Going back to Vegas, I think the best comparison is Nashville. Rapidly growing metro area without much competition. Nashville had the advantage of a lot of auto workers from Detroit who already liked hockey moving in, but also had a football team. If Vegas is patient, they'll have fans in a generation as kids grow up, and right now will get people who like going to games, even if they root for someone else. The tourists are an interesting variable, but counting on tourists to generate income is a bad idea for a sports franchise. It will also be key to get people into hockey like Dallas did, rather than hoping it catches on magically like Atlanta or Phoenix. There's a reason southern expansion failed, and the desert isn't exactly a hockey market. Of course, they would have the advantage of being the only major league gig in town. IMO Seattle and Quebec are stronger, but Vegas could work, and since I don't see Phoenix being vible for much longer, 3 cities will probably be getting teams.

I honestly can't believe there'd be a pro team in vegas. That city is full of tourists... that have interest in other cities teams. I see this as a complete disaster

You do realize there are people who live in Vegas and the surrounding area, correct?  Or, do you think all the people who work at the casinos/hotels/cabbies/brothels are also tourists who just decided to work a few days while on vacation?

No, everyone that works in those places lives in them, duh. Everyone knows that!

We confirm that we submitted our candidacy for the #NHL expansion process in order to bring the #Nordiques back to #Québec City.

Read from the guy who runs 4thperiod, Vegas and Tukwila (Seattle) expected to submit bids. Over weekend, I had heard all Seattle groups might pass, so who knows. I'd be interested to see if the Toronto group also submits a bid.

i stand corrected.  But still, that means they live IN Vegas, no?

Interesting:

Could change at the last minute, but all signs pointing toward Toronto not submitting an expansion application before today's deadline.

No applications from Seattle either, meaning likely only applications will be received from Las Vegas and Quebec City

Hmmm,

I really liked Nordiques Nation until they came to Jersey. It was the last game of 2011 I believe, the team had made that run after starting real slow, we were playing the Bruins at home. It was our last chance to give that team a proper ovation and show them that we respected and appreciated their efforts, and these guys stormed down to the glass and lower level to carry on and make a fuss when the game ended. I thought it was classless, disrespectful, and unnecessary. They had forty other games to bus down and put on that performance.

Only 2 submitted correct?  If Quebec is one, which team moves to the West to make the conferences even?

Judging by what Bettman's said, I actually think that he'd be crazy enough to have 15/17 conferences.  Below is a quote he's said when they instituted the uneven conferences in the first place:

"Unless somebody wants to move West, and nobody wants to. Columbus and Detroit were adamant that they needed to be in the East. Unless you're really hung up on symmetry, I don't think it makes that much of a difference. It's really the teams in the middle of the pack that are competing for the playoff spots. When you get down to the bottom, whether or not there's an extra team or two, I don't think that really affects it because everybody's roughly playing the same type of schedule."

IF it happens, and remember the league never did say it was a definite, I think it is one of two things that will happen.  1) Quebec plays in the Central for the time being, like the Jets played in the Southeast. 2) Detroit or Columbus goes to the Central.   Remember, the current alignment was done as a 3 year experiment and is going to be re-visited at the end of this season.   I think the first one is more likely.   If the NHL says to Quebecor, "You can have  team, but you must play in the Central", they are going to accept faster than you can snap your fingers.  Bettman said he liked the idea of the Eastern Time Zone teams being all in the Eastern Conference, but that is not set in stone and can change.

There are rumors about Carolina, everyone knows about Arizona, and rumors about the Panthers pop up from time to time, so we shall see.

I can't see Detroit moving back to the west- they bitched and moaned for years, and Ilitch is too powerful to ever allow it. Columbus could possibly go back, which is welcome because they're going to be good, and I'd rather not deal with them in the Metro if possible. Carolina I just can't see moving- they won a Cup down there, and the fans have supported that team when they were winning. Plus, Karmanos has said he won't sell to someone who would move the franchise out of NC. Florida? Eh, maybe. They're locked into their lease until 2028, but I'd imagine that could be broken under the right circumstances. Another franchise that would probably be better supported if they'd make the playoffs more than once every 12 years. Arizona will probably be in Seattle this time next year, barring a miracle. Like I said, carolina is just a rumor and I wouldn't trust Karmanos.  He bought Hartford under the premise he would stay and couldn't wait to get out of there.  Whalers played to 95% capacity their last year and he still left.  Had some deal with the governor at the time who was very corrupt and I believe wound up serving time.  Same guy who Kraft played to get his stadium in Foxboro.  Canes have decent support, but rumors are they still lose money and it supposedly more of a casual interest way behind college bball, football, nascar.

Detroit can bitch and moan all they want.  However, if there is a plan which is voted on and 3/4 vote for an alignment which has them in the west, then they are going to be stuck with it.  I don't think Illitch is as powerful as you think anymore.  I dont think any of them are to be quite honest.

I think they all live in the Mirage. So yes.
