MadDog2020

Panarin is only eligible for an entry-level contract - entirely possible they loaded it up with bonuses and he's only got a 950k cap hit next year.  If he joins the Hawks now and plays in a game, he loses a year off that contract, meaning he'd only have one more year under it.

Patrick Sharp is going to be gone along with probably some other people - the Hawks need cheap options to replace them, and he's definitely a cheap option.

it only goes to show that it's not always the GM, it's mostly the team, opportunities and location. Parise, suter, pominville and Vanek didnt go to Minny because Fletcher was the GM there. Iginla signed with Pittsburgh, Boston and Colorado cause he wanted to play with those players. etc etc. St-Louis, Nash, Hayes went to NYR.

Jagr and Cammalleri came here cause they knew they'd get top line minutes and wouldnt anywhere else. We get players on the downfall"with something to prove" cause they have that opportunity here too. We need to be more appealing than that in the future and for that we need better core players. NO. ONE. Wants to come to NJ to play with Zajac or Henrique. The team is bad and the city is sh!tty from what i hear. So really we have to overpay in order to get people here and thats really not the way to go.

It sucks and its a cycle, Lou has been running a succesful team for awhile and well thats it, back then he had players willing to stay here and sign here for less of fair money. Those days are gone but im not sure he realizes that.

If you've never been to Newark you should probably shut the hell up about it

He's voicing what is a popular image of Newark as to why free agents might not want to come and play there. I'm by far the biggest Newark supporter you'll ever meet, but I'm not going to tell you that playing in Newark is a key selling point for free agents. People are sold on images and perception. Unfortunately, what SD has heard about Newark is more likely to be the popular perception among most free agents who have probably never explored the city past the team bus from the airport hotel to the arena. They don't know about Cherry Blossoms in Branch Brook Park or Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound. When assessing your situation (which is what SD was doing although from a very negative standpoint) it is best to deal in realities and the reality is that Newark has a lousy reputation. If you wanted to counter his argument by raising positive reasons for free agents to sign in NJ right now, then that would be much more effective than telling a fellow poster to shut up.
