Triumph
It's July 30th, and Dainius Zubrus's buyout was just completed. That makes him the 14th 2014-15 Devil to be a UFA or have pending UFA status this the off-season, let's see how they are doing. Well, Jaromir Jagr signed with the Panthers, Peter Harrold got a 2 way contract from the Blues, Joe Whitney a 2 way deal from the Islanders, and Scott Clemmensen retired from playing hockey. The rest of NJ's UFAs are free agents. These are the players who played for the Devils last year and are currently UFAs in the NHL (some of them have signed overseas already): Salvador Zidlicky Gomez Bernier Havlat Ryder Zubrus Sestito Brunner Fraser Regardless, this thread is for discussing these players and posting when one of these guys actually gets a gig somewhere else. We know Sestito and Brunner won't play in the NHL next year, but I'll bet Fraser, Havlat, and Ryder don't either. Zidlicky and Bernier are the only locks to play again IMO. It's astounding how (so far) the NHL is rejecting the guys who played for this team. Edited July 30, 2015 by Triumph
Zubie#8
I'm sure Gomez will eventually be picked up. He had a very strong season. I can see Havlat and Ryder getting tryouts. As for Zubrus I hope he finds a tryout somewhere and impresses but he will probably go overseas I think.
Jerzey
Apparently Boston is in talks with Zidlicky. I think a good portion of those guys will end up signing mid season, much like Gomez last year, after injuries start coming. That is if they get a job at all. Devilsfan118
Is Ryder 100% done? I mean, I think the past two years with the Devils probably killed any chance of getting a significant contract with another team. But do you guys and gals think he'll get a tryout somewhere or something? I think he could probably still net 20 goals if he had a capable center. Triumph
I could see Ryder getting a tryout but I don't think it looks good that NJ basically sat him for the 2nd half of the season. Haha, I think my favorite Michael Ryder as a Devil moment is when he had been sitting for nearly a month, came back in this game, and took an utterly idiotic roughing penalty - NJ was playing a pretty good game at that point somehow (when you consider that Jordin Tootoo had more ice time than Jagr) but Chicago scored on the PP Ryder gave them and ended up winning. So yeah, Ryder getting a tryout, sure. Ryder necessarily being signed off that tryout? I don't know.
devilsrule33
Not including 04-05 lockout, when was the last time a team had 6 regulars not in the NHL following season...and their absence was not their doing? That's what possibly could happen next season with Havlat, Ryder, Fraser, Zubrus, Salvador, and maybe one of Gomez/Bernier (unlikely though). Anyone had a chance at Brunner last year, and I doubt there was much interest last year. If Tootoo wasn't signed, would he still be a UFA too? The 14-15 Devils everyone. Still amazing that they never had a realistic shot at McDavid/Eichel/Marner/Strome.
Neb00rs
I'm very surprised Bernier hasn't signed somewhere; he had a career year last year. Havlat is done. No one is signing him after his showing this past year. Ryder I doubt gets an NHL job either. They are dead weight in the eyes of the NHL now. mfitz804
I'm very surprised Bernier hasn't signed somewhere; he had a career year last year. Agreed. He exceeded all expectations and someone could probably use him on their 4th line, maybe even 3rd line in a pinch/injury situation. And what would you have to pay him, a million bucks maybe? I know there are plenty of sucker GM's out there, but I bet a lot are looking at him not being able to reproduce even close to last year's numbers unless he gets a good amount of PP time, which I doubt he will be given. I think Bernier will either get a tryout or get signed pretty close to training camp.
Neb00rs
What you're saying makes sense only if Bernier is asking for too much, which is a possibility I've thrown out before on this board. Other than that, it's surprising that no team has given him an 800K-1M offer, though I suppose someone has and he turned it down. Hey may be holding out until September for someone to give him $1.5-2.5 million, we don't know. For all we know, 10 teams could be in a bidding war for him under the $1 million threshold, in $50K increments and he's just waiting it out. Nerve-racking for him, yes, but it could work out for him, who knows... But point is, we don't know anything. dmann422
Yeah Zidlicky and Bernier will definitely get deals before the season starts. Other than that who knows And yes its a very sad list indeed, but its a bit unfair to lump in guys like Brunner (who was waived mid season) Salvador (who is coming off an injury and probably finished) and Sestito (who was never an NHL player to begin with). CarpathianForest
Sucks about Havlat. I always liked him. He was a true first liner with just a lot of bad luck.
Derlique
I'll try to predict where each guy goes: Salvador- retire Zidlicky- Boston Gomez- Carolina Bernier- Toronto Havlat- Europe Ryder- PTO but wont be signed Zubrus- retire Sestito- Europe Brunner- Europe Fraser- AHL
NJDfan1711
How is there little or no interest in Zidlicky? I don't really see how his defensive abilities have declined much, but even if they have, he's still gifted offensively, and he played pretty damn well for Detroit in their first round loss to the eventual Cup runner-ups. Chimaira_Devil_#9
You can cross Sestito off that list. Pretty sure I remember TG tweeting that he has singed for Dynamo Riga in the KHL. Will try and find the tweet.

He took the body, gets Espo kind of goals. Maybe they offered a 2 way/ he wouldn't do it?

I think that the only reason Zidlicky isn't signed is because he is so obsessed with location and situation (ie. place he wanted to go, that needed a PP righty specialist and would feature him more than most). It makes sense; it's what I would probably do too if I were him. When the Wild wanted to move on, he made sure he had a NTC and would ONLY go to the Devils because the situation was great for him. Then when the Devils were done with him, he had a NTC and would ONLY go to the Red Wings. It's just that he has only a couple of teams and they don't want him I bet because he's too old. I'm very surprised Bernier hasn't signed somewhere; he had a career year last year. Bernier is still a good hockey player. I would've loved him, especially in comparison to having Tootoo. I really hope it was that he asked for too much because the RW situation is brutal right now and him anchoring the 4th line and being good enough to jump up to top 9 was highly underrated. I hope everything wraps around and he signs back here for under a million.

If someone said to me hey, I've got a job for you you don't want in Denver, I'd tell them to go fvck themselves. The man's made his money. He can probably live off his savings and whatever he'll make coaching here or back in the Czech republic. He shouldn't subject himself to living LA or Winnipeg.
