DevsMan84
Wow and while I do like Zubrus, this needed to be done. He has just become completely useless and his contract was going to be brutal. Wonder if now they are going to give Ruutu his ice time finally.

Daniel
Although I'll never lose sleep over someone getting paid $2 million over two years not to go to work, I feel kind of bad as he was one of those players that had a lot of loyalty to the organization and the area, and is the only free agent that I can think of that said he was hoping to end up in NJ. And there was a part of me that felt that he could have enough of a resurgence to be an effective player for a team that's not so great to begin with. But ultimately, it's not really a big deal one way or the other. There's no far superior player that he would have been keeping off the roster, and the Devils aren't going to be appreciably better or worse because of this. roomtemp
Honestly if he played out his contract or got bought out it makes no difference since I doubt we'll be in much need of that cap space next off season. Probably a way to save money on a bad team The real question is who controls the music in the locker room Edited July 29, 2015 by roomtemp

Isn't that for if a player is being bought out though? According to the tweet his contract is being "terminated." Am I right to assume this is more along the lines of what LA did with Richards last month?
SterioDesign
Shero doing everything right so far. I'm scared. Yes indeed and i'm pretty sure i remember you telling me there was no chance he'd get bought out. Obviously it was logic that he only had one year left... its a wasted season of course so why not... but this is showing that he's gonna give a chance to the kids. the Devils needed a guy like Shero like crazy. Someone who could come in and just do the right things. Not gonna pilled on Lou but we all know his loyalty, rules, methods and vision were in the way of making the right moves at times. Obviously it's gonna take awhile but i'm so relived to see these things happening. It was gonna be a long road to be successful again but making this kind of moves is certainly accelerating things. But again no to pilled on him but if Lou was still here we would have had a few more years of patching things up cause we were only 2 top 6 players away from a playoffs spot... which is ridiculous of course. I never minded Lou's rules, methods and overall vision, but his loyalty is something that certainly clouded some of his methods and vision over the years. I don't think 1990's Lou would have handed out those lifetime achievement/Thank You contracts to guys like Zubrus and Marty back then when the player was pretty much finished. Not going to lie and say there is no emotion in sports and it's dealings, but it definitely hurt Lou in the long run.
devilsrule33
Wow. I wonder how that's going to sit with long timers like Elias and Greene Does it matter? The Devils traded for Ruutu to be an upgrade over Zubrus. He always has been, but besides 15 games to start his Devil career, he found himself stuck on the 4th line. They already re-signed Tootoo. You want to give Matteau and maybe some other youngsters opportunities. There simply was no room. BTW, he is finished as a hockey player. I wrote this at the end of the year: 14:40 The amount of ice-time Dainius Zubrus somehow got to average per game this season. With it, he had 4 goals and 6 assists in 74 games. That's incredible for someone who found himself on the 4th line for only a few games. Started the year on the wonderful second line with Patrik Elias and Martin Havlat, got a chance to play on the first line with Jagr, and ended the year playing with Elias. Zubrus joins Jay McClement (last year), Travis Moen (07-08), Alex Henry (03-04), Bob Corkum (01-02) and Ian Moran (98-99), as players that averaged more than 14:30 a game and had 10 or less points (minimum 1000min). Call Dainius Zubrus a lot of things this season, but don’t call him unlucky. He went 50 games between scoring his 2nd and 3rd goal. In an extra horrible stretch after he came back from injury, Zubrus was held without a shot in 20 of the 30 games before finally scoring. During that 30 game stretch, he had just one more shot than minor penalties (14 shots to 13 minors).

I agree that Ruutu was meant to be an upgrade over Zubrus but he hasnt been terribly impressive either. Not that it matters, since we're going to be awful, but hopefully Matteau can be an effective player
Aitchmack
As much as I like Zubrus he was clearly struggling last season. Am I right in thinking that as he's over 35 his full cap hit counts this year and is off the books next season? Good planning by Shero if that is the case. Neb00rs
Sad to see because he was a great Devil, but easily seen coming. The only thing that was keeping him on the team was Lou's loyalty. Zubrus is done.

Maybe sadness for a friend going and someone else deciding when his career is over, but the facts are the facts. The Devils have missed the playoffs three straight years. Zubrus played a ton of hockey over those three years, and has been atrocious for the last year and a half.
