Neb00rs
More than anything thing this sends a message: Lou's ways are out. They cut Zubrus for no other reason but to get rid of him and make room for someone else. I suppose they save $1 million too.
John Wensink
I'm confused, if his salary stays full on cap hit this year because of 35+ is he off after this year? If so very nice. Cap hit this year is no problem.
dmann422
Thanks Dainus for everything, was a good player for us and great complimentary piece over the years. It seems like he could always adapt to whatever role we threw him in. Part of me wonders if he asked for or at least accepted this. Like others have said its likely he'd have been a healthy scratch here this year anyway. Now he can look for an opportunity to actually get playing time elsewhere (Russia?) and we're still clear from the cap floor.

Cap hit this year is no problem. Yes, the contract ends after this year. Correct, cap hit this year is the full 3.1 mil but nothing after that Per TG: The buyout will for two thirds the remaining total value ($2,0) spread out over twice the remaining years on the deal. So, the Devils will pay Zubrus $1,033,333 over each of the next two seasons. http://fireandice.northjersey.com/fire-ice-1.174987/devils-place-dainius-zubrus-on-unconditional-waivers-to-buy-out-his-contract-1.1382560 Edited July 29, 2015 by dmann422
Colorado Rockies 1976
Yes indeed and i'm pretty sure i remember you telling me there was no chance he'd get bought out. Obviously it was logic that he only had one year left... its a wasted season of course so why not... but this is showing that he's gonna give a chance to the kids. the Devils needed a guy like Shero like crazy. Someone who could come in and just do the right things. Not gonna pilled on Lou but we all know his loyalty, rules, methods and vision were in the way of making the right moves at times. Obviously it's gonna take awhile but i'm so relived to see these things happening. It was gonna be a long road to be successful again but making this kind of moves is certainly accelerating things. But again no to pilled on him but if Lou was still here we would have had a few more years of patching things up cause we were only 2 top 6 players away from a playoffs spot... which is ridiculous of course. SD, in fairness...it's OK to be pro-Shero and to be happy with what he's done so far (considering the state of the team, I think he's definitely off to a good start, and buying out Zubrus is definitely another good move here without question), and you've gotten what you wanted on two counts...Shero is now the Devils' GM, and Lou isn't. So why do you have to keep making remarks that basically say "If Lou was still here...", followed by some negative about how things would've continued to get worse no matter what? It's as though Lou's already been kicked out the door, but somehow that isn't enough, and you're still hanging out near the threshold hoping to get a couple more boots to Lou's ass. He's gone, almost everyone agrees it was the right move at the right time, and there's not much point in speculating how the "If Lou had stayed..." timeline would've played out. We should be a lot more interested in the timeline that actually exists. In some ways, Shero is an easy spot right now, in that this ownership, just like they were with Lou, seem to be very willing to give their GMs considerable freedom to do what they want, which includes the ability to dump a bad contract such as Zubrus'. He's also benefitting from simple fan binary mentality, in that he's Not-Lou. Sometimes cleaning up the mess is the easy part (in that fan expectations are usually at their lowest) and right now that's all we're really asking of Shero...to undo some of the previous regime's mistakes, and to phase out the lingering pieces of some that regime's identity. Dumping Zubrus is another step towards that. We're not asking Shero to make any creative deals that lands the Devils a nice cornerstone or to make this team competitive in the short run. Shero's Devils legacy will be shaped once he does the equivalent of stripping the room down to the bare studs and starts to rebuild the team in his image. I'm as hopeful as anyone that Shero works out, and I do like what I've seen so far, but we won't know what he have with him for quite a while. BostonNala370
Although I'll never lose sleep over someone getting paid $2 million over two years not to go to work, I feel kind of bad as he was one of those players that had a lot of loyalty to the organization and the area, and is the only free agent that I can think of that said he was hoping to end up in NJ. And there was a part of me that felt that he could have enough of a resurgence to be an effective player for a team that's not so great to begin with. But ultimately, it's not really a big deal one way or the other. There's no far superior player that he would have been keeping off the roster, and the Devils aren't going to be appreciably better or worse because of this. That's exactly how I feel about him. He is worn out but loyal to the T.

For sure you're gonna give the few extra boots. Edited July 29, 2015 by SterioDesign

NJDfan1711
Just got that tweet...Elias will be our oldest player? What are the odds Sal is coming back? Sent from my TAB2 using TapaTalk Zubrus is two years younger than Elias, so even if he was going to be on the team next year, Elias would still be the oldest. Zubrus was a decent role player, but the last 2-3 years were just brutal, and it was time to cut the dead weight unfortunately. Nice guy, and I can't believe he played for us more than any other team (I actually don't remember him in the Canadiens or Flyers much in the 90s, really only the Caps...), so I appreciate his loyalty, but...we must move on. Thanks Zubrus, and best of luck if you continue to look elsewhere.

I've said that I thought Shero was a good move, and Lou leaving under the current circumstances was even better, for all involved. It was time. The one thing that I will give you is that if Lou had stayed, I think him taking the proverbial wrecking ball (or anything truly resembling one) to this team wouldn't have come naturally to him, but in fairness to him, Lou was used to re-tooling and being able to stay competitive for many years. Doesn't mean he was always right. I am explaining that Shero is in a different situation that Lou was. Lou was getting to the point where it was going to be lose-lose no matter what (and I can understand why...Lou was part of the problem there), and with Shero right now it's win-win, because all he's really being tasked with is to be the mouthwash that kills the halitosis of the past season and the missteps that led up to it. There's not much wrong he can do right now, as long as he's dismantling and giving us all hope for the future. To Shero's credit, he's been proactive in all the right ways...I have no quibbles with anything he's done. So you blew that out of proportion a bit.

So you blew that out of proportion a bit. From Rich Chere: http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2015/07/devils_put_dainius_zubrus_on_waivers_to_buy_out_co.html#incart_story_package "There's a second buyout window here," Devils GM Ray Shero told NJ Advance Media. "Over the last 4-5 days I've been talking to other general managers about some players who might be available or free agents that are still out there. "It's not a cap situation. That's not it at all. It was more roster flexibility. Is anything going on? I'm not saying anything is imminent. It just gives us flexibility moving forward." A 48-hour buyout window began Tuesday after the Devils avoided salary arbitration with Adam Larsson by signing the defenseman to a six-year, $25 million contract Saturday. "It's always hard. He's been here a number of years and he's been a good contributor," Shero said. "He's a big boy. We had a good conversation and said he understands. It's not the easiest part of the business but these are decisions you sometimes have to make. "I think it was just everything overall. It's well-documented that last year wasn't the best year of his career, but his body of work has been good. It's more about (other) guys having an opportunity to play or whether it's eventually signing (Pavel) Zacha and giving him an opportunity. I'm not saying he will or won't (sign)." Sounds pretty much like "anything can happen" with no real timetable. Almost a fancier way of stating the ol' GM standby "If there's a move out there that will improve our team, we're always interested." Sounds like he's going to be pretty proactive and thorough though.

Colorado Rockies 1976
Great move, really looking forward to this season starting. New young coach that isn't a retread No Ryder No Havlat No Gomez (nothing against him, he did more than ever could've been expected, but I thought it would've been a mistake to expect anything approaching a repeat of that) No Salvador No Bernier No Harrold No Sestito No Zubrus I'm with you. Like that there's going to be new blood, that the young D will be getting continued on-the-job training, and that the Devils will start to find out what guys like Boucher and Matteau might bring. And that the deadwood pile is getting mulched.
